Herbert J. Tegeler

Dr. Rachel A. Schemmel

Rachel Anne Schemmel, age 92, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of Dyersville, IA and East Lansing, MI, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 15, 2022.

Visitation will be held from 9 – 10 a.m. on Friday, June 3, 2022 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Worthington, Iowa with a Memorial Mass to commence at 10:30 a.m.  Burial will follow at St. Paul Cemetery in Worthington.

Rachel was born in 1929 to Frederic A. and Emma (Melchert) Schemmel on the family farm in Farley, Iowa.  She attended St Joseph School in Farley, graduated from Mount Mercy College and then earned her bachelors degree at Clarke College in 1951. Along with the Dietetic Internship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Dr Schemmel received her masters degree in Nutrition from the University of Iowa in 1952.  After working as a dietitian in Los Angeles, she began teaching Food Science & Human Nutrition at Michigan State University, where she earned her PhD. She was a trailblazer for women in the Sciences and her career helped pave the path for many female academics and professionals who studied with her during 45 years at MSU.

She earned a distinguished international reputation for studies of dietary factors in the development of obesity with hundreds of publications to her credit. She conducted research at Cambridge University in Cambridge, England. The rodent DNA model of dietary obesity, which she developed at MSU, continues to serve as the basis for work by other researchers to this day.

She is the recipient of numerous awards including Outstanding Alumni Awards from each college she attended, Women Achievers Award, a Leader Award and a Borden Research Award from the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, ASNS Fellow Award for Experimental Biology, Dietetic Educator Awards from both the Michigan and American Dietetic Associations, and the Distinguished Faculty Award and Research and Outreach Awards from Michigan State University.

She served as past president of the Michigan Dietetics Association, and provided professional services to the American Dietetics Association, American Society for Nutritional Sciences, North American Association for the Study of Obesity and the Michigan Heart Association.  She is a life member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and is listed in multiple Who’s Who publications.

Rachel was a devout Catholic. She enjoyed genealogical research and traveled to Germany in that pursuit. She organized fun family reunions attended by hundreds.  She loved her gardens and the beautiful flowering cherry tree outside her window in East Lansing.  A great cook and hostess, she often opened her home to students who were alone at the holidays or otherwise needing a meal and good conversation.  She enjoyed writing poetry and contributed articles to various organizations such as The Iowa Barn Foundation and The New Vienna (Iowa) Historical Society.  She traveled the world with her many dear friends/colleagues.  A loyal MSU Spartans fan, she especially enjoyed football and women’s basketball.  Her spirit was joyous and generous.

Those left to cherish her memory include her niece Deborah (Lee David) Fautsch of Dubuque, with whom she lived until recently, niece Sheree Ann Meyer (Byron Shuford) of Orlando Florida, nephew Richard (Kathy) Adams of Tucson, Arizona, great nephew Justin (Judy) Fautsch of Pasadena, California, and great niece, Kristin Kielpinski of Parker, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Virginia Meyer, half sister Lucile Adams,  half brother Floyd Schemmel, brothers in law Dr. Herbert Meyer and Horace A. Adams.

Ida Mae Norton

Ida Mae Norton, 72 of Galena, IL passed away Monday, May 23, 2022, with her children at her side at Galena Stauss Senior Care Community. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, May 28, 2022, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena where friends may call after 9 AM until the time of service. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena next to her husband of thirty-nine years, Robert W. Norton Sr.

She was born November 30, 1949, in Hazel Green, WI the daughter of Elmer Harwick and Hazel Phillips. Ida was united in marriage to Robert W. Norton Sr. on November 30, 1967, and he preceded her in death on July 23, 2007.  Three children were born into this union, Sheri (Andy) Hornung, Kelly Ashford, and Robert W. (Tina) Norton Jr., eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren,two sisters, Donna (Ken) Muchow and Karen Hughes, and many nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, John Phillips.

Frances A. Schroeder

Frances A. (Farni) Schroeder, age 102, of Dubuque, passed away due to Covid 19 complications at 9:30 p.m., on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at Stonehill Care Center surrounded by her loving family.  To celebrate Frances’ life, family and friends may visit from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at St. Anthony’s Church, 1880 Saint Ambrose Street.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, at St. Anthony’s Church with Rev. Steven J. Rosonke officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is assisting the family.

