Tanya D. Lafrenz

Tanya D. Lafrenz, age 48, of Maquoketa, completed her earthly journey on July 25, 2023, at Dubuque Specialty Care.  To honor Tanya’s life, a private family service will be held at a later date.

Tanya was born on May 22, 1975, in Tennessee, a daughter to Thomas A. and Brenda J. (McDaniel) Winslow.  She was gifted with a strong-will and unwavering determination to push through each and every battle life would bring along the way, and this trait was even more evident over the last couple of years as she faced her cancer head on the entire time.  Tanya was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who truly thrived on the time she was able to spend surrounded by her family.  Her heart was always turned towards love as her mind focused on reality; and the culmination consistently led her to the place where family was the most important gift in this life.  She enjoyed her time working with her friends at Dollar Tree, but Tanya was also content to spend  time in the yard making sure everything was organized and in proper order.  You could often find her taking her favorite little canine companion (Peanut) on walks, as well as escaping away for a weekend with her husband Jim whenever possible.  Tanya lived a full life and even through the trials, she always set a good example as to how to react to any situation as it arose.  We will miss Tanya more than words could accurately depict and are forever grateful for the memories we will truly treasure moving forward without her walking in our midst.  Thank you, Tanya, for simply being you and may your legacy live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved you until we meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Tanya include,

her loving husband,
Jim D. Lafrenz, Maquoketa, IA;

her father,
Thomas (Tom) A. Winslow, Maxwell, CA;

her daughter,
Felicia Lynn (Winslow) Tracy, Maquoketa, IA;

her siblings,

along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Madonna M. Hefel

Madonna (Donna) Marie (Murphy) Hefel passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, with Sleepless in Seattle playing softly in the background, at her home in Reinbeck, IA on Wednesday July 26. After her cancer diagnosis only weeks earlier, she announced to her family and doctors with characteristic humor and determination, that she was on a strict 30 day schedule and then would pass. She moved into the active dying stage on day 31. This was her final accomplishment in a life defined by making powerful decisions, even when the odds were against her.

Donna was born on February 19, 1943 in Dubuque, IA to Lawrence Jay and Eileen Murphy. She was the third of 10 children. Her schooling years were spent in catholic school and she was among the 2nd graduating class of Wahlert High School. She studied to become an X-Ray technician at Finley. Donna married her high school sweetheart, Richard (Dick) Hefel on June 12, 1965 at St. Joseph’s church in Dubuque.

Donna was a hard worker all of her life. She was an exception to the saying “jack of all trades, master of none” by mastering the many trades she tried. Many locals know and remember Donna as an x-ray technician who worked in various hospitals, doctors’ offices, and eventually the in-house clinic at F.D.L. (formerly the Dubuque Packing Co.) Shortly before her death, she referred to spending time laughing with friends at F.D.L as the happiest time in her life. She also sold insurance for Prudential, where she often topped the board in volume of sales. This will come as no surprise to anyone who knew her: Donna had the fabled Irish “gift-of-the-gab.” She attributed her success there to one principle: “I didn’t try to sell people what they didn’t need.” In the final years of her working life, she became  a lunch lady in first, Cascade and then, Bellevue. Donna adored and had a special relationship with any child that crossed her path. While in her own home she administered sweet treats to anyone that would take them, as a lunch lady, she created the menus that met all the governmental criteria for a healthy lunch, ordering ingredients and supplies, scheduling staff and balancing the budget. Her favorite part though always was serving the kids.

Donna didn’t only love kids, she also adored animals. As she and her husband were preparing to retire from formal work, they renovated a farmhouse near Maquoketa. Donna became a hobby farmer – devoting her life to goats, sheep, cats, dogs and briefly an ornery donkey. Once the renovation was complete, Donna established the farm as a bed and breakfast — less for the money it brought in – than for her love of conversation with new people and her pleasure of introducing her farm animals to all the children that came to stay.

Donna left her family with a commitment to hard work, finding endless humor in adversity, as well as the confidence that if you don’t like the way the world is working — have the guts to make changes. Just one example of Donna having the courage of her convictions was in the late 1970s when she took her employer to court for sex discrimination while pregnant with her 4th child. This wasn’t an easy choice but as the mother of daughters, Donna felt compelled to lead by example. Why should her male colleague get to take disability leave for a softball injury but she couldn’t for her pregnancy?

Donna had a deep and abiding catholic faith that guided her through the years. She combined this faith with her strong personal convictions of fairness and equality in raising her children, often reminding them not to pass judgement before walking a mile in another person’s shoes.

In the final week of her illness, Donna was still making jokes and even pulling pranks as her children cared for her. During this time many people all independently used to same phrase to describe Donna: “special lady” – truer words were never spoken. She will be deeply missed.

Donna is survived by her five children: Rick (Vicki) Hefel, Christina (Andrew Meyer) Hefel, Kathleen (Bash) Doran, Elizabeth (Gavin Gould) Hefel, Andrea (Donovan) Devore. Her nine grandchildren: Rachel (Andrew) Kintzinger, Ben Hefel, Nick Hefel, Megan Hefel, Hugo Doran, Jim Devore, Ryker Devore, Guy Doran, and Sophie Devore. Her siblings: Margaret (Jeff) Sweetland, Dolores (Jerry) Dilger, Lawrence (Linda) Murphy, David (Becky) Murphy, Robert (Theresa) Murphy, Patrick (Teri) Murphy, Joseph (Edie) Murphy, and her brother in-law, John Noel. And her 26 nieces and nephews. Donna was predeceased by her husband, Richard Hefel, her parents, L.J. and Eileen Murphy, and her sisters, Mary and Constance.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Tuesday, August 1 at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road where there will be a parish wake service at 7:30 pm.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m Wednesday, August 2, at Holy Spirit Parish-Holy Ghost Church. In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Sisters of Mount St. Francis in Dubuque.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Cedar Valley Hospice for their care of Donna.

