Harold L. Weets
Harold Lynn Weets, 91, of Lost Nation, Iowa, passed away on Saturday evening, June 27, 2026, at home.
Harold was born on May 10, 1935, in Maquoketa, to Alvina Irene (Luett) and William Martin Weets II. He grew up with strong family values and a dedication to hard work, faith, and community. He was a 1953 graduate of Lost Nation High School and later served as a corporal in the Army National Guard, receiving an honorable discharge. On March 13, 1955, he married Dolores Jean Roden at the Union Presbyterian Church in Lost Nation. Four children were born to this union—Michele, Mark, Michael, and Melissa—and Harold took great pride in being a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Harold was a lifelong farmer, and he spent his life working the family farms southeast of Lost Nation. Farming was not simply his occupation, but a way of life that reflected his steady character, perseverance, and respect for the land. He found purpose in the daily rhythm of farm life and took great satisfaction in the work that helped sustain his family and community.
Harold was a member of the Union Presbyterian Church in Lost Nation, where he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Board of Trustees. He gave his time and talents faithfully, supporting the church and the people around him in meaningful ways. He was also a member of the Harbor Masonic Lodge AF & AM and served in several offices over the course of 12 years with the Lost Nation Consumers Co-op Association. In addition, he volunteered many hours to the Lost Nation Cemetery Recovery, Rescue, and Restoration Committee, a group dedicated to repairing damaged and fallen stones and markers.
Harold enjoyed a full and active life beyond his work and service. He loved traveling and had the opportunity to visit destinations all across the United States and internationally. He especially enjoyed fishing, boating, water skiing, and camping with family and friends. He enjoyed many a gathering with the Grant Township “Marauders”, and he also took great enjoyment in running the combine and driving his John Deere lawn mower.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Dolores Weets of Lost Nation, Iowa; his children, Michele (Bruce) Sorrell of Iowa City, Mark (Linda) Weets of Lost Nation, Michael (Bonnie) Weets of Lost Nation, and Melissa (Matt) Anderson of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his siblings Lenora Weets, Virginia (Vic) Hein, William Weets III, Alan (Mary) Weets, and Darrell Weets.
A celebration of Harold’s life will take place on Thursday, July 23 from 4-6 p.m. at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. A private family burial at the Lost Nation Cemetery will be held at a later date.
