John J. Etienne

John J. Etienne, age 74 of Dubuque, IA completed his earthly journey on June 22, 2022 at Luther Manor Grand Meadows in Asbury with his loving family by his side.  To honor John’s life, his Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 241 Peosta Street in Peosta, IA with Rev. Michael Schueller and Rev. John Haugen officiating.  Family and friends are invited to visit one hour prior to the service at the church and also at John’s Celebration of Life which will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Barrington Lakes Pavilion, 11197 Lakeview Drive in Dubuque, following his services at the church.  Full military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League and burial will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Dubuque.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving John’s family.

John was born on December 3, 1947 in Columbus, OH, the son to Joseph A. and Nancy J (Novak) Etienne.  He was raised with a strong work ethic, an innate sense of integrity, and a natural drive and determination to make the most out of every opportunity which would present itself throughout his life.  John graduated in 1969 from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with a BS degree in Chemical Engineering.  John married his soul-mate, Jacquilyn Weiland on June 7, 1969 in Rapid City, SD.  He went to work for DuPont in Parkersburg, WV until November of 1969 when he was called to serve his country.  He served in Vietnam from September of 1970 to September of 1971 in the 2nd Armored Division. Upon returning from Vietnam, John earned his Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering from SDSM&T and returned to work at DuPont.  John and Jacquie moved to Dubuque in August of 1979 to work for John Deere.  After 31 years, he retired in May, 2010. John and Jacquie were blessed with two wonderful children.  John was a devoted husband and father.  He served 7 years as Wahlert Booster Club President investing his spare time in organizing the Dubuque parishes to staff the concessions stands for athletic events at Wahlert High School.  He proudly traveled with the Wahlert and Loras golf teams where he became known as (Homie).  John was a volunteer teacher for  Junior Achievement, he loved golfing with his friends, and he even did his best to perfect his fishing skills from time to time, but he really liked to skip rocks.  John filled many roles at John Deere over the years and took his responsibilities seriously, but none compared to his love and adoration for his family at home.  His sense of humor and story telling abilities were legendary, and his ability to make friends wherever he found himself was absolutely amazing to watch.  John’s humble spirit was continually on display for all to witness, and the memories which he leaves behind now thankfully reside within their broken hearts.  John spent his life focused on all the right areas which truly matter in this world:  faith, family, and fun.  He understood that balance was not only a prerequisite to a truly joy filled life, but that it would also bless the lives of those around him whom he loved so much.  As sad as we are today with the realization that John’s bright light will not shine quite as brightly in our daily lives moving forward, we are forever grateful for the 74 years in which the Lord was willing to share him with us.  Thank you, John, for leading by example and teaching us so many important lessons along your journey.  May the Lord bless you and keep you safe in His loving arms until we meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of John include,

his beautiful bride of 53 years,
Jacquilyn “Jacquie” Etienne, Dubuque, IA;

his two loving children,
Joel (Amy) Etienne, Norwalk, IA,
and Jocelyn (Brent) Harseim, Fisher, IL;

his five adored grandchildren,
Peyton Etienne, Madelyn Etienne, Kinley Jo Etienne, Ella Harseim, and Gage Dean Harseim;

his siblings,
Michele (Mike) Keegan, Kingsport, TN,
Larry (Ann) Etienne, Omaha, NE,
and Susan (Steve) Arensen, Florence, SD;

along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Robert H. Pelelo

Robert H. “Bob” Pelelo, of Dubuque, passed away at 3:25 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2022, the day after his 54th birthday, at home and surrounded by people who loved him.

To celebrate Bob’s life, family and friends may visit from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at Steeple Square, 101 East 15th Street in Dubuque.   A funeral service will begin at 11:30 a.m., with Pastor Kaity Kemp officiating.  Private family burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is assisting the family.

Bob, born on June 17, 1968, was the 7th and final child of Alex and Lila (Fagan) Pelelo, and he was raised, as were his siblings, on the family farm in Merrill, Iowa. This setting left an indelible impact on him, as evidenced in a love of getting his hands dirty while landscaping and planting small gardens of vegetables and flowers (that, as his wife lamented, fed the neighborhood deer well), his uncontrollable urge to give a long, loving ear-scratch to any dog that came within 100 yards of him, and the many hours he spent on his John Deere, mowing lawns and moving snow.

He met the love of his life, Ann Ritt, in January of 1998, and they eloped to Charleston, South Carolina, on May 11, 2000. The couple was blessed with 2 fantastic sons and 22 wonderful years of marriage. Fittingly, their last family trip was to Charleston to revisit the site where this married life began.

Bob earned a degree in Computer Information Systems from Clarke University, and his young sons were blessed to observe a man work full-time, study part-time and love his family all the time, as he completed that degree.  For the past 19 years, Bob felt privileged to contribute to the important services that Jo-Carroll Energy provides, and he felt blessed to work with very special people he called “family.” He also valued being a member of 1st Congregational United Church of Christ in Dubuque, as well as Landmark Masonic Lodge #103 in Sioux City, Eastern Star, and Sioux City Scottish Rite Valley.

