Iona Koppes
Iona Koppes, 89, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on May 2, 2026, at home surrounded by her family.
Friends and family may visit from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Dubuque Memorial Gardens. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is assisting the family.
Iona was born on June 13, 1936, in Springbrook, Iowa, the daughter of Arnold and Clara (Weis) Steines. She completed the 8th grade in Springbrook and graduated high school in 1965, by going through night school. She finished beauty school in 1955. On May 18, 1957, Iona married Harold D. Koppes at St. Peter and Paul Church in Springbrook, Iowa.
She worked as a Beautician at Stampfers from 1956-1975, then went on to Ione’s Beauty Salon from 1975-1998 and finished her beauty career working at Bethany Home from 1998-2017.
Iona is survived by her daughter, Kimberly (Eric Chew) Koppes; grandchildren, Shawn (Stacy) Stackis and Kelly Stackis; great-grandchildren, Brianna, Aleece (Codie), Kaylee (Dalton), Ashleigh, McKenna, Rylie and Brynlee; great-great-grandchildren, Catalina and Rowan; siblings, Roger (Jan) Steines, Sr. Shirley Steines, Marlene Steines, Darlene Sieverding, Kelma (Bob) Michels, Bonnie Charboneau, Mary Jo (Dale) Zeimet, and Patti Steines; sister-in-law, Joyce (Larry) Michels; along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her parents, Arnold and Clara; her parents in law, Don and Jennie Weyhgant; siblings and in-laws, Gwendola (Merlin) Till, Merrice (Phyllis) Steines, Betty (Richard) Fleege, Madonna (Joseph) McCloy, Larry Steines, Tom Sieverding, Ray Charboneau, Gary Beohm, Lois Guenther, Ron Koppes; nieces, Connie and Tina; nephews, Bobby and Shawn; great-granddaughter, Maggie.
In lieu of flowers an Iona Koppes memorial fund has been established.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Tom Schreiber and Laurie at Grand River Medical; Kelly, Nicole and Jill for the Palliative Care in the last couple of weeks. Thank you to Ellen Smothers for caring for mom the last year and making her feel comfortable and special. Also, to Peg Weber for being such a special neighbor and friend to our family – for bringing communion and small talk to Iona.
