Patricia Ames, affectionately known to many as Pat, 93, of East Dubuque, IL, peacefully passed into the arms of our Lord at home on Monday, August 10, 2026.

Pat was born on June 25, 1933, in the close-knit community of Gary Owen, Iowa. She was welcomed into the world by her loving parents, Louis and Bendina (Rubel) Manders, who instilled in her the values of faith, family, and hard work which were evident in over 70 years of loving care for their daughter, Lynn.

Pat grew up working at the family store in St. Donatus and graduated from St. Columbkille’s in Dubuque laying the foundation for a life rich in her unwavering faith and deep love for her family. On June 26, 1954, Pat married the love of her life, Francis (Fritz) Ames, beginning a beautiful life together that spanned over 72 years. Together, they built a family filled with love, laughter, and shared experiences.

She was later employed for many years by JCPenney in Dubuque, where her warm smile and commitment to service left a lasting impression on colleagues and customers alike. Pat also served for 35 years as the bookkeeper for Fritz’s band, The Country Kings, a role that perfectly aligned with her love for Fritz and passion for music and dancing.

Pat and Fritz have been blessed with five wonderful children: Lynn Ames of East Dubuque, John (Geralyn) Ames of Colleyville, TX, Sue Hartung of Preston, IA, Laura (Kurt) Mechelke of Kirkwood, MO, and Gary (Kathy) Ames of Fayetteville, GA.

Pat’s legacy extends through her 12 cherished grandchildren: Eric (Diana) Ames, Chelsea (Bryan) Hoeller, Neil (Chris) Gamel-Ames, Lisa Hornung, Robbie (Vanessa) Hornung, Michael Hartung, Sara Hartung, Morgan (Mitch) Cochran, Cole Mechelke, Callie Mechelke, and Nick Ames. She also rejoices in the love of her 11 great-grandchildren, each a testament to the enduring bonds of family she so valued.

Pat is survived by her siblings, Mary (David) Jacobsmeyer and Charlotte (Tom) Pfeiffer. Pat is predeceased by her sister, Lois (Jude) Sweeney, and brother, Louis (Pat) Manders Jr. (affectionately known as Butch), as well as her grandson, Brian Hornung, and son-in-law, Jerry Hartung, whose memories she holds dear.

As a devoted Catholic and member of St. Mary’s Church, Pat was an active participant in the Altar and Rosary Society, and volunteered for many years at the St. Mary’s School Hot Lunch Program. She also loved gardening, reading and putting together puzzles. Her love for music and dance was a defining aspect of her life, and she was known as the number one fan of The Country Kings.

A visitation in honor of Patricia Ames will be held from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 17, 2026, at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, and from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Pat’s kindness and spirit are invited to gather in celebration of her remarkable life. The parish rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at St. Mary’s Church in East Dubuque, with Fr. Xavier Santiago officiating. Burial will follow in East Dubuque Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations in her memory to St. Mary’s Church.  Special thanks to all who assisted in caring for her over these last few months.
