Harold J. Hruska

Harold J. Hruska, age 80, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully at 11:30 p.m., on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at Ennoble Nursing and Rehab.  To honor Harold’s life, private family services were held.  Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.  Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street is assisting the family.

Harold was born on October 13, 1943, in Iowa, the son of William and Loretta (Brincks) Hruska.

Harold graduated from Dubuque Senior High School and went on to proudly served his county with the U.S. Air Force.  He was employed as an elevator operator with Stonehill for 17 ½ years.  Harold married Barbara Heim in 2002, and they were together for 20 years before eventually parting ways.  He was very active with AA, and has been sober for over 37 years.  Harold liked to play Bingo and was a die hard Cubs fan.  He will be missed by his family and friends.

Beverly A. Boeckenstedt

Beverly A. Boeckenstedt, 73, of New Vienna passed away Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at MercyOne Medical Center in Dyersville.

Visitation will be held from 2 – 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville, Iowa.  Visitation will continue Monday morning from 9 – 10 a.m. at Kramer Funeral Home prior to funeral mass.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 7, 2024, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in New Vienna with burial in the church cemetery.  Rev. Philip Agyei will officiate.

Bev was born June 25, 1951, daughter of Elmer and Edna (Klostermann) Tegeler.  Bev graduated from Beckman Catholic High School in 1969.  She married Michael Boeckenstedt on August 29, 1970, in Dyersville and they resided in Dyersville until building a house on their acreage in New Vienna.  Over the years, Bev worked at Ben Franklin, Dyersville Spec-Cast, and Sewing Contractors.  Her most cherished title was mother, grandmother, sister and friend.  Bev loved and cherished her family and was proud of all their accomplishments. She was so excited to hear of Libby’s recent engagement.  She welcomed her two sons-in-law and any significant others as her own children and grandchildren.  She was a generous and kind soul who found joy in helping others.  If cookies or desserts were needed, Bev was sure to be there with something delicious.  Bev enjoyed celebrating all holidays, sending cards to her grandchildren for every holiday and occasion.  She especially loved celebrating Christmas.  She knew just what gifts to give and she made sure that there was plenty of food for all.  She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.  She touched the lives of many with her kindness, generosity and love for family and friends.  We find comfort and peace in knowing that her and Mike are now reunited in heaven.

Clothier of Epworth and Jan (Marty) Schwers of Luxemburg; grandchildren: Libby (fiancé Koner Frandsen), Spencer (Lauren Ryan) and Mitchell (Charley Wulfekuhle) Schwers, Ellie and Olivia Clothier; in-laws: Don (Ruth) Ungs, Richard (Judy) Boeckenstedt and Larry (Darlene) Boeckenstedt and Marilyn Brimeyer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Mike in 2005, a sister, Jane Ungs, in-laws: Lee Boeckenstedt and Melvin Brimeyer.

Richard C. Mockmore Sr.

Richard C. Mockmore Sr. passed away on September 29, 2024, at the age of 68, at his home in Dubuque, Iowa. Born on August 20, 1956, Richard moved to Dubuque in December of 2010 and dedicated these later years of his life to serving his community and caring for his loved ones.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. at Sacred Heart Church, 2215 Windsor Ave., Dubuque, Iowa, with Fr. Steve Garner presiding and Deacon Bill Biver as homilist. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 A.M. to 10:15 A.M. with final committal to follow graveside at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Known for his generosity and humor, Richard often uplifted those around him with kind words and a jovial spirit. He often said to those he sensed were having a bad day: “Has anyone told you that you are loved and appreciated today?” He was deeply committed to his family, notably caring for his mother for many years. He was extremely proud of his son Richard with whom he communicated daily. 

Professionally, Richard held various roles that underscored his dedication to helping others. He managed service or volunteered his time at local men’s shelters and had served as a firefighter in his younger years. He was particularly proud of being certified as a Braille Transcriber by the Library of Congress.

