James Cosley

James “Jim” Cosley, 95, gained his angel wings on May 28, 2024, at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque. After a long and blessed life, he was fortunate to have a beautiful last few days on earth, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He wouldn’t have wanted it any other way, though he would have never admitted it, and yet he certainly deserved no less.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 am until 10:15 am on Friday, May 31, 2024 at St. Anthony Catholic Church.

The Mass of Christian Burial for James will be 10:30 am Friday, May 31, 2024, at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Father Steven Rosonke as the Celebrant. Entombment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.  Full military honors will be rendered by American Legion Post #6 and the Iowa Army National Guard.

Jim was born on March 11, 1929, in Dubuque, Iowa, the only child of Harold and Viola Cosley. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School, class of 1947. He married Marian T. Kirchberg on September 4, 1950 at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Together they were lifelong parishioners of St. Anthony Church in Dubuque, Iowa. After 66 years of a wonderful marriage, she preceded him in death on November 30, 2016. Jim had very much been looking forward to being reunited with Marian everyday since.

Jim served in the 34th Division, 133rd Infantry Regiment, Headquarters Company of the Iowa National Guard. He was a Master Sergeant and a Platoon Leader. He was also a member of the American Legion Dubuque Post 6.

Jim was a Real Estate Broker for 46 years in Dubuque. He was a member of the Dubuque Board of Realtors, the Iowa Association of Realtors, and the National Association of Realtors. Jim was the President of the Dubuque Board of Realtors in 1973. He was the Vice President of Carris Construction Company for several years in the late 1950’s through the 1960s. He supervised home construction projects for several years and had a great knowledge of the home construction industry in Dubuque. He was proud to be a charter member of the Student Built Home Project sponsored by the Dubuque Board of Realtors. Jim also served 35 years on the Eminent Domain Commission of the Dubuque County Supervisors.

In his leisure time, Jim was a member of the Mississippi Walleye Club of Dubuque. He loved to hunt, fish, read, and travel. He enjoyed annual trips to Spooner, WI to fish the area lakes with his family. Jim also made several fishing trips to Sioux Lookout, Ontario, Canada to fish the lakes for walleye and trout.

Jim loved life, had a zest for it, and was so very good at it! He was the perfect blend of humility and confidence. His personality was contagious. Even at 95, his humor was spot on. When recently asked by a nurse what year his birthday was, he responded, without missing a beat, “every year!” Throughout his lifetime, he had his hands in a number of things, but mostly identified as a realtor, running Cosley Reality for a number of years. Realty was a great way for him to get to know and meet people. People were his passion – and perhaps his biggest gift. He made friends wherever he went. He had natural charisma and charm that made every situation better. Jim will be missed by many, but his family is so proud of him. He fought the good fight, he finished the race, and he kept the faith.

Jim’s Catholic faith and his family were the most important things in his life. He was very dedicated and devout. In addition to attending mass regularly, he recited thousands of rosaries and chaplets for those he loved throughout his lifetime, and passed with his beloved rosary in his hands.

In addition to his wife, Marian, he was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Viola Cosley , his son David Cosley (January 8, 2024), and his in-laws George, Amelia, Lorraine, and George Jr. Kirchberg.

Survivors include his children: Daughter-in-law Patricia Cosley of Dubuque; Dennis (Mary) Cosley of Dubuque; Janet (Bob) Smith of Fairfax, IA, Bill Cosley of Atkins, IA, and Joan (Bruce Mundschenk) Cosley of Dubuque. Grandchildren: Lysa Cosley of Dubuque; Lynda (Scott) Bohlmann of Cedar Falls, IA, Tom (June) Cosley of Guttenberg, IA, Daniel (Nakaba) Cosley of Kenmore, WA, Sarah Cosley of Prescott, AZ, Justin Smith of North Liberty, IA, Stephanie (Travis) Tranel of Cuba City, WI, and Ali (Justin) Bandy of Dubuque. Great Grandkids: Ella and Almerik Bohlmann of Cedar Falls, IA, Eli, Will, Leah, and Claire Cosley of Guttenberg, IA, Shion Cosley of Kenmore, WA, Evelyn, Violet, Ossie, Meadow and Quinn Tranel of Cuba City, WI, Connor, Willow, and Adeline Bandy of Dubuque.

The family would like to offer their sincere thanks and appreciation to Hospice of Dubuque and Stonehill Care Center. Jim spent the last 3.5 years of his life at Stonehill. Like a lot of people, he had no interest in being in a nursing home. However, as the months turned to years, Stonehill became his home and the staff and residents became like family. The care they provided and the friendship they offered will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Anthony Parish or Stonehill.

Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Crematory is in care of the arrangements.

Condolences can be sent to the family by visiting James’s obituary at www.hskfhcares.com.

Judi Palmer

Judi Palmer, 80, of Dubuque, died Monday, May 27, 2024, at the Luther Manor in Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 10:45 am on Friday, May 31, 2024 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Funeral Service for Judi will be at 11:00 am on Friday, May 31, 2024, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

Judi was born December 8, 1943, in Des Moines, the daughter of Sidney and Lois (Paulson) Palmer. In 1967, she married Gari McDermott, they later divorced.

Judi was a very artistic person, she played the drums, was a dance instructor, and enjoyed singing. She also enjoyed knitting and crafting. Judith also loved animals, especially seeing the penguins at the zoo.

