Roxann M. Woolf

Roxann Marie Woolf, 67, of Dubuque, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at Bethany Home Retirement Center.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm Monday, July 17, 2023 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Funeral Service for Roxann will be 10:00 am Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory with Chad Woolf officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque.

Roxann was born June 14, 1956, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Carl Henry and Margie June Nauholz. She was a graduate of West Central Community High School in Maynard, IA, and later became a Registered Nurse. On June 18, 1977, she married Gary David Woolf at the American Lutheran Church in Jesup, Iowa.

Roxann worked as a Registered Nurse at Mercy Medical Center and Medical Associates.

She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, watching movies, and listening to music (with a special love for Kenny Rogers and Engelbert Humperdinck).

Survivors include her son, Jeremy (Wendy) Woolf of Dubuque; one daughter, Krista (Morgan) Carpenter of Minneapolis, MN; four grandchildren, Cooper and Caplan Woolf, and Lachlan and Callum Carpenter; one brother, Mark (Lori) Nauholz of Cedar Rapids, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Gary, on December 19, 2021.

Her family would like to thank the wonderful and caring staff of Bethany Home Retirement Center and Hospice of Dubuque.

A memorial has been established.

Martin R. Erner

Martin R. (Ron) Erner, 72, of Hanover, IL., formerly of Menominee, IL., passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at Ennoble Nursing and Rehab in Dubuque, IA.

Family and friends may call from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, where the Parish Prayer Service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.  There will also be a visitation from 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. on Monday at the Church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 17^th at Nativity BVM Church at Menominee, with Fr. Dennis Vargas officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military honors accorded by members of American Legion Post # 787 of East Dubuque.

Ron was born on November 20, 1950, at Hazel Green, WI., the son of Melvin W. and Mary Jean (Martin) Erner. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving with the U. S. Army.

He was formerly employed by Holland Plumbing and Heating of Galena, IL., until his retirement.  Ron was a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local # 23 of Rockford, IL, and a member of Van Bibber-Hansen American Legion Post # 148 of Savanna, IL.

Ron loved hunting, fishing, traveling out west to the mountains, ATVing and time spent with his sons and grandchildren.  A great honor for Ron was when he went on the Veteran’s Honor Flight to Washington, D. C. in 2022.

Surviving are two sons, Bill (Abbie) Erner of Asbury, IA., and Chad (Katie) Erner of Hazel Green, WI.; three grandchildren, Joshua, Nathan and Cheyenne Erner; the mother of his children, Sue Schlarman; his siblings, Madonna (Tim) Heller of East Dubuque, Dan Erner (Kathy Hill) of Lena, Melanie (Rod) Wichman of Baileyville, and Michelle (Doug) Wybourn of Lena; two nieces, three nephews; one great-niece, two great-nephews; as well as several close friends.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Mary Jean Erner.

The family would like to give special thanks to the Doctors and Nurses at the V. A. Clinic in Freeport, IL, and to the nurses and staff at Ennoble Manor Nursing and Rehab in Dubuque, IA for the wonderful care provided for their father.

Orben J. Busch

Orben J. Busch, 100, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away on Saturday evening, July 8, 2023, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa.

Orben John Busch was born on August 25, 1922 in Jackson County, Iowa to John C.A. and Caroline (Kokemuller) Busch.  He grew up in the Nashville area on the family farm.  He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, earning an honorable discharge with a Good Conduct medal.

Upon returning home, he farmed in Jackson County and worked at Alcoa and retired from Farmall after many years.  He also delivered the Quad City Times newspaper for many years until the age of 90.  In retirement, he drove for Kimberly Chrysler and picked up cars all over Iowa and Illinois for maintenance service.  He also served as a caretaker of the Busch Cemetery for many years.

He married Dorothy Louise Barger on July 5, 1967 in Rock Island, Illinois.  She preceded him in death on October 23, 2022.

Orben was member of the American Legion Post #729.  He enjoyed family reunions, tinkering with cars and trucks, watching golf, country music, and doing donuts in the parking lot in the snow.

He was well loved by neighbors, friends, and family, and was a kind and gentle man with a beautiful smile.

