Susan E. Drury, age 84, of Lost Nation, Iowa, passed away on September 22, 2026, in Lost Nation. She was born on March 25, 1942, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Perry and Evelyn Ruth (Carver) Drury.

Susan grew up on a farm near Green Mountain, Iowa, where she attended Green Mountain Community School and graduated in 1960. She then went from the farm to the dorms and attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she earned a degree in secondary education. Her education laid the foundation for a lifelong career devoted to students, learning, and service to others.

Susan began her teaching career in Stockton, Illinois, in 1964, where she taught history for one semester. Later that same year, she came to Lost Nation, where she would make her home and leave a lasting mark on generations of students.   At Lost Nation, she taught high school math.  After the schools merged, she taught middle school math and computers. Over the years, she guided many students through math competitions and encouraged them to do their best with patience, high standards, and steady support.

Her dedication to education was recognized in 2003 when she received the Governor’s Volunteer Award from the Iowa Department of Education. She was also a member and secretary for Clinton County Retired School Personnel, ISEA and NEA, reflecting her commitment to her profession and to the broader community of educators. Susan approached her work with a spirit of responsibility and care, and she was respected for the difference she made in the lives of her students and colleagues.

Faith was an important part of Susan’s life. She was an active member of Union Presbyterian Church in Lost Nation, where she taught High School Sunday School for many years. Her faith-filled nature was evident in the way she lived, serving others with kindness, consistency, and quiet devotion. She was known as a dependable and thoughtful presence in her church and community.

Susan enjoyed high school sports and spent many miles traveling to nieces, nephews, and cousins’ sporting and music events. She was a loyal fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and followed them with enthusiasm. At home, she found joy in her vegetable garden and took pride in the fruits of her labor. She was especially well known for her bread and butter pickles and strawberry jam, which reflected both her skill and her generosity.

She was a faithful volunteer at the Lost Nation Lions Club, the Lost Nation Library, and The Scoop, and she was a reliable donor for the blood bank. Her willingness to give her time and energy to others was one of the many ways she lived out her values. Susan cherished her family deeply and delighted in making annual sequin calendars in animal themes, a creative tradition that brought joy and laughter to those she loved.

Those left to honor her memory include her sister Jeanne Crow of Goose Lake, IA; brother David (Margaret) Drury of Urbandale, IA; niece Faith Spencer; nephews Mark (Diane) Drury, Todd (Lauren) Drury, Ken (Julie) Crow, Ted Crow, John (Heidi) Crow; a special cousin Newell (Jean) Drury; and numerous great nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law Stephen Crow.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 A.M., Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at Union Presbyterian Church in Lost Nation.  Visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 9:30 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the church.  Burial will be at the Lost Nation Cemetery, Lost Nation, IA.  The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to Union Presbyterian Church in Susan’s name.