Richard was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Dubuque. He was a frequent participant in the Living Last Supper. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding his actions and commitments.

In past years, Richard enjoyed fishing and golfing. His hobbies not only brought him personal joy but also allowed him to connect with and support others in unique ways. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and service that will be cherished by all who knew him.

Richard is survived by his son, Richard C. Mockmore II of Glenwood, Iowa, and his mother, Shirley A. Baker of Dubuque, Iowa and Fred Brown, a brother in Texas.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church or the Dubuque Rescue Mission, honoring Richard’s life of faith and service. His family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to Cindy Hansen, Richard’s personal caretaker and friend, and the many other medical professionals who served him as well as John Mauss, Tim Duggan, John Waldorf, and Deacon Bill and Sue Biver for their years of guiding Richard on his sometimes difficult journey home to the Lord.

 


 

John Foht

John “Jack” Foht, 95, of East Dubuque, passed away October 1, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Visitation will be from 2:00-6:00 p.m., Friday, October 4, 2024, and from 10:00-11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Road, Dubuque. Funeral Services will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. Full Military Honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Burial will be in East Dubuque Cemetery.

John was born on June 27, 1929, to Henry and Matilda (Sherman) Foht in Mason City, IA.

He served in the United States Army from May 19, 1955-May 1, 1957.

John worked at John Deere for thirty years until retiring in 1997. After retirement, he enjoyed working many miscellaneous jobs around town.

In his free time, John loved woodworking, camping, and could always be found tinkering in the garage. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre.

John never met a stranger. He could strike up a conversation with anyone.

He loved his grandchildren dearly and never missed a special birthday.

John is survived by his children, Julie (Phil) Casper, Janice (Doug) Thornton, Cathy (Kenny) Greene, John (Jeanelle) Foht and Sherry (Glen) Christensen. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jean (Grant) Foht.

John’s family wishes to extend a special thank you to the compassionate nurses at the VA for their excellent care.

A John Foht Memorial Fund has been established.

Richard D. Doelz

Richard D. “Dick” Doelz, 89, of Platteville, Wisconsin, died on Thursday, September 26, 2024.  Dick was born on May 27, 1935, in Platteville, Wisconsin, son of John “Jack” and Ella (Parrish) Doelz.   Dick was united in marriage to Joyce Specht on May 26, 1956, at First English Lutheran Church, Platteville.

Dick grew up farming in Platteville Township. Dick graduated from Platteville High School and served in the Wisconsin National Guard “Red Arrow” from September 14, 1953, to September 13, 1961.  Dick along with his brother-in-law, Cecil Specht, owned and operated Specht & Doelz Garbage Truck, “where it was the only truck with one Specht on it”.  He worked at Udelhoven Garage and from 1971 to 2013 he worked at Faherty’s Inc as a sanitation service driver. While on his routes he was known to carry a treat for the dogs he would encounter.   Dick enjoyed tinkering and working on trucks and cars.  He enjoyed camping, traveling.  Dick was a member of the Southwest Wisconsin Auto Club.

Dick is survived by his wife, Joyce; two sons, David and Daniel (Deb) Doelz; two grandsons, Jeffrey (Jackie) Doelz and their children, Parker, Blake and Jordynn; Jason (Kelly) Doelz and their children, Mary and Connor; brother-in-law, Arkie Specht and his faithful Pomeranian companion, Sandy, that he took on car rides everyday.   Dick was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 AM, Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville.  Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Platteville.  Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM until the time of the service.  Online Condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com

 


 

Karen K. Kennicker

Karen K. Kennicker, 83, of Millville, Iowa passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at her home.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg. Funeral mass will commence at 10:30 a.m. with inurnment to follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Guttenberg. 

Karen was born on January 18, 1941, in Cassville, Wisconsin, the daughter of Glenn and Gladys (Adrian) Orcutt. She graduated from Guttenberg High School in 1959. She was united in marriage to her “fweets” Gerald Kennicker on July 15, 1961, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg, IA.

