Richard M. Ennis
Richard M. Ennis, age 60, of Epworth, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Finley Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa, on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2026 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd.
Richard shared 21 years together with Michele LeGrand, including 18 years of marriage. Although their marriage later ended, they remained close and good friends until his last breath.
Richard was a hardworking man who spent over 20 years as a foreman for Jim Giese Roofing. For the past 10-plus years, he also owned and operated his own handyman business. There truly wasn’t much Richard couldn’t fix. He was the kind of man who could figure out just about anything, and if something was broken, he would find a way to make it right.
Outside of work, Richard enjoyed NASCAR, especially his favorite driver, Jeff Gordon, and watching western movies. He was known for being a tough guy on the outside, but those who knew him best knew he was a softy on the inside. Beneath that tough exterior was a man with a big heart, a love for his family, and a way of showing he cared through the things he did for others.
Some of the most treasured memories were the everyday moments spent together, the lessons he passed down, and the time he shared with those he loved. Whether it was teaching someone how to fish, lending a helping hand, or simply spending time with family, Richard leaves behind countless memories that will be cherished forever.
Those left to cherish his memory include his four children, Cami (Jared) Coyle of Epworth, Leah Kennedy of Dubuque, Mark Coates of Bernard, and Alexis Ennis of Maquoketa; his former spouse and dear friend, Michele LeGrand; his mother, Janice Clever of Freeport; his brother, Rick (Victoria) Ennis of Dubuque; his sister, Bridget Ennis of Freeport; his ten beloved grandchildren, Thomas, Charlee, Grayson, Bella, Chase, Brayden, Lakelynn, Cohen, Linnea, and Eva; his special friend, Lina; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eva Ennis; his infant brother, Steven; his father, William “Bill” Ennis; his maternal and paternal grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Finley Hospital, especially Nurse Greg, who went above and beyond in caring for Richard and supporting his family during such a difficult time. A special thank you also goes to the Epworth paramedics for their care and compassion.
Richard may have been a tough guy who could fix just about anything, but the one thing he couldn’t fix was the heartbreak of having to say goodbye. His hands may no longer be able to lend a helping hand, but the lessons he taught, the memories he made, and the love he gave will live on through his family forever.
He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
