Doris June Johnson, 85, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, August 10, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

Doris June Johnson was born on June 10, 1941, in El Segundo, California, to Ralph and Sylvia (Whipple) Daehler. She attended El Segundo high school in California and carried the values of hard work, family, and perseverance throughout her life. Doris lived a life marked by devotion to the people she loved and by the many roles she embraced with grace and strength.

She was married twice, first to Claude Monroe Sr. and then Robert Johnson. Both preceded her in death. She was blessed with six children, Kay, Kenny, Karen, Claude Jr., Teresa, and Lee.

Doris relocated her family from California to Maquoketa, Iowa in 1978. She worked for many years at HOOF Products/Dynagear in Maquoketa as a machine operator, where she was known for her steady work ethic and dependable nature. She also spent time as a bartender at Hov’s Pub. Before retiring, Doris worked at the Senior Center and Clover Ridge in Maquoketa. She took pride in her work and in the relationships she formed along the way.

In earlier years, she was an avid bowler and pool player and enjoyed participating in local leagues. More recently in her free time, Doris loved camping and relaxing by the river. She could often be found in the kitchen preparing her signature meals for family. She loved playing cards and putting together puzzles. Doris appreciated good company, friendly competition, and the simple pleasures of life.

For the past several years, her granddaughter Sierrah Shady (with help from her husband Steven) held a special role as her primary caregiver. Doris deeply valued the unwavering love, devotion and companionship from them which brought her comfort especially during her final journey.

Doris is survived by her children, Kay Halweg of IN, Kenny Monroe of AZ, Karen (Danny) Greer of IN, Claude Monroe Jr. of Maquoketa, IA, Teresa (Shannon) Mussman of Dubuque, IA, and Lee (Angie) Johnson of Asbury, IA; siblings, Jim Daehler of Maquoketa, IA and Don (Patsi) Daehler of Asbury, IA; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren around the country. She also leaves behind her beloved four-legged companion Angel.  Doris was preceded in death by her parents, husband Claude Monroe Sr., and a sister Gloria.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Doris’ special neighbor/friend Sue Baker, the ER team at JCRHC (notably Dr. River), and also the UIHC team members that were involved in her care (especially Dr. Morgan from the Surgery Team and Jenna, RN from the Palliative Care Floor).

A public graveside service and burial celebrating her life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, August 17, 2026, at Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa.  There is no public visitation.  The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family.