Karen was a devout farm wife and worked various jobs over the years including dietary manager at the Guttenberg Hospital. Karen also volunteered as a Stephan Minister, auxiliary member at the hospital, and resident advocate at the Guttenberg Care Center. She cared greatly for her family and spent numerous hours with her five grandchildren providing care and entertainment (her favorite was a rousing game of “Old Maid”). She enjoyed growing in her strong Catholic faith, as well as reading books, completing word searches, watching her homestead wildlife, and of course a good snack of popcorn.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Gerald, her two children: Dan (Erlene) Kennicker, Sue (Rob) Andersen; five grandchildren: Willie Kennicker, Andy (Courtney K.&Aiden) Kennicker, Sam (Courtney G.&Weston) Kennicker, Megan Andersen, and Molly (Noah) Andersen; honorary grandchild, Lukas Vogt; sisters-in-law: Mary (Melvin) Barth, Florence Kennicker, Eileen Merfeld, Dorothy Kennicker, and Dorothy Crews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and parents in-law; sister, Glenda (Ray) Reinert; brothers-in-law: Ed, Ray, Lawerence, Leon, Frank, Clarence, and Leroy; sisters in-law: Stella (Joseph) Bertjens, Marita (Sam) Etter, and Teresa (Robert) Hefel.

The family would like to give many thanks to the Guttenberg Hospital, St. Croix Hospice, and all her other care providers.

George L. Anderson

George Lee Anderson, 78, of Scales Mound, IL, passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at the Midwest Senior Care Community in Galena, IL.

Family and friends may call from 9:00 – 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Schapville (rural Scales Mound), where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. James P. Mehltretter officiating.  Burial will be held in Shepherd of the Hills Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by members of VFW Post # 2665 and American Legion Post # 193 of Galena.

George was born on January 27, 1946, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Marvin and Elaine (Dotzel) Anderson. He was a graduate of Scales Mound High School, the class of 1964. George proudly served in the U. S. Army from September of 1966 – March of 1967. He was a member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Schapville.

He married the love of his life Carol North on August 12, 1967, in Seymour, WI. She preceded him in death on November 10, 2016.

George formerly was employed at Kelly-Springfield Tire Company in Freeport, IL, but his passion in life was farming. He will be remembered as a life-long farmer who dedicated his life to working the land and tirelessly tending to his crops and livestock. He was known for his strong work ethic and his generosity in sharing his knowledge with others. His legacy will live on in the fields he tended and the lives he touched. He leaves behind a community grateful for his contributions and a family who will always cherish his memory.

Surviving are his son Carl (Dawn) Anderson; grandchildren, Clint (Ashley) Cyle (Courtney), Darian, Jalen, Taylor and Maddison, Anna, Keira and Kendra; great-grandchildren, Ava, Charley and Abby; two brothers, Larry (Virgie) Anderson and Jim (Kathy) Anderson, a sister, Karen (Tony) Winter; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Elaine, his wife Carol, infant son Dennis and a son Neil.

Dorothy Eisbach

Dorothy Eisbach, 89, of Dubuque, died Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at the Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 10:45 am Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at Holy Spirit Parish – Holy Ghost Catholic Church.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Dorothy will be 11:00 am Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at Holy Spirit Parish – Holy Ghost Catholic Church with Father Steven Garner as the Celebrant. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.

Dorothy was born May 30, 1935, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of George and Carrie (Trentz) Wagner. On August 21, 1954, she married Lee Eisbach on August 21, 1954 at Holy Ghost Church in Dubuque, Iowa. He preceded her in death on February 8, 1988.

Dorothy graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in 1953. She was employed at the Dubuque Packing Company office until she married Lee. After her husband’s death she worked at Medical Associates record room for 22 years retiring on January 8, 2010.

Dorothy lived and loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, she loved spending time with them in whatever it was, sports, pools, walks, games of cards and our many get togethers. She loved traveling to many different states as well as Canada, Niagara Falls, Germany, and Brussels Belgium, where her son and his family were stationed.