Those left to honor his memory include his children, Marlus (Bud) Pokorny of Davenport, IA, Laurie (Fred) Williams of Amboy, IL, Joe (Paula) Wesenberg of Reynolds, IL, Liz (John) Severns of Hereford, AZ, Dean (Donna) Dick of Davenport, IA, James (Sheila) Kent of Moline, IL, Kevin (Debbie) Busch of Lake Elsinore, CA, and Kit (Rebecca) Busch of Houston, TX; a daughter-in-law, Robbin (Kim’s wife) Busch of Indianapolis, IN; many grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy, a son Kim Busch, siblings Leona Westphal, Virtes Busch, Emmett Busch, Darlene Small, and Irene Wyatt, and a great-grandson Colin Breining.

A celebration of his life will be held at 12 P.M., Monday, July 17, 2023, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial with military honors will be at 2:30 P.M., Monday, at Busch Cemetery, rural Lost Nation, Iowa.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, an Orben J. Busch memorial fund has been established.

Steve L. Heister

Steve L. Heister, 62, of Andrew, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 10, 2023, at home.

Steve L. Heister was born on May 4, 1961 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Morgan and Madonna (Manning) Heister. He was raised by his mother and stepdad Jim Clark. He was a graduate of Maquoketa High School and married Michelle Marie Feller in 1983 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa.  Two children were born to this union, Katie, and Michael.  Michelle and Steve later divorced but remained friends.

Steve was a self-employed mechanic and owned and operated Steve’s Body Shop in Maquoketa for over 40 years.  He enjoyed building and fixing old cars, socializing with friends and family, and especially spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Steve is survived by his children, Katie (Jason) Dondlinger of Bellevue, IA, and Michael (Ryanne) Heister of Andrew, IA; 5 grandchildren, Jaden, Hailey, Chase, Jaymes, and Chloie; his father, Morgan Heister of Lisbon, IA; and brothers, David Heister of TX, Mike Heister of Zwingle, IA, Doug Clark of TX, and Marty Clark of Maquoketa, IA.  He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather.

A gathering of family and friends celebrating Steve’s life will be held on Friday, July 14, 2023, from 3 to 5 P.M. at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Cremation rites have been accorded.  A private burial will be held at a later date at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Springbrook, Iowa.

Irene A. Herrig

Irene A. Herrig, 96, of Dubuque, IA passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at Sunset Park Place surrounded by her family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 14, 2023, at St. Donatus Catholic Church with Father Bob Gross officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the church. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd. Dubuque is assisting the family.

Irene was born on April 29, 1927 in Dubuque, IA the daughter of Lawrence and Anne (Murray) Grant. She graduated from St. Columbkille High School in Dubuque. On September 9, 1950, she married Julian Herrig and together they shared 60 years of marriage and raised 5 children.

Irene enjoyed crocheting, baking, canning, gardening and playing cards. Most importantly she loved spending time with family and friends. Irene provided for her family day in and day out, serving three meals a day and keeping a perfect home. Although that may have been a challenge at times, she always kept up and did so with grace. The love she had for her family was unmatched and she will be dearly missed.

Irene is survived by her children, Joanne (Ron) Lenstra, of Dubuque, David (Judy) Herrig, of LaMotte, Roger Herrig, of Bernard, Janet Seberian, of Dubuque and Jean (Mark) Blatz of Dubuque; 15 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Julian in 2010; her brothers, Ambrose, Norbert, Loras and Raymond; her sisters, Dorothy Grant and Rita Kopp; and granddaughter, Jennifer Lenstra and great granddaughter Lauren Jean Herrig.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Sunset Park Place and the nurses and staff at Hospice of Dubuque for the wonderful care they provided for Irene.

Vincent E. Decker

Vincent E. Decker, 92, of Zwingle, IA, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, July 10th, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

Friends and family may visit from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 16th, 2023, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be held at 12:45p.m  A mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 17th, 2023, at St. Joseph Church, Key West, with Father Martin Obeng officiating.  Entombment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Key West with full military honors to be accorded by the American Legion Post #6 and the Iowa Army National Guard. Vince was born on February 26, 1931, in Bernard, Iowa, the son of John and Frances (Pfab) Decker.  He attended Feeney School in Key West and Loras Academy Highschool in Dubuque.  He was a lifelong member of St. Theresa Church, LaMotte, and St Joseph’s Church, Key West.