SarahSue Nelson

SarahSue “Sue” Nelson, age 82, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on July 25, 2023, at home while surrounded by her loving family.

Sue was born on April 4, 1941, in Dubuque, IA, a daughter to Arthur and Loretta (Schmitt) Gross.  Sue possessed a sweet and gentle spirit and continually made friends wherever life’s journey took her.  She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Kenneth Nelson, and the couple was blessed with 44 years of marriage before he was sadly called home ahead of her in the June of 2004.  Sue spent her working years as a hairdresser for over 53 years and worked faithfully in Iowa, Wisconsin and Florida before finally moving into retirement.  In her free-time, Sue enjoyed volunteering with the girl scouts and PTA, and later in life was quite often found joyfully working in her flower gardens, settling in with a good book, and working on her latest needle work creation.  She was also always excited to be invited to the school sporting events for her loved ones and was the best cheerleader any of them could hope to have in the stands.  The world is surely a lesser place today without Sue’s love and light shining vividly within the lives of those around her, and especially with those she loved and adored.  The abundance of beautiful memories all who knew her will hopefully help to ease the pain of her sudden absence from our lives and we are forever grateful for the 82 years the Lord was gracious enough to share her with us.  Thank you, Sue, for being a constant light in the darkness and for always loving without abandon all who came across you path.  May you find peace now from your earthly battles and comfort in the loving hand of your Lord and Savior until we see you again.

Those left behind to treasure the memory of Sue include,

Jerry was born on January 13, 1936, in Sac City, IA, a son to Arvid L. and Dorothy E. (Williams) Anderson.  Jerry was blessed with a kind and patient spirit and proudly proceeded to develop those gifts throughout his entire 87 years among us.  The family moved to Independence, IA when Jerry was 5.  He was married to his first wife, L. Sue Morris, on June 3, 1956, in Madras, OR.  They were blessed with three children before they later divorced.  Jerry thankfully found love again and was united in marriage to his soul-mate, Janet “Jan” Schickel, on April 18, 1978, in Dubuque, IA.  He admirably accepted her two sons and they have been blessed with 45 wonderful years together.  Jerry was an architectural engineer by trade for over 66 years and owned Anderson Design and Consulting.  He had a strong work ethic and spent each day bringing his time and talents to the table without hesitation.  In his free-time, Jerry enjoyed flying his planes with the Dubuque Flying Club, spending time with his friends at the Rotary Club, donating blood and volunteering with Impact Life, as well as a round of golf whenever possible, sitting in his favorite pew at church, and if time allowed, grabbing his lucky fishing pole and testing the waters for the big catch of the day.  Jerry lived a full and abundant life and always knew that his greatest joy was to be found within the presence of his family and loved ones.  We will miss Jerry’s quick wit and loving demeanor being all so absent from our days ahead, but we also find peace within the abundance of memories he leaves behind as well.  Thank you, Jerry, for being the husband, father, grandfather, and friend we all needed you to be and we pray that the Lord will keep you safe in His loving and grace-filled arms until we all meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Jerry include,

A life-long resident of Dubuque, he graduated from St. Anthony’s Elementary School; Wahlert Catholic High School, 1964; and Loras College, 1968.

He was employed as a Direct Support Professional at Area Residential Care (ARC) for over 50 years, starting on Sept. 1, 1971, soon after the agency opened.

“I am happy that I was able to make my living doing something that was worthwhile per my own value system,” “Mr. ARC” once commented.

“I joined as a volunteer while I was at Loras College,” he added. “I gained experience as a member of the Buddy Club, which then turned into my career. I felt at ease during my time volunteering and enjoyed the interaction, so I accepted the job after graduation and the rest is history.”

“Mr. ARC” was looked upon as a father figure by many of the individuals he served over the decades as well as a “celebrity” of sorts within the agency.

When not working, he could be found at the casino or the Asbury HyVee deli. He was an avid boxing fan.

He also had a strong interest in the field of psychology, annually attending workshops in Georgia. He was an associate of Carl Rogers, the widely-known American psychologist, researcher, and author.

Rogers is credited with originating the nondirective, or client-centered approach to psychology.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Carl on Aug. 17, 1975, and Colette on Aug. 7, 1973.

Surviving are his long-time special friend Della Tracy; Della’s daughter and son-in-law Susannah (Steven) Cunningham and their children and grandchildren; and Della’s son and daughter-in-law Michael (Kathy) Tracy.

Dave is also survived by cousins and the loving clients, staff, and caregivers at ARC.

Props to those who provided Dave with services and kindnesses near the end, including loyal friends Eugene Berens, John and Joan Fangman, Jamie and Julie Brown, Mike Hickey, Bill Cullen, and Karl Behning, among others. Plus, the wonderful staff at Ahva Living of East Dubuque (formerly Bell Tower Retirement Community).

As well as these friends who enjoyed life with Dave over the decades: the late Roger Conry, Joseph “Buzzy” Sprengelmeyer, John Davis and Marien Hickey-Davis, Rob and Mary McNally, Rick and Martha Stuter, Karl Stieglitz, Kim Steines, Andy Raeside, Tom Jack, Jim Potter, and Bill and Linda Phillips, among others.

The family will thankfully receive your support through greeting cards and memorials in Dave’s memory which may be mailed to Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, Dubuque, Iowa 52001, Attn. Dave Spahn Family.