Surviving are her children; Leo Eisbach of Redmond, OR; David (Jenny Kress) Eisbach, Diane Eisbach, Kathy (Tom) Noel, and Mary Beth Eisbach all of Dubuque; nine grandchildren, Chris, Jill, Jenny, Levi, Noah, Sebastian, Max, Lainey and Arianna; eight great-grandchildren, Brynn, Evelyn, Will, Olive, Finley, Dexter, Summer, and Odin; two sisters, Mary Ann Theisen and Helen O’Leary; one brother, Walt Wagner; one sister-in-law, Ruth Ann McEnany; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death her parents, six siblings, George (Mary), John (Mary Lou), Tony (Shirley), Joe (Monica), Leo (Alice) Wagner, and Margaret Goerdt-Doerr; and one brother-in-law, Al McEnany.

A great family I had with six brothers and three sisters. A very special thanks to my sister-in-law Ruth Ann, my family for being so good to me throughout my lifetime, for the care that I received in the last of my days from Hospice of Dubuque, and those extra special caregivers Hanna, Cindy, Maddie, and Angie of Assisi Village.

Jerome Schiltz

Jerome (Jerry) Schiltz, passed away on October 1st, 2024, at home surrounded by family. Jerry is proceeded in death by his parents Loretta and Joseph Schiltz, wife of 57 years Patrica Schiltz, sister Elaine Roeth, and son Ricky Schiltz.

Jerry is survived by his brother Roger (Kitty) Schiltz, his children Gary (Donna) Schiltz, Debbie (Dale) Cross, Marsha Schiltz and Sue Brosman. Grand children Krystal (Ryan) Trinkler, Andrew (Fon) Jungers, Tj (Shannon) Schiltz, Matt (Dawn) Cross, Jessica Schiltz, April (Andrew) Orr, Sean (Nicole) Schiltz, Dan (Shelby) Cross, Annie (Kevin) Sauer and 14 great grandchildren with two more expected.

Jerry was born October 4th, 1934, in Dubuque, Iowa. Jerry worked at The Dubuque Packing Company for 29 years. He married the love of his life Patricia Strader in 1956 at Holy Ghost Church in Dubuque Iowa. In 1985 he moved to Jacksonville and as an entrepreneur started Hawkeye Auto Sales. He was known by many as “Hawkeye” and was a successful business owner of Hawkeyes for over 30 years. He will always be remembered for his one liners and witty humor. Jerry was happiest spending time with his family, treating his grand kids to ice cream and fishing on Mille Lacs Lake. Jerry was a devout Catholic and was greeted in Heaven by his lovely wife Pat and beloved son Ricky.

Visitation will be held on what would have been his 90th birthday, October 4th at 2:00 pm at Jones Funeral home. Celebration of life will be held immediately following the visitation at Jones Funeral home at 3:00pm.

In lieu of giving flowers, the family asks instead for donations to the Infant of Prague Catholic Church.

A special thanks to Cardinal hospice, Kathy, Bree, Wanda and her team for their care and compassion for Jerry at the end of his life.

 


 

Philip R. Holsten

Philip R. Holsten, 83, a longtime resident of the Galena area, passed away on September 30, 2024, after a short battle with cancer.

He was born on April 5, 1941, in Hinsdale, IL, the son of Elmer and Catherine Holsten. He started working at Electro-Motive out of high school, then joined the Navy, where he did two tours to the Middle East and was stationed out of Norfolk, VA. When he returned, he continued working at Electro-Motive for 30 + years until he retired.

A trip to the Galena area in the early 70s turned into what would be his final dream home. Phil enjoyed boating and fishing on the Mississippi, a good meal at Catfish Charlie’s and Potosi Brewing, cutting his grass and watching wildlife, going to drag races, watching TV, seeing the Cubs win the pennant, and spending time with his family.  In his final days, Phil re-lived his Navy deployment and was proud to have served his country.