He married Evelyn Hansen on January 18, 1958, at St. Joseph Church in Key West, IA.  Vince was a lifelong farmer who worked on multiple family farms before buying his own farm in 1964 in Zwingle, IA.  Vince also served in the U.S. Army, Company C 14th Armored Cavalary (Half Track Driver), from July 1953 to May 1955, where he was stationed in Germany and worked at the Dubuque Packing Company.

Vince never stopped monitoring the crops and keeping the farm in tip-top shape.  He loved spending time with his family.  He was the sharpest of Euchre players and loved “going alone” even with the lousiest of hands!  He also spent many days with his grandchildren (they called him “Ducky”) playing cards and putting together puzzles!

His heart was always pure, innocent, and charming. He enjoyed the tiny moments in life. The jam/jelly on his bread. Hearing the sound of rain and saying, “Hear that?  The corn is growing!”  The bowl of cornflakes he had every night before bed. His favorite saying to the grandchildren is, “Watch out, be careful the Wookalars are going to get you.”  And whenever you asked him how he feels, he always said, “With my fingers.” All these things made him happy.

He taught us so many things that we will pass on to the generations to come. His journey is an inspiration to our family and others whose lives he touched. Vince will forever rest in our hearts. We love you and miss you. We always will.

Vince is survived by his wife of 65 years, Evelyn; children Jim (Laurie) Decker of Bellevue; Rick (Ann) Decker of Peosta; Randy (Joni) Decker of Dubuque; AJ Decker of Westland, MI; Kevin (Flery) Decker of Hillsboro, OR; Deb (Justin) Wymore of Cedar Rapids, IA; and Roger (Theresa) Decker of Palatine, IL. Grandchildren: Zachary (Megan) Decker, Tiffany (Jesse) Sorensen, Jakob Decker, Brandon Decker, Sydney (Jason) Bush, Dylan Decker, Holly (Sae Hyoung) Oh, Felicia (Nick) Forbus, Skye Decker, Justin Jr. (Kayley/fiance) Wymore, D’Evelyn (Cephas) Kaburu, David Decker, Kaili Decker, and Stephanie Decker.  Great grandchildren Sawyer, Tate, Charley, and Bella.Vince is also survived by his siblings, Hubert (Elizabeth) Decker of Cascade, Monica (Cletus) Thielen of Zwingle, Darlene Collins of Dubuque, John “JJ” (Erma) Decker of Dubuque, Louis (Darla) Decker of Zwingle, Melita (Virgil) Hansen of Maquoketa, Agnes “Fran” Decker, of Dubuque, Bernadine (Mark) Giese, of Dubuque, and Kenneth Decker, of Dubuque; sisters-in-law Veronica Hansen, Rita Hansen, Mary Young, and Pam LaPrell; brothers-in-law William Hansen.

 Vince was preceded in death by his parents, John Francis Decker and Frances (Pfab) Decker; his siblings Margaret Mary Decker, William Theodore Decker, William Nicholas Decker, Albert Joseph Decker, Raymond John Decker, and Harvey Joseph Decker; sisters-in-law Mary Decker, Calista Decker, Phyllis Decker, and Linda Andews; brothers-in-law Jim Collins, Celestine Hansen, Glenn Hansen, Kenneth Michael Hansen, John LaPrell, Dennis Young, and Bernie Andews.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be collected and given to Hospice of Dubuque and the American Heart Association.

Thomas E. Brighton

Thomas E. Brighton, 74, of Monticello, Iowa passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at his home, surrounded by his girls, due to complications of Agent Orange.

Visitation will be held from 3 – 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello.  Visitation will continue at Peace United Church of Christ from 9 – 10 a.m. prior to funeral services.

Funeral services will commence at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 17, 2023 at Peace United Church of Christ with burial to follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Monticello, Iowa.  Pastor Frank Shepherd Jr. will officiate.

