Frances A. Heilman

Frances Adelia (McGill) Heilman, beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and aunt, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 23, 2024. A sometimes devout Catholic, Frances incorporated what she considered to be the very best aspects of various faiths to create a relationship with God that was uniquely her own— “Catholic-lite,” she called it.  She firmly believed that this world was only one “village” and that in leaving us she was simply moving on to the next one.

Frances lived a life marked by her feisty arguments with the Lord, boundless love, and a deep commitment to her family.  Her nurturing spirit extended to her treasured cats, Eek and Cherry, who brought her joy and companionship.  An avid reader, Frances devoured books of all kinds and became one of the most intelligent conversationalists you’d ever want to meet.  Her curiosity was boundless, and she loved sharing the solace and inspiration she found in the pages of her many books with others.

Frances believed strongly in personal freedom tempered by responsibility, and in holding people in authority accountable.  She raised her children to do the same, but may have regretted that when she was the authority in question.

Frances is survived by her husband, a sister and brother, her children, her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a host of other family members and friends who will remember her for her wisdom, independence, and loyalty.  She was a beautiful soul who will be missed beyond words.  We all hope her next village has plenty of strong coffee, lots of chocolate, lemon drops, crispy bacon, oranges, kitty cats, and all the books that have ever been or will be written.  We love you, Mom.

A celebration of her extraordinary life will be planned for some time next year.  In place of flowers, we request that you honor her by donating to the Dubuque County Library – Asbury Branch, your local library, the Humane Society, or St. Vincent de Paul.

Susan M. Goldsmith

Susan Marie (Fleming) Goldsmith, 61, of Dyersville, passed away early on August 21, 2024, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque, after a six-year journey with breast cancer that had metastasized to her brain, skin, and several bones.

Visitation will be held from 3 – 7 p.m. Monday, August 26, 2024 at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville. Visitation will continue at the funeral home from 9 – 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 27, 2024 prior to the Mass of Christian Burial.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, celebrated by Sue’s brother, Fr. David Fleming, with Fr. Michael McAndrew and Fr. Chris Podhajsky co-celebrating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery at a later date.

Sue was born on October 9, 1962, to Robert and Mary Ann Fleming, in Des Moines. She graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in 1981. Sue earned a B.A. in Education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1986, and M.A. in Education from Viterbo University in 2008.

Sue met her husband, Thomas Goldsmith, when she was a bridesmaid for his sister, Sue Miles. Despite his puka shell necklace, Sue “just knew” before the end of that weekend they would get married.  They married one year later on July 12, 1986, at Visitation Catholic Church in Des Moines.

Tom and Sue were blessed with two children—Ian, in 1989, and Hannah, in 1994—who were Sue’s greatest joys.  She also had a heart full of love for her granddaughter, Josephine Susan Goldsmith.

She loved being a teacher and taught at St. Joseph in Key West, St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville and Maquoketa Valley CSD in Delhi, Earlville, and Hopkinton. Before retiring in 2020, Sue spent 23 years at M.V., first as an associate, then Talented and Gifted instructor, and most recently, a fifth-grade teacher. M.V. was her “school family.”

Although she loved being in the classroom with her students and sharing a laugh with friends, Sue considered herself an introvert, often joking, “I’m one step away from being a hermit.” She most enjoyed spending time together with her family, sharing laughs and playing games.  Sue also valued having quiet time to read, having a hard time putting down a book once she began it, often finishing it in one sitting.

Sue is survived by her husband, Tom; children, Ian (and Jackie) Goldsmith of Atlanta, Ga. and Hannah (and Kevin) Goldmink of Cuba City, WI; her granddaughter Josephine,; mother, Mary Ann Fleming of Ankeny; siblings: Joe (Therese) Fleming of San Diego, Cal., Rev. David Fleming of Des Moines and Karen Fleming (Dave Richards) of Des Moines; in-laws: Cheryl (Gary) Gates of Hopkinton, Jeff (Pam) Goldsmith of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Bruce (Amy) Goldsmith of Earlville, Andy ‘Grover’ (Ellen) Goldsmith of Delhi, Sue (Joel) Miles of Hopkinton and Gary (Lana) Goldsmith of Iowa City; aunts and uncles: Linus ‘Butch’ Flick, Alice ‘Tudy’ Lockwood and Doyle DeVoe; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her dad, Bob; parents-in-law, Leo ‘Duff’ and Doris Goldsmith; nephew, Austin Goldsmith; grandparents, Marvin and Alma Fleming and Cletus and Laura Flick; aunts and uncles: Leota DeVoe, Joan and Vernal Thompson, Donald and Phyllis Flick, Madonna Flick and Donald Lockwood.