Phil is survived by his sister, Sue (Jerome) Maly of Darien, IL, a nephew, Christopher (Taylor) Maly of Lemont, IL, and a great-nephew, Maddox Maly.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He will be buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Galena, IL.

Thank you to all the healthcare professionals at St. Dominic Villa, Ennoble, and Hospice of Dubuque for caring for Phil. The family would also like to thank the neighbors for their help and kindness. He will be missed.

Jennifer J. Budde

Jennifer Jean Budde, 48, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away peacefully with her family by her side on October 1, 2024.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home with Fr. Jennifer was born on December 8, 1975, in Dubuque, Iowa the daughter of Edward and Jean (Norpel) Michel Sr. She graduated from Bellevue High School, Class of 1994. On May 3rd, 2003, she married Jacob Budde in Dubuque. Jennifer worked at the front desk at the Grand Harbor Hotel. To know her was to love her. She loved her family and friends more than anything. She would give the shirt off her back when needed but could also give attitude when necessary. With her attitude she could be described as wild and crazy. She was always available to help with whatever. She was truly one of a kind, and fought the fight until the very end. She will be dearly missed. No words will ever be able to fully describe the woman that she was.

She is survived by her husband Jacob; her four children: Christopher Nitsos, of Hazel Green, WI, Zachary Koerperich, of Cedar Rapids, Tailey Budde and Aspen Budde both of Dubuque.

Her siblings: Eddie “Rabbit” Michel Jr., Bellevue, Iowa, Rod (Michelle) Michel, of Georgia, Dave (Tami) Michel of Bellevue.  Mother-in-law Chris Olson, and step father-in-law, Marty Beckman. Siblings-in-law: Wayne Beckman and Marcus Beckman.

Nieces and nephews: Sara (Kevin) Kloser, Stephanie (Jesse) Kremer, Maddie Michel, Phil (Ashley) Michel, Matthew (Mallory) Michel, John (Danielle) Michel, Josh Michel, Shane Michel, Austin Michel, Ty Kloser, Logan Kloser, Charlotte Beckman, Griffin Beckman, Ivan Beckman, and Brolin Beckman.

Preceded in death by parents, sister-in-law Kathy Michel, father-in-law John Budde, nephew Trevor Michel and a great nephew Clayton Kremer.

In lieu of flowers a Jennifer Budde memorial fund will be established.

Kevin B. Knepper

Kevin B. Knepper, 64, Farley, Iowa passed away Saturday, September 28, 2024 at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa as a result of an accident while helping his family.

A celebration of life will be held from 3 – 8 p.m. on Friday, October 4, 2024, at Knights of Columbus Hall in Dyersville, Iowa.

Kevin was born December 4, 1959, in Monticello, son of Loras and Mary (Weber) Knepper. Kevin attended grade school at St. Paul’s in Worthington. He graduated from Beckman High School in 1978.  He married his high school sweetheart, Sally Goen, on June 10, 1978, in Dyersville, Iowa.

He began farming on the family farm and while farming, he achieved his associates degree from NITI. He farmed until 1999, but continued the hobby through gardening. He worked with Benke Enterprise for several years. He loved farming and always staying busy, often could be seen cutting the grass at various locations, even on Christmas Eve. He always lended a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He cherished the time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also had a soft spot for his dogs.

Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Sally; children: Max (Molly) Knepper of Peosta, Annan Knepper of Dyersville, Keely (Jesse) Froehner of Virginia Beach; grandchildren: Jack, Brice, Evelyn, Luella, Alaina, Delila, Sylvie, Riley, Elliott; siblings: Bernie (Jane), Don (Kim) both of Dyersville, Dave (Janet) of Barry, IL, Jeff (Diane) of New Vienna, Gary of Streamwood, IL, Beth Knepper of Yellow Springs, OH, Sue (Bob) Willenborg of Dyersville; mother-in-law, Jeanne Goen of Dyersville; in-laws: Bev (Dick) Anstoetter of Farley, Bev Knepper of Dubuque, Sue Goen of Dyersville, Don Goen of Appleton, WI, John (Robin) Goen of Carefree, AZ, Margi (Al) Loeffelholz of Granger, IN, Tim (May) Goen of Thompson Falls, MT, and Martha Boll of Laguna Woods, CA.

