Douglas J. McGuine
Douglas John “Digger” McGuine, of Guttenberg, Iowa, passed away on June 21, 2025, surrounded by love and laughter—the very way he lived his life. Known for his unmistakable humor, contagious laugh, and signature phrase “cock-a-doodle-do,” he never missed a chance to stir the pot or lovingly aggravate someone just enough to make them smile.
Visitation will be held from 4 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at Morris Funeral Home in Guttenberg, Iowa. Visitation will continue Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg, Iowa, prior to funeral services.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg, Iowa, with burial following in the church cemetery. Rev. Paul Kwaku Ameyaw will officiate.
Born on February 16, 1941, Digger grew up with two brothers and two sisters, creating a childhood full of stories that became family legends. He attended St. Mary’s School in Guttenberg, where he graduated—and likely left a lasting impression on every teacher along the way.
From a young age, he shared a special bond with his father, who introduced him to coin collecting—an interest he carried throughout his life. He also developed a deep passion for collecting guns, a hobby that matched his sharp eye and steady hand.
After high school, under the encouragement of his mother—and perhaps the authorities—Digger joined the United States Army. He proudly served for three years as a Gunner while stationed in France. His military service only deepened his lifelong interest in firearms, and many were fortunate enough to witness his impressive marksmanship.
When he returned home, he reunited with the love of his life, Jerri Ludovissy. They married on May 17, 1969, and together built a home filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. They raised three children in Guttenberg: Kristine (Milo) Lucas, Kelly (Paul) Meyers, and Kiley (Grace) McGuine.
Digger worked at John Deere and Celotex before taking a leap of faith in 1987 to purchase Moxie’s Tap in Guttenberg—a beloved local bar that remains in the family today. There, he shared his gift for storytelling, laughter, and good company with everyone who walked through the door.
By his side through many chapters of life was his loyal dog, Wrigley, who brought him daily joy and companionship. Equally close was his best friend, Roger Bailey—the two were inseparable, always together and always up to something. Digger also shared a special bond with longtime friend and bartender Tracy Hinzman, who he loved and treated as family.
Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Jerri; children: Kristine (Milo) Lucas, Kelly (Paul) Meyers, and Kiley (Grace) McGuine; and his adored grandchildren: Brittany (Phil) Rausch of Guttenberg, Ryan (Morgan Bohr) Lucas of Altoona, Brooke Lucas of Bettendorf, Jacob Lucas of Guttenberg, Marissa (Kalen) Backes of Amana, Tristan Meyers of Holy Cross, Treyton (Sydney Bonert) Meyers of Epworth, Gabriella Meyers of Guttenberg, Brody, Sienna, and Kade McGuine of Guttenberg; he also adored his five great-grandchildren: Axel, Eden, and Luka Rausch; Quinn Backes; and Weston Meyers.
Digger is survived by his brother: Kenneth (Sue) McGuine and Tim (Penny) McGuine; his sister, Toni Boardman, all of Guttenberg; sisters-in-law: Jane Johnson, Julie (Art) Willie, Cindy (Pat) Wachendorf, and Dixie (Paul) Beckman; along with many nieces and nephews who will also cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Anna Mae McGuine; his in-laws, Francis (Duke) and Louise Ludovissy; his sister, Mary McGuine; sister-in-law, Connie (Jack) Harbaugh; brother-in-law, John Johnson; and nephews: Jackie Harbaugh and Nicholas Wachendorf.
Whether you knew him as a husband, father, grandfather, friend, veteran, or simply as “Digger”—the guy who made you laugh until you cried—he was truly one of a kind. A character who filled every room with humor, heart, and just the right amount of trouble.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the joy of knowing him.
Morris Funeral Home in Guttenberg is assisting the family. Information is available at https://www.kramer-morrisfuneralhome.com.

Sheri L. Anthony
Sheri L. Anthony, age 52, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on June 18, 2025, at UnityPoint Finley Hospital with her loving family by her side. To honor Sheri’s life, a private family Celebration of Life is being held. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Sheri’s family.
Sheri was born on November 9, 1972, in Dubuque, IA, a daughter to Paul and Jannan (Ryan) Anthony. She was gifted with a genuinely sweet and pure soul which would easily brighten any room she ventured into. Her love for her family and friends was unwavering and her commitment to caring for those around her never failed. She invested her time with a few businesses around town over the years including Anderson Window, Nordstrom’s and Eagle’s Country Market most recently, but for those who knew her best, they were always aware of the fact that her heart and minds were undeniably right back at home with her family. Sheri resided on the more shy side of life in large gatherings, but within her intimate circles, she was vibrant and open for any adventure which arose. She has been known to try her luck at the casino from time to time, but again, a little quiet time with a fishing pole in hand, or a relaxing drive in the countryside with her canine companions, Daisy and Peanut, were where she found true satisfaction. It’s almost impossible to relate in words what the pain of losing such a caring and kind spirit feels like today. The world was so much better off with her walking among us than without. We seek some peace and comfort in knowing that Sheri is now free from her earthly battles, but can only pray for healing in our own hearts in the midst of her physical absence now moving forward. Thank you, Sheri, for sharing all of the love and light that you could while you were walking among us and may you find eternal peace in the loving arms of our Heavenly Father until we all see your beautiful smile once again.
Those left behind to cherish the memory of Sheri include,
her two adored children,
Taylor Gloden, Dubuque, IA,
and Cody Gloden, Dubuque, IA;
her two brothers,
Scott Anthony, Dubuque, IA,
and Brett Anthony, Dubuque, IA;
her parents,
Paul (Jannan) Anthony, Dubuque, IA;
her aunt,
Sandy (Vaughn) Daman, Epworth, IA;
along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Patrick W. Gabriel
Patrick W. “Pat” Gabriel, age 79, of Dubuque IA, and Estero, FL, completed his earthly journey suddenly on June 19, 2025, at UnityPoint Finley Hospital in Dubuque while surrounded by his loving family. To honor Pat’s life, a Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at the Church of the Resurrection, 4300 Asbury Road in Dubuque, with Rev. Phil Gibbs officiating. Family and friends are invited to join in fellowship for one hour prior to the service at the church. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Pat’s family.
Pat was born on March 17, 1946, in Dubuque, IA, a son to Leon “Barney” and Beatrice (Kranich) Gabriel. He loved his family, embraced his friends, and enjoyed each day he was given. He met and married the love of his life, Mary Duehr, on August 27, 1966, and the two were blessed with 58 wonderful years together and three children. Pat graduated from Wahlert High School in 1964 and then earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Northern Iowa, where he was also a member of the varsity basketball team. He went on to work as Supervisor at John Deere Dubuque Works until he retired in 2001. Pat eagerly moved into the retirement stage of life where he and Mary began making their new life in Florida.
Pat and Mary have been members at Thunder Hills Golf Club for over 50 years and were avid golfers. Pat was blessed to make countless friendship along the way in both Dubuque and Florida. Pat was a very talented woodworker as well, and many of the meticulously designed pieces of furniture are still enjoyed by his family and friends. It’s beyond heart-breaking to lose Pat so suddenly. So many plans that we had moving forward seem so distant now that he’s gone. We can only hope for the Lord to comfort our hearts and minds as Pat now begins his eternal journey. Thank you, Pat, for being the best husband, father, and grandfather anyone could ask for, and may peace be yours until we all meet again.