The family would like to thank all the staff at MercyOne Dubuque Cancer Center, especially Dr. Eric Engelman, the oncology nurses and staff and the Palliative Care team of Diane Rambousek and Kelly Skrivseth, for their compassionate care. Thanks also go to Hospice of Dubuque and the entire staff at Stonehill Care Center for their excellent care in the final life stage.  Special thanks goes to Kris Wilson, Sue Miles and Cheryl Gates for their exemplary “chauffeur services” to Sue’s many appointments; to Sue’s ‘Girlfriend Group” of Lynne Moser, Diane Sperfslage, Nancy Schlueter, Sandy Jaeger, Cathy Juran, Lisa Goedken, Sarah Goedken and Kate Lueken, who made sure Sue got out of her bubble and had lots of fun; and to everyone who visited, called, sent cards and lifted Sue up through prayer during her six-year journey.

In lieu of flowers or memorial items, Sue expressed her wish for donations to Maquoketa Valley Dollars for Scholars or St. Francis Xavier School Scholarship Fund.

Douglas A. Mangler

Douglas A. “Doug” Mangler, age 70, of Wyoming, IA, completed his earthly journey suddenly on August 17, 2024, at home.  To honor Doug’s life, a private family service will be held at a later date.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Doug’s family.

Doug was born on May 25, 1954, in Manchester, IA, a son to Eldon W. and Wanda C (Tilp) Mangler.  He was a good and decent man through and through and for those who knew him well, they are also fully aware that he could be a bit of a spit-fire when the situation required such a response.  In his younger year, Doug’s affinity for spending time with family and friends while tinkering on his latest vehicles became quite obvious.  As children, he and his brother, Dennis spent countless hours tuning and upgrading their go-kart until they had the perfect machine at the ready.  Doug carried this love for fixing up his Harleys and cars throughout his entire life and many projects were completed due to his determination, skills, and knowledge.

Doug was a truck driver by trade and faithfully devoted many years of his career with the Dodge Trucking Company in Wyoming, IA.  He always enjoyed putting a few miles under his belt and never regretted making a few good friends along the way as well.  In his free-time, you could easily find Doug showing off his talents around the pool table, or spending a little quality time with his favorite canine companion, Roxy.  Doug did his best not to take life too seriously, nor himself for that matter, and those around him truly benefited from his kind and generous spirit in more ways than we could count.  We will miss Doug moving forward, and life will not be the same without his physical presence walking among us.  Thank you, Doug, for reminding us that life is a journey to be walked on each path as we see fit and may this mode of operation also be present in our lives whenever possible.  We are grateful for the time that we had and the memories which remain and only pray that Doug is free now from his earthly health battles and resting in the loving arms of the Lord until we all meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Doug include,
his children,
Sarah (fiancé Brian Yeo) McNamara, Dubuque, IA,
Drew Mangler, Savanna, IL,
Parker Mangler, Dubuque, IA,
and step daughter Bailey (Ryan) Kloft, Bellevue, IA;

his grandchildren,
Mason Schlecht, Adalynn Yeo, Croix Yeo, and Pruitt Yeo;

his brother,
David (Michael) Mangler, Lewes, Delaware;

his ex-wife and special friends,
Kelly (Will) Connor, Savanna, IL;

along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Mary E. Althaus

Mary Elizabeth (Ludescher) Althaus, 73, of Bellevue, passed away on Friday, August 16, 2024 at the University of Iowa hospitals and Clinics. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 20th from 3 – 7 p.m. at the Egelhof, Siegert, and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road.  Funeral mass will be held Wednesday, August 21st at 10:30 a.m. at St. Donatus Church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Click here to view the Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Althaus.

Mary was born on September 27, 1950 in Dubuque, daughter of John and Ruth (Peters) Ludescher.  She graduated from Wahlert High School and attended Clarke College.  She worked for the Iowa State Liquor Commission, Family Beer & Liquor, and she and her husband, Harry, opened Alt’s Mini Storage.