Tom was born April 15, 1949 in Monticello, Iowa, the son of Thomas A and Gladys (Tobias) Brighton.  He married Alice J. Takes on September 1, 1973 in Monticello, Iowa.

Tom graduated from Monticello High School in 1967 and was drafted into the US Army in 1969. Tom was a mortar gunner for the 2^nd/34^th Armor and received many awards during his time of service. Upon returning home from service, he returned to work for Energy Manufacturing Inc. in Monticello. He retired in 2005. His many hobbies included, photography, fishing, camping, and woodworking. Tom shared his love of softball through coaching and umpiring. He cherished time with his friends and family, especially attending his grandkid’s events.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 50 years, Alice; children: Ann (fiance, Derek Smith) Brighton of Oelwein, Brenda (Greg) Helmuth, Crystal (Justin) Cole, both of Maynard; grandchildren: Brennan Cole, Caylee Cole, Thomas Helmuth; siblings: Linda Rose of Anamosa, Karen Wadlington of Cedar Rapids, Roger (Pat) Brighton of Monticello; in-laws: L.J. Takes of Monticello, Jean Takes, Joan (Dan) Manternach, Pat Beckman, Mary Kay (Ron) Ackermann, all of Monticello, Carolyn (Jerry) Manternach of Anamosa, Darlene (Steve) Wilcox of Monticello, Sally (Jeff) Sawyers of Marshalltown, Tom (Mary) Takes of Cedar Rapids, Alan (Liz) Takes of Cascade, Carl (Jan) Takes of Anamosa, Charlie “Tuna” Takes of Monticello, Robbie Takes of Anamosa, Bill (Vicki) Takes of Monticello; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, Lloyd and Elda (Otting) Takes; in-laws: Bob Rose, Dave Wadlington, Joe Takes, Marie Takes, and Loretta Beckman.

Edna E. Schiel

Edna Eleanor Schiel, 95, of Dubuque, passed away July 10, 2023 at home.

Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00p.m., Thursday, July 13, 2023 at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road, Dubuque, IA 52002, with a parish wake service at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 14, 2023 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Rev. Steven Rosonke officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Edna was born on June 9, 1928 to Joseph A. and Clara (Udelhoven) Siegert in Dubuque, Iowa.

She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1946 as valedictorian of her class.

Edna was united in marriage to Robert R. Frank on November 13, 1948. He passed away on June 15, 1975. She later married Eldon Schiel on October 6, 1979. He passed away on June 16, 2006.

Edna was employed at West Third Oral Surgery for 27 years, retiring on August 1, 1995.

She was a life-long member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

After retirement Edna volunteered at Finley Hospital, Mercy Hospital, the American Red Cross, and St. Anthony’s Rectory.

Edna is survived by her six children; Dennis (Sheila) Frank of Dubuque, David (Tina) Frank of Trinidad, CO, Dan (Sue) Frank of Dubuque, Debra Crumrine of Dubuque, Diane (Brian) Drozda of Asbury, and Donna (Leo) McMahon of Dubuque; step-children, Virginia (Phil) Reinhard of Rockford, Illinois, Robert Schiel of South Carolina, and Jane (Jim) LaBee of Plainfield, Illinois, grandchildren; Tricia (Junior) Leusmen, Jason Frank, Andy Frank, Marty (Brittni) Frank, Lisa Frank, Lora (Kevin) Halfhill, Travis and Brent Crumrine, Brian Frank, Mike (Maryann) McKernan, Philip (Jenni) McKernan, Daniel (Carmen) McMahon, and Kayla (Travis) Freese; grandchild-in-law, Wendy McKernan; great grandchildren, Ethan, Brighton, Lainey, Grace, Gavin, Darnell, Lydia, Colin, Carter, Cooper, Morgan, Liam, Jordan, Logan, Elliott, Maxwell, Jax, Tucker, and Jade.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, her grandson Robert McKernan, her great granddaughter Emma in infancy, and seven siblings Walter (Clara) Siegert, Earl (Loraine) Siegert, Joseph (Boots) Siegert, Leonard (Ann) Siegert, Marie (Joseph) Kress, Eileen (Vincent) Bahl, and Rita (Charles) Schmitt.