Frances was born on August 9, 1919, at home at 5 Points in Dubuque County, daughter of John and Gertrude (Breitbach) Farni.

Frances was a life long resident of Dubuque and graduated from the Immaculate Conception Academy.  She married Alvin Schroeder on August 19, 1950, in Dubuque.  They were blessed with 9 wonderful children and married for 43 years before Alvin passed away on May 7, 1994.  She worked as a waitress at the Woolworth’s Coffee Shop, at A.Y. McDonald Mfg. for 4 ½ years and at American Optical for a year, but her primary focus was always on caring for her home and family.  She graduated from Paris Beauty Academy in Cedar Rapids and was a beautician for several years at Di-Ann’s Beauty Shop, as well as styling clients at Stonehill and in private homes for those who were not able to get out to the salon.  Frances was very active with her community and was a long time member of St. Anthony’s Church, Rosary Society and also sang in the choir.  She was a member of St. Joseph’s Circle, German Club, Al-Anon of Dubuque, ARK Advocates, an Immaculate Conception Alumni and volunteered countless hours at Stonehill.  She also loved cooking, baking, (her cinnamon rolls were fantastic), and canning all of the bounty from her extensive garden.  Frances truly loved her family and took great pride in all of their achievements.  She was a strong woman who experienced many changes in her 102 years here on Earth.  We will miss her more than words can convey and look forward to the day we are all reunited in Heaven.

James W. Maus

James W. “Jamie” Maus, age 50, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully at 10:28 p.m., on Monday, May 16, 2022, at home surrounded by his loving family.  To celebrate Jamie’s life private family services were held.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is assisting the family.

Jamie was born on September 3, 1971, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Richard and Neva (Campbell) Maus Sr.

Jamie attended Prescott and Hoover Elementary Schools and the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton.  After school, he worked at Stonehill Care Center, first on an ARC crew and most recently directly for Stonehill in the laundry room for a grand total of 30 years.  He was a happy-go-lucky person who was always helpful and enjoyed caring for his family and for others.  He loved to listen to music of any genre, watch movies and especially enjoyed the 3 Stooges.  Jamie was also a huge fan of Garfield the Cat.  His family meant the world to Jamie and he loved spending time with everyone.  He was a kind and gentle soul and he will be greatly missed by all!

Arthur Wille

Arthur “Art” Wille, 58, of Dubuque, passed away on May 23 at home surrounded by his family, after a two-year battle with colon cancer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 28th, 2022, at Holy Family Church with Fr. Rodney Allers and Fr. John Moser officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery. After the burial, a celebration honoring Art’s life will be held at the home of Margie and Jerry Behnke in Epworth, Iowa.

Art was born on May 30, 1963 in Dubuque, son of Agnes (Theisen) and Edward Wille. He graduated from Leo High School in Holy Cross in 1981. Art married Sandy (Behnke) on June 25, 1999 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Peosta, IA.

Art worked at Nordstrom Distribution for many years, drove truck for Yellow freight, Nortran, U.S. mail truck and UPS. Most recently he was employed at Behnke Trailers.

Art enjoyed spending time outdoors gardening, fishing, and working in his food plots to feed the deer every winter. He loved attending his sons’ baseball and basketball games and track meets. Art was an honest man who had the ability to converse with anyone at any time. He will be remembered by friends and family as a very faithful, caring, and loving man. He was extremely proud of his sons.

Art is survived by his wife Sandy (Behnke) and two sons, Evan and Jon; his parents Ed and Agnes; three sisters Margie (Jerry) Behnke, Barb (Jim) Behnke and Tracy (Ray) Hauser; his three brothers Ken (Lisa), Greg (Roxanne) and Jason (Suzanne). Also surviving, his parents-in-law Mel and Barb Behnke; his two sisters-in-law Sue (Mark) Hartung and Dee (Jason) Froehlich; his three brothers-in-law Dan (Darlene) Behnke, Doug (Dee) Behnke and Dale (Jessica) Behnke. He has many nieces and nephews. Art was proceeded in death by a sister-in-law, Sherry Behnke.