Mary was an animal whisperer her entire life, raising beloved dogs, taming feral cats lucky enough to find her, and keeping bird feeders filled with special seed for backyard songbirds.  She was a nature lover at heart.

In 1992, Mary married the love of her life, Harry. The two were the true definition of opposites attract and were a perfect couple. Together they collected a wonderful group of friends and family, and were a welcome addition at gatherings. The two spearheaded special events like the grand Easter egg hunt/kegger enjoyed by dozens of friends, family and coworkers. Mary painstakingly stuffed hundreds of plastic eggs with coins and Betty Jane candy, and kids would spill into the yard on Gardners Lane, to fill their baskets and enjoy the company of everyone who gathered. Mary was a memory maker.

Mary was notoriously frugal yet quietly generous to family, friends, and causes dear to her. She was an active volunteer and board member for Dubuque Sertoma Club, Albrecht Acres, and Holy Ghost/St. Donatus parishes. Until the very end of her life, she was genuinely interested in the lives of others. She was a keen listener and friend to all.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Harry, and step-daughter Mikayla (Matthew) Slimmer; her brother, John “Jack” (Barb) Ludescher, and by her nephews and nieces:  Mark (Vonnie) Ludescher; Chris (Heidi) Ludescher; Tom Ludescher (Sandy); Susan (Steve) LeFevre; and also many great and great great nieces and nephews; in-laws DiAnn (Terry) Rooney, Dennis (Jean Ann) Althaus, Roger (Sharon) Althaus, Linda Weretka, Rick (Pat) Althaus, Kevin (Joanie) Althaus, and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Jimmy, a sister-in-law Judi Bartel, brother-in-law Herb Althaus Jr, mother & father-in-law Herb Sr. & LeVon Althaus.

The family gives special thanks to the caring staff at Mercy Hospital 3W and ICU at University of Iowa Hospital.

A memorial fund has been established to benefit Mary‘s favorite charities:  Camp Albrecht Acres, Stonehill Communities, & St. Donatus Church.

Korey L. Nadermann

Korey Lee Nadermann, 47, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on August 18th, 2024 at UnityPoint Health, Finley Hospital, surrounded by his loving family after a brief battle with cancer.

Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 25th, 2024 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 26th, 2024 at the funeral home. A live stream of the funeral service will be on the funeral home Facebook page.  Please feel welcome to wear your favorite Marvel/DC, Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Bears or wrestling (WWE, ACW etc.) shirts on either day.

Korey was born on December 1, 1976, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Gary and Debra (Kelleher) Nadermann.

He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Grade School and Wahlert Catholic High School, graduating in 1995.  He was a friend to everyone and part of many friend groups all throughout school.  He loved talking about and driving through his “stomping grounds” near Burden Park.

He married his love, Jennifer Barry, on May 4th, 2002 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dubuque and he was her biggest cheerleader.

Korey previously worked for the Dubuque Greyhound Park and Casino as well as Advanced Data Com/WS Live/Humach where he met many people he continued to call good friends over the years.

He had a deep love of animals of all kinds and was most recently employed at the Dubuque Regional Humane Society.  He was always on the lookout for anyone he could encourage to come meet the animals available for adoption.  If you didn’t know Korey personally, you may know him as the dog walker in downtown Dubuque.  Many thought he was providing a service, but he was actually just walking his and Jenny’s own dogs wherever they would take him.

He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Bears fan and watching the Cubs win the World Series was a cherished memory that he spoke about often.

Korey was a huge fan of graphic novels, movies of all kinds, especially horror and superhero movies, and professional wrestling.  He recently was very proud and excited to be an extra in a short film his niece Kloie asked him to be a part of.  It snowed terribly the day of filming but there was no way he was going to miss his big break.

A kid at heart, “Uncle Korkey” adored spending time with his nieces and nephews.  He was an expert claw machine operator and won many toys and trinkets over the years to share with the kids.  He may also have been known to have a stash of candy under his bed that pieces were stolen from.  He praised wins and listened to struggles and was always ready to share how proud he was of each of them.

Korey had a razor sharp, lightning quick sense of humor, earning him the nickname “Time Bomb” in school.  He also had a huge kind heart and a sweet soul like none other.