Bob was a farm boy at heart and a talented handyman who could fix just about anything. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing with friends, agonizingly watching the Chicago Cubs and the Tottenham Hotspurs frequently lose, hanging out at Bobby and Brenda’s trailer in Buenie, drinking beer in the driveway with Ann, Greg and Joyce, monthly poker nights and being the most “decent” member of the Supper Club Supper Club. Bob had a 6th sense that led him to magically appear when someone needed a helping hand.  He also had the ability to strike up a conversation with anyone he met, a gift that his introverted wife greatly admired.  His family was central to his being, and he wouldn’t miss his sons’ activities, including athletic, musical and theatrical events.  He was thrilled to have traveled with his family extensively, across not only the United States, but Europe and Africa as well.  The last pieces of advice he imparted to his sons were “always choose to travel” and “always choose to be kind.” Bob was a kind, compassionate and loving person who made the lives of those around him better just for knowing him.  He will be deeply missed.

Those left to cherish Bob’s memory include

his wife,
Dr. Ann Pelelo, Dubuque, IA;

2 sons,
Thomas Pelelo
and Joshua Pelelo, both of Dubuque, IA;

Bob’s family would like to thank Dr. Pashtoon Kasi and Dr. Saima Sharif from the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, and Hospice of Dubuque, especially Paul, Chris and Sara, for the compassionate support they provided to Bob and his family during his journey with cancer.  We lack the words to express our gratitude for Linda and Linley, who lovingly joined Ann, Thomas and Josh during the last 24 hours of Bob’s life on this earth.  Like Linda and Linley, Greg and Joyce and the Manternach/Mader clan have been steadfastly by our sides; we love you. In addition, we are grateful for and love the Supper Club Supper Club members and their eternal, varied and “decent” sustenance, which has been a constant source of normalcy and laughter.

In lieu of flowers, the family will gratefully receive your support through greeting cards and memorials in Bob’s memory, which may be mailed to Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, Dubuque, Iowa 52001, Attn. Bob Pelelo Family.

Margie A. Trumm, DC

Margie A. Trumm, D.C., 62, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio and formerly of Cascade, Iowa, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2022 in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Visitation for Margie will be held from 3 to 7 p.m., on Monday, June 27, 2022, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, Iowa, where a wake service will be held at 2:30 p.m.  Funeral Services for Margie are at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in (Temple Hill) Cascade, Iowa with Rev. Mark Osterhaus officiating.  Eucharistic Minister is Emily Trumm.  Lector is Sr. LaDonna Manternach.  Placing of the pall will be done by Betty Trumm, Judy Hayes, Donna Kennedy, Ann Noreen, Lois Hayes, Joe Trumm and Connie Trumm.  Giftbearers are Annie Trumm and Katelyn Trumm.  Burial is in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Richard Kowalczuk, D.C., Dennis O’Hara, D.C., Roger Kasperbauer, D.C., and Scott Firzcak, D.C. Casketbearers for Margie are Tyler Hayes, Todd Noreen, Alex Noreen, Ryan Kennedy, Matthew Kennedy, Robert Trumm, Philip Trumm and David Trumm.

She was born January 1, 1960 in Monticello, Iowa, daughter of Robert W. and Mary Elizabeth “Betty” (McCarthy) Trumm.  She received her education in St. Peter’s and St. Mary’s schools.  She is a graduate of Western Dubuque High School.  She received her Associates of Science Degree from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Doctrine of Chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.  She had a private practice in Des Moines before relocating to Ohio where she was employed with Health Quest Chiropractic in Reynoldsburg, Ohio.

Margie was a caring, compassionate person who worked hard all her life, made due, did without, put others first even if it meant sacrificing herself in order to help others.  Quietly and tirelessly, she worked behind the scenes in order to help others, rarely said “No” to anyone asking for her help.  Yet rarely if ever, spoke of any of this to anyone. Never seeking glory, fame or recognition for her good deeds.

Even though Margie resided in Ohio, in her heart she was always home on the family farm in Temple Hill, Iowa, where she enthusiastically enjoyed helping with chores.  She loved Christmas, the meaning and all the celebrations with family and friends that went with it.  She was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Parish in Temple Hill.  Her devotion to her faith and family, and especially her compassion shown to her youngest sister and godchild, Connie shows the example of the simple life she felt was important to follow and the purity of her selflessness to others.

She is survived by her mother, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Trumm of Cascade, IA’ six siblings, Judy (Larry) Hayes of Peosta, IA, Donna (Garry) Kennedy of Palatine, IL, Ann (Kipp) Noreen of West Dundee, IL, Lois (Dan) Hayes of St. Donatus, IA, Joe (Sara) Trumm of Cascade, IA, Connie Trumm both of Cascade, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her father, Robert W. Trumm on June 11, 2012; her grandparents, John & Elizabeth (Poutenbaugm) Trumm and Joseph and Agnes (Otting) McCarthy and one niece, Natalie Hayes.

A Margie A. Trumm memorial fund has been established.