We would like to thank the Drs and staff at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic, Mayo Clinic, and Hospice of Dubuque for assistance in Art’s fight. Most of all we have immense gratitude to all our family, friends, teammates and parents, coworkers, and our Holy Family faith family for their support, generosity, prayers, time, and comfort. Norman E. Hein

Norman Earl Hein, age 95, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away May 23rd, 2022, at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital.

Norm was born on January 22, 1927 in Dubuque, IA, the son of Edward Earl Hein and Ruth B. Botsford Hein.  He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1945.

After high school, Norm pursued a career in entertainment in California playing trumpet and singing in dance bands. Eventually, he returned to Dubuque, uniting in marriage to Gloria Ann Reuschel on May 1, 1954, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.  He worked at Wm. C. Brown Company Publishers in several positions for 44 years.  His work included managing company sales in the Great Lakes Region, while living in Bowling Green, Ohio, for 12 years.  The people he worked with were very special to him.  He always had a wonderful story to tell about their accomplishments.  Norm eventually moved back to East Dubuque, Illinois, where he and Gloria built their last home, happily hosting family and friends for many years.

All his life, Norm had a passion and natural talent for music.  He was a member of the local musician’s union, playing the trumpet, with dance bands at Dubuque’s music venue, Melody Mill.  When he stopped playing in dance bands, he sang in church and at weddings.

Norm enjoyed his church, gardening, baking, showing his collectable Thunderbird, driving in parades and organizing his high school reunions. Tennis was always a love that brought out his competitive side, playing regularly through his 80’s.  Norm and Gloria took great enjoyment in traveling to Europe and Florida.  When long distance travel became a challenge, Norm would entertain his family by dining at local restaurants.  Much to the delight of his family, he always selected a good red wine and insisted on picking up the tab.  Norm was devoted to his family, the joy and light of his life. He was known for being a gentleman and treating everyone with kindness and respect.

In addition to his wife, Gloria of 68 years, Norm is survived by their children Brad (Denise) Hein of Addison, Michigan, Brett (Coleen) Hein of Dubuque, Iowa; grandchildren: Kyle Hein, Trevor Hein, Erin (Kent) Ives and Maggie (Ryan) McDonald; great grandchildren:  Brycen Hein and Olivia Ives.  Norm was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Ruth Hein and in-laws Herman and Martha Reuschel.

Eglehof, Siegert, & Casper Funeral Home, 2659 John F. Kennedy Rd, is in charge of arrangements.  Memorial contributions may be given to Dubuque County Right to Life, 2205 Carter Rd., Dubuque, IA 52001. According to Norm’s wishes, cremation will take place.  A celebration of Norm’s life will be held at a later date.

Angela Winter

On May 22, 2022, Angela “Angie” Winter passed away peacefully at home at the age of 53. Angie was born to Stephen and Margaret (Harwick) Townsend on January 28, 1969.  She is a 1987 alumna of Scales Mound High School. She obtained her Associate’s Degree from Highland Community College, a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Dubuque, and Master’s Degree in Education from National Louis University. She married Steve Winter on November 21, 1992, and they raised two children, Lauren and Erin.

Angie is known to her family as an incredibly talented gift-giver. The greatest gifts she leaves us are her love of learning, which she shared with generations of students; the way she seeks a challenge, which meant she enjoyed hunting, fishing, puzzles, and the friendly (but steep) competition in a family game of cards. Her competitive nature found her enjoying many sports; playing softball with Steve as many as five nights a week in the summers, playing volleyball at Highland and coaching volleyball at both Shullsburg and Scales Mound. Her skills as an educator and competitor helped her lead Scales Mound to its first appearance in a State tournament and most successful season in any sport. She was named Scales Mound’s 2011 Outstanding Alumni of the Year and Telegraph Herald’s Coach of the Year. Angie loved spending her summers outdoors on the lake, vacationing with her family, cheering on the Chicago Cubs; and, with a margarita in her hand, jamming out to a good Kenny Chesney, Rick Springfield or Jimmy Buffett tune.