Doris M. Pins

Doris M. Pins, 84, of Dyersville, Iowa passed away Sunday, September 29, 2024, at MercyOne in Dubuque, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville, Iowa. Funeral services will follow at 12:30 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, in Dyersville with burial in the church cemetery. Fr. Herbert Pins will officiate, and Deacon Fred Pins will be the homilist.

Doris was born October 16, 1939, daughter of Leonard and Margaret Kramer and grew up in Farley, Iowa. She married Cy Pins on November 16, 1968. After more than 30 years working at KDTH radio station, she finished up her career at Beckman Catholic High School. Her most fulfilling accomplishment was being a Grandma. Doris was a dedicated cheerleader for her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events and activities.

Survivors include her children: Jody (Paul) Heid, Bridget (Michael) Williams, Nicholas (Christina) Pins; grandchildren: Jacob and Olivia Heid, Margaret and Patrick Williams, Aviana and Nico Pins; siblings: Merlin (Lois) Kramer, Sister Margaret Anne Kramer, Marilyn (David) Kluesner; in-laws: Marlene Kramer and Eldora Pins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Margaret Kramer, her husband, Cy; siblings: Ruth (Dallas) Dolphin, Lloyd Kramer; in-laws: Vincent (Clara), Jerome (Ethel), Albert (Esther), James (Eileen), Anthony (Lois), Paul (Lois), Mark (Lorraine), Louis, George (Shirley), Sister Mary Ernest, OSF, Mary (Vince) Goedken, Clara Pins, Therese Pins.

Doris was an avid bowler and charter member of the Beckman Catholic High School Booster Club. The family would like to thank Dr. Andrea Ries and the staff at MercyOne Hospital of Dubuque for their compassionate care.

Judy Weydert

Judy Weydert, 83, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2024. Her family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate her life with visitation on Thursday, October 3, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, located at 2659 John F. Kennedy Rd., Dubuque. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection, 4300 Asbury Rd., Dubuque, with Rev. Phil Gibbs officiating. Judy will be laid to rest at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Key West, IA.

Born on December 26, 1940, at Maquoketa General Hospital, Judy was the beloved daughter of Dorothy (Michel) and Vincent Shanahan. She received her education in the rural schools of Bernard and graduated from Holy Rosary High School in LaMotte, IA. Judy later earned a two-year accounting degree from Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, IA.

Judy’s professional journey began at John Deere Dubuque Works in the Engineering Department. In 1963, she chose to dedicate herself to raising her family but returned to John Deere in 1979, working in various capacities at locations including Waterloo Works, Des Moines Works, PDC in Milan, IL, Deere Credit in West Des Moines, and the Waterloo Engine Works. After 30 years of dedicated service, Judy retired from the John Deere Dubuque Works Finance Division.

Judy was known for her zest for life and her unwavering love for her children and grandchildren. Her warmth and kindness made her a friend to many. She found joy in her faith, reading, walking, singing, dancing, cooking, and sharing meals—especially her favorite, Mexican food.

Judy is survived by her three children: Lori (Jeff) Engel of Cedar Falls; Scott (Claudia) Weydert of Aurora, CO; and Amy Weydert (Anthony Boni) of Colorado Springs, CO. She leaves behind a cherished legacy of grandchildren: Jordan (Melissa) Engel, Abby (Eric) Neill, Taylor (Emily) Engel, Jessica (Chris) Bretzlauf, Nicholas Croci, Kylie Weydert, Reagan Weydert, Bryanna Garcia, Nathaniel Garcia, and Ryan Weydert; as well as four great-grandchildren: Bridget, Ruby, Eloise, and Callum. Judy is also survived by her sisters: Joan Oberfoell of Dubuque, Jane Jarecke of Columbus, NE, Janet Koerner of West Des Moines, and Jeannine Nakashima of San Antonio, TX; along with a very special friend, Jim Steffen, and his family.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and three brothers-in-law: Peter Oberfoell, Larry Jarecke, and Bob Koerner, as well as several aunts and uncles.