Donald J. Koopmann

Donald J. Koopmann, 82, of Peosta, died Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at the MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center in Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm Sunday, July 16, 2023 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Don will be 10:00 am Monday, July 17, 2023, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Peosta with Father Michael Schueller as the Celebrant.  Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque. Full military honors will be rendered by the Iowa Army National Guard.

Donald was born June 17, 1941, in Dyersville, IA, the son of Alfred L. and Evelyn Kruse Koopmann. He graduated from St. Boniface High School, New Vienna, IA in 1959 and then enlisted in Iowa Army National Guard. Following his time in the National Guard, he began a 35 year career at John Deere Dubuque Works, where he retired from on Nov. 1, 2000. His favorite assignment was driving tractors in the shipping yard.

Don grew up on his family’s farm in New Vienna, so he was used to early morning hours and hard work.  He carried that with him through the rest of his life.  He liked to stay busy around the house with lawn mowing, shoveling and car washing often helping his neighbors and friends.

Don put the same amount of energy into his family and friends.  He had many lifelong friends and constantly made new ones, especially during the winter months they spent in Florida.  He was a lifelong jokester and receiver of many pranks. Don enjoyed water and snow skiing, fishing, playing cards, golfing, and rooting for the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes. He found a love of biking after retirement and enjoyed training rides with friends and several years of RAGBRAI.  Don, to date, took daily 5-mile walks in the neighborhood stopping along the way to visit.

On February 4, 1967, he married Sandra Mary Tilp in Dubuque. Don, Sandy and their daughters spent summers with close family friends on the Mississippi, at Delhi, the Ozarks and traveling the United States and Canada. So, so many special memories were created throughout the years.

Don took an active role as husband, father, and grandfather.  He helped around the house, often cooking supper when both he and Sandy worked since he got home first. After supper they would have a lively discussion about who got to do the dishes rather than who got to sit down and relax. He was a proud and protective father of his daughters all throughout his life.  They knew he would come to the rescue when they needed help or just his shoulder to cry on.  He took care of things.

The grandchildren were the light of his life. He carried them on his shoulders, helped feed, diaper, teach and played with them. Just recently he told his grandson that none of his grandchildren will ever pay for a meal if he is around. Once, while his daughter was ill and son-in-law was away for work, he took care of the three young grandchildren at their house.  He had scheduled phone calls once a week with his youngest granddaughter to this day.

Don lived and loved fiercely without a moment to waste.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy; two daughters, Pam (Terry) Hinman of Iowa City, and Jolene (Rich) Finley of Johnston, IA; six grandchildren,  Lydia, Alexis, and Jack Hinman, Kyla and Austin Finley, and Jessica Greenfield; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Anthony (Eldora) Koopmann and Jim (Doris) Koopmann, both of Dyersville, IA; two sisters, Joyce (Mark) Westhoff of Petersburg, IA, and Mary Heims of Monticello, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother-in-law, Lloyd Heims.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Honor Flight of Dubuque and the Tri-States, Veterans Freedom Center, and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Peosta.

Roger J. Nemmers

Roger J. Nemmers, DDS, 94, died on July 7, 2023,  at Luther Manor.  There will be a brief visitation at St. Joseph the Worker Church at 9am,  Friday, July 14, 2023,  followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10AM, presided by Father Mark Ressler. Military rites will be accorded immediately following the Funeral Mass. The Funeral Mass will be livestreamed and can be viewed at www.egelhofsiegertcasper.com.

Roger was born on Feb, 5, 1929 in La Motte, Iowa, to Nicholas and Rose Beringer Nemmers. He graduated from Loras Academy and Loras College in Dubuque.  He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, being stationed in Japan. Roger married Elizabeth “Liz” Ulrich on June 27, 1956, at the Church of the Nativity, Dubuque. Upon graduating from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1959, Roger and Liz returned to Dubuque.  He practiced dentistry in Dubuque until he retired in 1995.

He was a life member of the American Dental Association, past president of Dubuque District Dental Society, and past member of Dubuque Golf and Country Club.