Angie is preceded in death by her grandparents Arthur and Marcella Harwick, S.A. and Jean Townsend, father-in-law Cleland Winter, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.  She is survived by her husband, Steve, their two children Lauren (Taylor Becktold) and Erin (Patrick Grund), her parents Steve and Margaret Townsend, brother Steve Townsend, Jr., niece Sonja (Tyler) Richardson, nephew Sam Townsend, mother-in-law Judy Winter, brother- and sister-in-law Doug and Susan Winter and nephew Bradley Winter.

Angie and family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and doctors at MercyOne Dubuque Cancer Center for their dedicated role in Angie’s care over the past 23 years, especially Dr. Lawrence Kukla, Dr. Eric Engelman, Dr. Tammi Noonan, and Jenny Redfearn. In addition, our great appreciation to the staff of Hospice of Dubuque for their compassionate care this past month.

A visitation will be held at Miller-Steinke Funeral Home of Scales Mound on Thursday May 26th from 3-7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday May 27th at 11:00 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Scales Mound, with Fr. Howard Barch, Jr. officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery. Details about a Celebration of Life will be shared at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, we encourage memorials to be made to the Scales Mound School library and/ or Hospice of Dubuque.

James A. Hudson II

James A. “Jim” Hudson II, 52, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on May 21, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am until 12:00 on Thursday, May 26, 2022, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd. where a funeral service will be held at 12:00. Burial will be at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Jim was born on November 7, 1969, in Dubuque, Iowa the son of James Arnold Hudson and Donna (Hample) Hudson.

After graduating from Dubuque Senior High School, Jim went on to work various jobs, first at Econo Foods, FDL, True Green and lastly, MI-T-M.

Jim was a son, brother and father. He was hard working and had a great sense of humor. He always stopped to say hello. Jim was a big film fan, and enjoyed The Dukes of Hazard, Sons of Anarchy, Smokey and the Bandit and Convoy. He loved spending time with his family, building things, and giving advice. Jim would often mow his neighbor’s lawns and was known as “Betty Crocker”. Grilling and cooking were another passion along with his dogs, Deisel and Babs.

Jim is survived by his mother, Donna Hudson (Larry Barlow); sons, James “Jimmy” Hudson III, Jake Hudson (Annika Sunleaf), and Alex Hudson; daughters, Alyssa Hudson, Kaylin Crippes, sister, Wanda Russet (Tom), niece, Jessica Rheault (Adam), great niece, Ellie Rheautl.

He is preceded in death by his father, James Arnold Hudson.

Sacha A. Schumacher

Sacha Ann Schumacher, 44 of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on May 20th, 2022 at home

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday May 26th, 2022 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 27th, 2022 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory with Dennis Schmitt officiating. Burial will follow in Scott Cemetery, in Glen Haven, WI.

Sacha was born on December 14, 1977 in Iowa City, Iowa the daughter of Dave Schumacher and Julie DeMaio.

Sacha attended Dubuque Senior High School and Northeast Iowa Community College. She worked for Ennoble Nursing and Rehabilitation

Sacha’s life was far too brief, but she lived it with all her heart. Her gentle spirit touched the lives of everyone who knew her. She saw the good in everyone. Her children, granddaughter and family were her world, and she will forever live on through them. Sacha’s adoration for nature and all of God’s creatures was undeniable. Her pets were like her children and she even welcomed the strays that always seemed to find their way to her.

Sacha was known for her beautiful smile and contagious laugh. She loved to laugh! She preferred to blend into the crowd yet couldn’t help from lighting up the room. She loved music, and funny movies and we will surely miss the movies lines she would imitate with perfection.

Sacha made this world a better place and we will keep her memory alive until we meet again.

She is survived by her parents Dave (Rachel) Schumacher, Julie (Denny) DeMaio-Troy, and Donald (Kathy) Schiltz; two children: Sydney Kuczen, and Beau Healey; her granddaughter Remy Brown; her siblings Brandi (Toby) Moeggenberg, Dave (Karen) Schumacher and Alexis Schumacher, along with stepsiblings: Zach, Wes, Clarissa, and Elijah.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Theodore J. Meyer

Theodore J. “Ted” Meyer, age 63 of Dubuque, Iowa, completed his journey on earth May 25, 2020, at home, surrounded by his loving family. To honor Ted’s life, his Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2022, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Eagle View Pavilion at Eagle Point Park, 2601 Shiras Avenue in Dubuque.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Ted’s family.