Carol J. Edwards

Carol J. (Patterson) Edwards, 82, of Bellevue, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2024, at Methwick Woodlands in Cedar Rapids. 

Funeral Service will be 11:00 am, Saturday, October 5, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church in Bellevue.  Visitation will be 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm, Friday, October 4, 2024, at Hachmann-MierFuneral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue, additional visitation will be 10:00 am – 11:00 am, prior to services on Saturday at the church.  Burial will be at the First Presbyterian Cemetery in Bellevue immediately following the service.

Carol was born June 12, 1942, in Colorado, the daughter of Floyd and Genevieve (Desmarteau) Patterson (Till).  Carol moved to Bellevue in 1945 and resided there until 2016, when she entered Methwick’s Arbor Place/Woodlands for memory care in Cedar Rapids  Carol served as an Elder and taught Sunday School for many years at First Presbyterian Church in Bellevue, was very active in Jaycee’s, and was a charter member of the Ski Bellevue water ski club where she performed atop the first 3-man pyramid and was the first to parasail for the club.  Carol was a seamstress and made many costumes for drama, band, and ski club.  Carol was a first generation, post-secondary graduate of Bayless Business College – Dubuque and worked for the US Coast Guard – Dubuque, upon graduation.  

Following the birth of her second child Carol elected to stay at home and devote her life to raising her kids.  Carol volunteered often in support of the Bellevue Comets Booster Club and attended all home and away games and activities of her two children, which were many.  After her children graduated from high school, she returned to work and held positions as a salesclerk for Armstrong’s Department Store-Dubuque, as a secretary for the University of Dubuque and as an office manager at Jim Schroeder Construction, where she worked for 20 years before retiring.  Because of her love for people and her outgoing personality she also worked part-time as a hostess/assistant manager at Happy Joe’s Pizza and hostess and bartender at Potter’s Mill.  Carol also assisted at Flower Lane Florist during Valentine’s Day for many years.

Carol had many talents but one near and dear to her heart was making candy and baked goods for the Lord’s Acre Auction for the First Presbyterian Church – Bellevue and her locally coveted candy at Christmas, which she gave away as gifts.  She also taught her candy making craft to others through the Northeast Iowa Community College – Peosta, Iowa campus.

Survivors include her children, Terri (Steve) Howes of Fairfax, Iowa, and Steve (Sue) Edwards of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren, Stacey Howes of Denver, Colorado, Luke Howes of San Francisco, CaliforniaHunter (Shanell) Edwards of Shawnee, KansasCole Edwards of Overland Park, Kansas and a great granddaughter, Nora Sue Edwards of Shawnee, Kansas.  She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Jane (Griebel) Patterson and her brother-in-law, Dennis Hal (Monica) Edwards and nieces, Justine (Patterson) Flanagan of Imperial, Missouri, Katie Edwards of Farmington, Minnesota, Kelly (Sheldon) Ehliof Fargo, North Dakota, and Krysten (Derek Hughes) Edwardsof Eagan, Minnesota, and nephew Jeff (Meagan) Patterson of Ankeny, Iowa.  She is also survived by 6 great nephews, Ian Flanagan, Alex EhliWill Ehli, Jonah Hughes, Elliot Hughes, Wesley Hughes and two great niecesEmily (Eric) Kallbrier and Olivia Ehli.

Carol was preceded in death by her parentsFloyd and Genevieve Patterson and brother, Samuel Patterson and her ex-husband, Forrest Edwards, for whom she was married to for more than 20 years

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being set up in her honor with the Alzheimer’s Association for Alzheimer’s and Dementia Research.
