He was born on September 15, 1935, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Carl and Florence (Zimmer) Flogel. In Don’s younger years, they lived in the Key West area and later in the yellow house on Cleveland Ave. When Don’s brother Dick was a year old the family moved to Massey Station. He attended St. Columbkille and St. Joseph Key West schools and graduated from Dubuque Senior High School.
Don married Elizabeth A. “Bette” Bautch on September 12, 1960. Together, they built their family home on Arizona Street, where they shared 59 years of memories. Bette passed away on August 16, 2020. Don and Bette enjoyed 60 wonderful years together, cherishing their time as husband and wife.
Don dedicated over 49 years of his life to working in the printing industry. His passion for his work was evident, as he genuinely loved and enjoyed his job.
Don was known as a simple man; if something needed fixing, Don was always the person to turn to—his family and friends often said, “Give it to Don; he can fix it.”
He was a man of many stories. Whether his tales were true or embellished, no one could ever quite tell. His storytelling brought joy and laughter to gatherings, and his adventures became cherished memories.
Don enjoyed a variety of activities. He enjoyed dancing, biking, trapping, fishing, hunting, boating, and ginseng hunting. His creativity was evident in his boat-building projects and the duck decoys he carved. Don was also a fan of NASCAR, loved playing cards, and found fulfillment in harvesting walnuts and anything that allowed him to spend time outdoors, which included tending to his yard which he cut and trimmed till the very end.
Don cherished his family and time with them, those left to carry on his memory:
his two children Tim (Sue) Flogel, of LaMotte and Laura (Richard) Kilburg, of Dubuque, IA. Grandchildren: Jason (Dana), Sarah (Adam), Katherine (Daniel) and Libby (Jared) and 12 great-grandchildren Carter, Hannah, Ella, Adyson, Macey, Lily, Theo. Elle, Nolan, Kaden, Cecilia and Eliza. His sister Mary (Carl) Boeckenstedt; two brothers James (Jane) Flogel and Richard (Gerri) Flogel; sister-in-law Lillian Bautch along with many nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife Bette.
In lieu of flowers a Don Flogel memorial fund will be established.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Stonehill Health Center and Hospice of Dubuque for all their care and compassion they gave to Don.