Ted was born on June 2, 1956, in Dubuque, Iowa, one of nine children, to Lowell and Mary Agnes (Kretschmer) Meyer.  He was raised to appreciate the values of love and respect for family and friends, coupled with an unrivaled work ethic.  He spent his free time, as a teenager, learning his trade at The William C. Brown Publishing Co. His career there lasted over 35 years as an electrician, even through the multiple changes of ownership. He finally retired in 2010 with a sense of accomplishment and great pride.

Ted was never the type of man who could sit still very long.  Whether he was working on his ’55 Chevy in his garage or tackling the next project around his house, Ted’s hands never laid idle. He spent his downtime watching his favorite drivers, Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr., lead the pack around the NASCAR track. Ted’s personal drive in life carried him to a place of true contentment with a deep knowledge on how to have a good time.

Our hearts are broken and numb today as we face the sad reality that our genuinely kind and compassionate father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother and friend has left us behind. We know that the abundance of memories he left us with will help us through the most difficult days until we are reunited once again. Thank you, Ted, for leading by example as we watched you show us how it’s done.

Ted was preceded in death by his father Lowell “L.J.” Meyer; three brothers, Jeff Meyer, Doug Meyer, Rick Meyer; and a brother-in-law, Dave Hoffman.

Ted’s family would like to thank Jane and Maggie for all of their time, patience and enduring love which was shared so generously with Ted as he battled multiple health problems over the past few years.  Your kindness is appreciated more than we could ever express.

Debra J. Vonderhaar

Debra J. Vonderhaar, 65, of Holy Cross, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2022 at MercyOne in Dubuque, surrounded by her family.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at Kramer Funeral Home in Holy Cross.  A Eulogy and Sharing Service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery at a later date.

Debra was born on December 29, 1956 in Dubuque, the daughter of Walter and Rosemary (Morris) Wilhelm.  She graduated from Senior High School in Dubuque with the class of 1975. Deb worked at Ertl’s for many years.  She furthered her education at NICC for computer programing and began working at McKesson as a programmer.  She later worked at FS in Dubuque and she retired in 2011.   Debra loved being with her family. Her grandchildren were her life.   She spoiled them with snacks, toys and candy.  Deb loved to shop, she was always looking for a sale.  She had a heart of gold and nine lives.

Survivors include her children: Tiffany (Philip) Moser of Colesburg, Heather (Owen Boge) Vonderhaar of Earlville, Tony Vonderhaar of Holy Cross, four grandchildren, Drew and Kenzie Moser, Elise and Paxton Boge, fiancé, Dave Bries of Epworth, step-children, Ryan (Danielle) Bries, Stacie (Knut) Morken, sisters, Karon Adams, Sheryl Wilhelm, Sue Skala and Mary Kann, brother-in-law, Robie (Amy) Vonderhaar.

She was preceded in death by her parents, parents -in-law, Leonard and Margaret Vonderhaar, husband, Steven Vonderhaar, sisters, Kathy Walburn, Lou Wilhelm, Linda Ludovissy, brother-in-laws, Randy and Jimmy Vonderhaar.

The family would like to thank Dr. Janes and the staff at MercyOne ICU for their exceptional  care for Debra during her illness.

Ronald J. Droeszler

Ronald “Ron” J. Droeszler, 70, of Sabula, IA formerly of Dubuque, passed away on May 20th, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 25th, 2022, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a funeral service will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Ron was born on January 14, 1952, in Platteville, WI the son of Harlan and Eileen (Kerkenbush) Droeszler. He married Debra Frick on May 12th, 1975 in Dubuque, IA.

He worked many years at Eagle Window and Door until retirement, then he went on to work at United Clinical Labs and Sams Club to keep him busy part time.

Ron loved painting, playing cards and dice especially with Ariana, going to the casino, and spending time with the fur grandbabies.