Korey was king of the “midwest goodbye” but he was taken from us much, much too soon.

Korey is survived by his wife Jennifer and their dog Ruby, mother and father Gary and Debra, sisters Kelly (Morgan) Eitter and Keri Breed; mother and father-in-law, Dennis and Mary Anne Barry, sister-in-law Kathryn Ties and brother-in-law James Barry, and former brother-in-law Miles Breed; nieces and nephews Kolton Nadermann, Briehlyn Nadermann, Madlin Nadermann (Teo Razic), Lt. Keegan Eitter, Kloie Eitter, Gavin Breed and Cooper Ties, great-nieces and nephew Leo, Mila, Veda and Nadalia.  He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his Grandparents Leo and Dorothy Nadermann and James and Helen Kelleher; Uncles Steven Nadermann, Richard Finn and Ronald Streif, brother-in-law Brian Ties, and “his boys” Jack, Buddy, Al and Abe.

The family wishes to thank the staff and medical teams at UnityPoint, Grand River Medical Group and Dubuque Fire Department and EMS for their support, care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, a Korey L. Nadermann memorial fund will be established.  Contributions can also be made to the Dubuque Regional Humane Society toward the adoption fee of an animal.

“We are reminded how short life really is, and how we are just passing through. So, all the people you haven’t told you love lately, tell them, and live your days like you mean it.” – Hal Sutton

Mary Jane Anthony

Mary Jane (Janie) Anthony, 93, of Holy Cross, died on Sunday, August 18 at Mercy One Senior Care in Dyersville Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024 at Kramer Funeral Home in Holy Cross.  Visitation will continue at the funeral home from 9-10 a.m. prior to funeral mass.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery.  Rev. Tyler Raymond will officiate.

Mary Jane was born on February 25, 1931, to Peter and Catherine (Meyer) Gotto of Bankston. On November 8, 1958, Mary Jane (Gotto) married James Anthony at St. Clements Catholic Church in Bankston. They farmed together for 31 years and raised a family in Holy Cross before Jim passed away in 1990. Janie then continued to farm with her three sons until retirement. You could find her doing chores, cooking, baking, or just having a long talk with friends or family. If you stopped by the farm or were over for a holiday, you never went away hungry or without a good cup of coffee.  If you were out to lunch with her, you’d probably see her enjoying her favorite banana or coconut cream pie because it was always just fine to have dessert first. Janie also had a love of God, and her rosary was never far out of reach. She enjoyed endless conversations with family and friends along with shopping excursions where she may have purchased another polka dot shirt or fuzzy booties. And, during the good ‘ole days with her parents Pete and Kate in Bankston – endless Sundays were spent on the front porch visiting, cooking up an old-fashioned meal, or playing a good game of cards.

Janie is survived by her three sons, Rick, Randy and Dave all of Holy Cross, her two daughters, Debra (husband David Young) of Katy, Texas and Peg (fiancé Korey Kahl) of Mazomanie, Wisconsin. She is further survived by brother Ralph (Nancy) of Minnesota, in-laws: Geri Anthony, Carol Anthony, Jane Anthony, numerous nieces & nephews, and extended family.

Janie was preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents, along with two brothers Leon (Grace) Gotto and Cletus (Rosella) Gotto, in-laws: Mel Anthony, Herb Anthony, Bill Anthony, Jack (Doris) Anthony, Charlie Anthony, Merlin Anthony, and Doris (Walter) Pitz.

Her children know that heaven gained an angel, but she was already that on earth. Today, there’s the sweet smell of apple pie floating in heaven and coffee brewing, and a home cooked meal being shared with family and friends that have gone before her.  The cards are being dealt for a game of horse deal or euchre, there’s chatter in the air, and heaven is a whole lot brighter because of Janie and her sweet soul. And, after a long 34 years, Jim and Janie are finally reunited. Until we meet again Mom, watch over us.

Thank you to the caregivers at Mercy One Senior Care for taking such wonderful care of Janie. Your dedication to your profession is priceless.

Kramer Funeral Home in Holy Cross is assisting the family and information is available at www.kramerfuneral.com.  Memorials may be sent to the family, (in care of Kramer Funeral Home) 750 12th Ave SW, Dyersville, IA  52040.
