Lyle C. Pershing

Lyle C. Pershing, 92, of Kaufman, Texas, and formerly of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Friday, November 15, 2024, at home.  He was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother.

Lyle was born on November 1, 1932, in Littleton, Illinois, to Charles Franklin and Irma (Ussery) Pershing.  His elementary education began in the one room Flat Iron School, then one year in Moline and then to Preston, Iowa where he graduated in 1952. His commitment to his country was evident through his service in the U.S. Navy from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1957. After serving, Lyle furthered his education at L.A. Trade Technical Junior College, earning an associate’s degree in Industrial Electronics.

On August 29, 1956, he married the love of his life, Lorraine Eileen Roebke, in South Gate, California. Their loving partnership was blessed with four wonderful children: Lorrie, Lyle “Chuck,” Lisa, and Layne. Lyle’s devotion to his family was the cornerstone of his life, and he instilled in his children the values of hard work, education, and the importance of family.

Lyle worked on ICBM Missiles in Research, Development, and Installation in Denver, Omaha, Lincoln, Kansas, and Seattle. He then worked for Warheads and Guidance Systems in Rapid City, South Dakota. 1963 brought the family to Iowa, where Lyle worked for Clinton Engines a short time, and the farm east of Maquoketa where they had a dairy operation for 20 years. He then worked for Swiss Valley Farms for 10 years retiring in 1995.

A man of the land, Lyle’s deep connection to the soil and the seasons was a testament to his character and his love for the agricultural community. He was actively involved, serving as a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Charlotte, a former 4-H Leader, and a member of the Jackson County Extension Council and Youth Committee. Lyle was also an honorary member of the Maquoketa FFA, a former member of the Dairy Promotion Association, and the USS Black Association.

Lyle’s interests were as varied as they were passionate. He was a talented woodcarver and an accomplished builder of furniture, creating hundreds of pieces from trees felled and sawn on his farm. His works in walnut, cherry, maple, oak, and hackberry were not just furniture but pieces of art that will be cherished for generations. Lyle also found joy in the great outdoors, whether it was turkey hunting, fishing, or simply enjoying the company of his morning coffee group. His love for crypto quotes kept his mind sharp, and his travels with Lorraine brought them countless memories to treasure.

Lyle’s legacy is carried on by his beloved wife, Lorraine Pershing of Kaufman, TX; his children, Lorrie (George) Chismark of Maquoketa, IA, Lyle “Chuck” Pershing of Maquoketa, IA, Lisa (Dan) Eggers of Kaufman, TX, and Layne (Julie) Pershing of Preston, IA. Connie was born on November 16, 1971, in Monticello, Iowa, daughter of Robert W. and Mary E. “Betty” (McCarthy) Trumm.  She received her education at Aquin Elementary in Cascade and is a 1992 graduate of Western Dubuque High School in Epworth, Iowa.

Connie was born with Turners syndrome, and anyone who was fortunate enough to meet her knew that she would never hide behind any disability.  Her sincerity and wit drew many people over the years to search for her, approach her, and enjoy an exchange with her.  She would refer to the lucky ones as her friends.

After graduating high school Connie volunteered her time at Aquin preschool and daycare for at least 15 years.  She enjoyed recognizing her former preschoolers when they showed up in the paper during their high school years or as they became married or even parents.  Connie had special abilities with babies and small children and could calm the rowdiest ones.  She lived for and loved to interact with her own nieces and nephews.  And maintained a close bond with them as they grew to adulthood.  She was especially fond of her two God children, Britney Noreen and David Trumm.

Connie knew all her cousins and kept track of their kids, often remembering their birth dates and who was winning by having the most grandkids.  She had a special fondness for the gentlest animals like bunnies, butterflies and kittens.  But her favorite of all of these was the beagle puppy.  For nearly 20 years Connie maintained a family of beagles and sold litters of puppies.  Later she would boast about having probably the largest collection of snoopy stuffed dogs and filled her bed with them leaving just enough room for herself at bedtime.

Connie was admired for her simple faith that she had in Jesus and her devotion to the Blessed Virgin.  Connie was a member of the Dubuque County Right to Life and supported St. Peter’s Temple Hill, most recently contributing to the church renovation project.  Connie will forever be missed by those who knew her.

Connie is survived by her five older siblings, Judy (Larry) Hayes of Peosta, Donna (Garry) Kennedy of Palatine, IL, Ann (Kipp) Noreen of West Dundee, IL,. Lois (Dan) Hayes of St. Donatus, and Joe (Sara) Trumm of Cascade; her 18 nieces and nephews, Molly (Justin) Bahl, Emily (Nick) Schmerbach, Ryan Kennedy, Matthew Kennedy, Brittaney (Chris) Jensen, Alexander (Abi) Noreen, Todd (Nadine) Noreen, Tyler (Andrea) Hayes, Mallory (Kody) Jones, and Abigail (Kris) Howes, Robert (Jordan) Trumm, Philip (Ella) Trumm, Carolyn (friend, Jake Westhoff) Trumm, David (Emma) Trumm, Becky (Jacob) Bonert, Emily, Annie, and Katelyn Trumm; 16 great niece and nephews with three on the way; aunts and uncles, George Knepper, Ida Trumm and Lois Manternach.

She is also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Margie Trumm; one niece, Natalie Hayes; grandparents, John & Elizabeth (Pottebaum) Trumm and Joseph and Agnes (Otting) McCarthy; and aunts and uncles, Robert and Jerry McCarthy, Mary (Fred) Reiter, John E. Trumm, LeRoy (Mary Clare) (Rosene) Trumm, Millie (Ed) Hosch, Alma Knepper, Dorothy (Larry) Yanda and Lloyd Manternach.

The family expresses heartfelt appreciation to Rev. Mark Osterhaus, and all the loving caregivers that provided their services to Connie for the past several years.