He is survived by his wife Deb; his children Amy (Mike) Reiter and Sara (Darren) Schmidt; grandchildren Ariana and Nathan; his brother, Robert (Jane) Droeszler; his sisters: Barb Dean, Mary and Nancy Droeszler, Ann (Phil) Mowbray, Vicky (Dan) Long, as well as many nieces and nephews

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; his parents in-law Walter & Iola Frick, a sister in infancy Susie; a nephew Wesley Droeszler; and in-laws Chuck (Diane) Frick, Sharon (Ted) Lightcap, and Dalven Dean.

In lieu of flowers, a Ronald J. Droeszler memorial fund has been established.

Shirley K. Current

Shirley K. (Nabb) Current, 78, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Saturday morning, May 21, 2022, at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

A celebration of her life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, May 28, 2022, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Friday, May 27, 2022, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Cremation will follow the services, and burial will be at Union Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa, at a later date.

Shirley Kay Current was born on April 7, 1944 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Clyde and Neoma (Bickford) Nabb.  She was a 1962 graduate of Maquoketa High School.  She married Richard Dean Current in 1963 and to this union two children were born, Pamela and Cory.

Shirley had worked for the Jackson County Credit Bureau, Hughes Transport, 21 years at U.S. Bank, and lastly for RCS Computers and Appliance.

Shirley loved quilting, embroidery, travel, putting puzzles together, stamp and coin collecting, stock car racing, playing bingo and slot machines, Christmas all year round, and most importantly spending time with her family.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Richard Current of Maquoketa, IA; children, Pamela (Marty) Eganhouse of Anamosa, IA, and Cory (Scarlet) Current of St. Louis, MO; brothers, Alvin (Penny) Nabb of Colorado Springs, CO, and Lloyd (Shauna) Nabb of Maquoketa, IA; and 3 grandchildren, Micayla of Cedar Rapids, IA, Derek of Anamosa, IA, and Rebekah of Chico, CA.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

James N. Speltz

James “Jim” Nicholas Speltz, 85, of Dubuque, passed away on Thursday May 19, 2022, at Stonehill Care Center.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday May 25, 2022, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Father Steve Rosonke officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League at St. Anthony’s after Mass. Friends and family may visit from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday May 25, at the church. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family.

Jim was born on September 4, 1936, in Farley, Iowa to Ralph and Mary Agnes (McDermott) Speltz. He attended St. Columbkille’s school in Dubuque. He was a proud United States Marine Corps Veteran who served from 1954-1957 and was a member of the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Every birthday and Christmas his family would compete to surprise him with the best Marine Corps memorabilia to see his pride shine through, “Semper Fi.” Jim married his wife Nancy Hinkel on October 5, 1963. After he returned from the service, he was a barber and worked at the Dubuque Packing Company. After retirement he enjoyed traveling around in his van visiting small towns in the area and collecting antiques. He brought home many antiques to give to his family. He refurbished antique furniture in his shop at home while listening and singing along with his favorite oldie’s music. Jim was a loyal Green Bay Packers fan and loved to watch the games with his family and friends and he also enjoyed playing sports with his family.

Jim is survived by his wife Nancy Speltz of Dubuque, four children William (Julie) Speltz of Missoula, MT, Robert (Dawn) Speltz of Cedar Falls, IA, Ann (Tim) Gourley of Dubuque, and Timothy Speltz of Rockford, IL, nine grandchildren Christina Gourley of Dubuque, Mitch (Sarah) Speltz of Rockford, Samantha Speltz of Scottsdale, AZ, Brianna (Tyler) Verlanic of Missoula, MT, James Gourley of Colorado Springs, CO, Josie Speltz of Chicago, IL, Joseph (Caroline) Gourley of San Diego, CA, Virginia Speltz of Rockford, IL, and Willem Speltz of Rockford, IL, two great grandchildren Bauer Speltz of Missoula, MT and Emerson Verlanic of Missoula, MT, four sisters Joan Lampe, Nancy Frommelt, Bonnie Stender, and Sharon (Gerald) Lochner, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Mary Agnes and Ralph, sister Coletta Tigges, brothers-in-law Cletus Tigges, Earl Lampe, John Frommelt, and Thomas Stender, and nephew TJ Stender.

The family would like to thank the nurses and CNAs at Stonehill Care Center, and Hospice of Dubuque for their support and care.