Roger was a White Sox fan and an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.  He loved to listen to Gary Dolphin broadcast the Hawkeye games. In his younger years, he enjoyed a good game of golf and working in his yard.

Roger is survived by his 5 children: Nancy (Jim) Rhomberg of Dubuque; Carol (Dr. Scott) Peters of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Connie (Jim) White of New Vienna, Iowa; Dr. Jim (Jodi) Nemmers of Dubuque; and Sara (Kent) Sodawasser of Marion , Iowa. He was very proud of his 14 grandchildren: Kate (Marty) Barrett, Nick (Lacy) Rhomberg, Michael Rhomberg; Matt and Megan Peters; Rob (Lauren) White, Drs. Scott (Brittany) White, and Judd White;  Drs. Peter (Claire) Nemmers, Dr. Nick Nemmers and Jacob Nemmers; David, Andrew, and Rachel Sodawasser. Also, his 6 great-grandchildren: CJ and William Barrett; Maddie and James Rhomberg; Sloane Nemmers, and Alexander White.

He is also survived by his sister, Carol Bertsch of Omaha, Nebraska, and many nieces and nephews.

Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Liz ,on Oct. 24, 2021; his parents; parents in law, Judson and Frances (Cremer) Ulrich. Also his siblings and spouses: Ruth and Dr. Stanley Miroyiannis, Glenn and Mary Nemmers, Harriet and Dr. James McKay, Joan and AJ Gerken, and Bob Bertsch.

Memorials may be given to St. Joseph the Worker Church or Holy Family Catholic Schools.   The family requests no flowers.  His family would like to thank Dr. Mark Moore, Hospice of Dubuque, and the staff at Oak Park Place and Luther Manor, for all their compassionate care of Roger.

Betty Lou Brummer

Betty Lou Brummer, age 80, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of Ida Grove, IA, completed her earthly journey on June 30, 2023, at Bethany Home in Dubuque while surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Betty’s life, a private family service is being held.  Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery in Ida Grove, IA.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Betty’s family.

Betty was born on February 26, 1943, in Riceville, IA, a daughter to Leighton and Leona (Humphrey) Zobel.  She grew up with an intrinsic love for family and friends and proudly carried this trait throughout her entire life.  After high school, Betty earned her cosmetology degree and spent almost 10 years in the field before eventually moving into retail.  She enjoyed many years working with her friends at Pamida and spent her final years as an assistant manager at Casey’s before finally moving into retirement.  She was blessed to meet the love of her life, Kenneth Brummer and the couple was united in marriage in 1963.  They were blessed with three children of their own, along with 27 wonderful years together before Kenneth was called home ahead of her in 1990.  Betty was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove  and was also a proud member of the Red Hat Society.  In her free-time, Betty always enjoyed spending time in the garden.  She also possessed an adventurous streak which was quenched yearly with her girls trips with her sisters and nieces.  They traveled extensively and always found a new experience to add to their resumes on each trip.  Betty was a kind and loving soul who truly strived to leave a positive imprint on the world around her. Her legacy will live on vividly within the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved her and we only pray now that her eternal reunion with her husband, children, and other family members who have been awaiting her arrival has been a glorious one.  Thank you, Betty, for living a life you can surely be proud of and may the Lord keep you safe in His loving and grace-filled arms until we all meet again.

Lynn A. Nissen

Lynn A. Nissen, 79, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, June 30, 2023, surrounded by her family at her home.

Lynn Ann Dreessen was born on January 6, 1944 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Jack Daniel and Nora Mae (Makinson) Dreessen.  She was a Maquoketa High School graduate.

She married Larrie L. Sagers on July 28, 1961 in Clinton, Iowa.  Three daughters were born to this union, Rae, Rhonda, and Kelly.  She and Larrie later divorced, and she married David Andrew Nissen on May 8, 1981 at the United Church of Christ in Maquoketa.

Lynn had worked at Jackson State Bank in Maquoketa for several years.  She ran the Hawkeye State Bank in Delmar for 23 years as the branch manager until it closed.  She then went to Dutrac in Maquoketa until retiring from banking.  She also worked as a bartender at the Eagles Club in Maquoketa for a few years.

Lynn enjoyed kayaking, fishing, camping, golf at Coon Hunters Lodge, deer hunting, bowling, dancing, Sunday football with the gang and drinking beer. She dearly loved and enjoyed her family and friends.

Those left to honor her memory include her lifelong best friend, Sandy Shollenberger; her children, Rae (Greg Schmitz) Simonin of Baldwin, IA, Rhonda (Jack) Hulsebus of Maquoketa, IA, and Kelly (John) Cavanagh of Maquoketa, IA; 8 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Jack “Tiff” Dreessen, and her husband David Nissen on March 18, 2023.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 6 P.M., Thursday, July 20, 2023, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 3 P.M. to 5:45 P.M. on Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home. A celebration of life reception will be held from 3 to 7 P.M., Friday, July 21, 2023, at the Timber Center in Maquoketa. A private burial will be held at a later date.

Richard L. Petrick

Richard L. “Rich” Petrick, age 78, of Dubuque, passed away at 12:47 a.m., on Friday, July 7, 2023, at Sunnycrest Manor. In keeping with his wishes there will not be any services. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street is assisting the family.

Rich was born on July 24, 1944, in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Rich went to school in Kenosha where he graduated from Kenosha High School. He worked at several places doing janitorial work and lastly worked as a security guard at A.Y. McDonald until his retirement. In his free time, he liked going camping with his friends at Camp H, sitting around the bonfire and spending the day at his favorite fishing hole. Rich was a very private man, but he will be missed by all of his friends at Ecumenical Towers.

Terry M. Denemark

Terry M. Denemark, 55, of Scotch Grove died Friday, June 30, 2023.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held from 2 – 6 pm on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello where a Memorial Service will commence at 6 pm.

Terry was born September 27, 1967, in Illinois, the son of Joseph and Barbara (Bruen) Denemark.  He attended Hinsdale Central High School in Illinois.  The family moved to Monticello and purchased Walnut Acres Campground.  He met Tammy Wilkins in 1995 and they married in 1997.  Terry worked at Energy Manufacturing in addition to helping out at the campground.

Terry enjoyed fishing, fireworks, racing of all kinds, Chicago sports, traveling to Okoboji and Branson or anywhere near water, and roller coasters.  Terry loved living in the country.

Terry is survived by his wife, Tammy, his son, Peyton, his mother, Barbara, all of Monticello, his brothers: Joseph (Terra), Denemark of Monticello and Brian (Bridgett) Denemark of Cascade, a brother-in-law, Chad Wilkins, of Altoona, and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, his parents-in-law, Bob and Louise Wilkins.

Peggy L. Stevens

Peggy L. Stevens, 79, of Baldwin, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at her home.

Peggy Le Clausen was born on September 13, 1943 in Preston, Iowa, to Harold Julius and Effie Henrietta (Jones) Clausen.  She grew up in the Preston and Goose Lake area and graduated from Goose Lake High School in 1961 where she was the Class Valedictorian.  Shortly after graduation, she married Larry Stevens.  Two children were born to this union, Jane, and Mike.

Peggy had worked various jobs, including as a secretary for the Andrew Schools and Cascade Livestock.  For many years she had worked as the secretary and administrative assistant for Maquoketa Feeds, retiring in January of 2021.

Peggy was a member of the National Barrel Horse Association and had served as a longtime area 4-H leader.  She loved barrel racing and ran her last race in April of this year.  She also loved being a grandma to everyone.

Those left to honor her memory include a daughter, Jane (Ed) Butt of Maquoketa, IA; daughter-in-law, Kay Stevens of Bethany, MO; 2 grandchildren, Jyme Stevens, and Ben Butt; sisters, Fern Ackerman of Bellevue, IA, Charlotte (Curt) Pefferman of Clinton, IA, and Judy Soenksen of LeClaire, IA; and a sister-in-law, Mary Clausen of Clinton, IA.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Mike Stevens, brother Richard Clausen, and a sister Patsy Farrell.

A gathering of family and friends celebrating Peggy’s life will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  A private family prayer service will be held.  Cremation rites have been accorded.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to Hospice of Jackson County or the Grand River Medical Oncology Unit in Dubuque.