Survivors include her five children, Beth McDermott of Chicago, IL; Jeff McDermott of Dubuque; Russ McDermott of Dickeyville; Shawn McDermott of Dubuque; and Daniel K. McDermott of St. Paul, MN; two grandchildren, Garrett R. McDermott and Calla Mae McDermott.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Roland and Jon Palmer.

Now, let’s tell you a story about our Mom… You won’t believe it, I don’t even believe 1/2 of it and I’ve seen the pictures. Her early adult life sounds like something out of a Hollywood biopic: Judi was a beatnik playing jazz clubs in New York, then a showgirl performing in a chorus line (not the show, but what the show was about) alongside a young Barbara Streisand. At some point she was performing in Vegas, dating a notorious mobster, and regularly hanging out with Sammy Davis Jr, and Joey Bishop. She knew Ray Charles, Michael Landon, and yes, she shook Frank Sinatra’s hand. Then one night while rehearsing a big production number, tragedy struck when she fell off a ladder and broke her back. She spent 2 years in traction followed by many years of rehabilitation.

Along the way she met my Dad, got married, had 5 kids, and made a home in Alta, IA. Mom was a dedicated homemaker and a doting parent, but she had too much talent to hold inside! So first in the living room, then in a storage room behind the local salon, and ultimately in a place all her own, she owned and operated a premiere dance studio with a reputation for excellence and a host of students that stretched from the MN border to Sioux City, IA.

Sadly, Mom’s later life is filled with bad decisions and devastating consequences, and by age 70 she had developed serious respiratory issues and dementia. She could no longer provide for herself, so she lived the last several years comfortable and well cared for at Luther Manor in Dubuque.

She’s been many things to many people: dancer, musician, showgirl, teacher, entrepreneur, wife, mother, friend, confidante, lover, and always a fighter, but to me she was just “Mom”, and she was my hero… The last time I saw her, in a fleeting moment of lucidity, she suddenly recognized me, told me she loved me, and said she could feel her time was coming soon. I said I love her too, told her how proud I am of her for living life on her own terms, and let her know it’s ok to rest now.

She passed away peacefully at 2:19AM on May 27, 2024… Memorial Day, of course.

May the Lord bless her and keep her. May the Lord make their face shine upon her and be gracious to her. And may the Lord lift up Their countenance upon her and give her peace.

Goodnight Mom, flights of angels sing the to thy rest… We’ll see you on the other side ♥️

Fabian F. Barry

Fabian F. Barry, age 59, of Dubuque, IA, was greeted by his heavenly family on May 25, 2024. He passed peacefully at home while surrounded by loved ones.  To honor Fabian’s life, a Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held at Paul’s Tap following burial at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Fabian’s family.

Fabian was born on July 17, 1964, in Bellevue, IA, a son to Donald J. and Elizabeth “Betty” (Burns) Barry. As one of the youngest of ten siblings, his early years were shaped by the lively challenge of keeping up with his older brothers and sisters. Fabian spent his life giving more of his time, talents, and energy to his family and friends than he would ever consider taking. He honorably served his county with the Iowa National Guard and the U.S. Army, while devoting his working career in the construction trades.  Fabian worked on countless projects around the area with the Iowa Labor Union and also spent many years working with friends at Bries Construction, Custom Concrete, and Tschiggfrie Excavating Co. He made work entertaining and memorable for all those on the crew and was respected for his exceptional construction skills. Fabian could build, fix, and create anything and took pride in doing quality work.

In his free-time, Fabian found many delights in life. An avid collector of Budweiser memorabilia was only the beginning. A perfect day for Fabian was riding his Harley under a sunny sky, followed by an evening around the pool table. He never passed up the opportunity to go fishing or grill food for family and friends. But, for those who knew and loved Fabian most, his family and friends were always top priority in his life. Enjoying the day with his grandchildren, visiting his siblings, or gathering with others at Paul’s Tap or Georgie’s Skyline was where he felt most at ease.

As we look to the difficult days ahead, we find comfort remembering Fabian’s heart of gold and ironic, witty sense of humor that will continue to resonate throughout the lives of those who knew and loved him.  His family and friends will miss him dearly. We are especially thankful there are innumerable joyful memories for us to lean into during this time of heartache. Thank you, Fabian, for simply being you. You are a legend to our family and to all those who had the honor of knowing your caring and loving heart. May the Lord bless and keep you until we meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Fabian include:

his two children,
Christian M. Barry, Neponset, IL,
and Delila J. Barry, Dubuque, IA;

his three grandchildren,
Reighan L. Barry, Ryker M. Barry, and Rick J. Barry;

George W. Bookless Jr.

George W. Bookless, Jr., 81, a long-time resident of Galena, Illinois, passed away on May 24, 2024, after suffering from congestive heart failure and its complications. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family. George was born in Terre Haute, IN, on October 12, 1942.

He grew up in Franklin Park, IL, where his parents moved after World War II. His father served in an Army Air Force photographic unit, so George always had a darkroom to fool around in as a boy. He graduated from Knox College with a BA in English and a Minor in Biology. Not decided on a career, a college classmate suggested he speak to Sargeant Shriver about the Peace Corps, and so off he went in 1965 for an assignment in Nigeria, where a civil war began shortly after his arrival, making him witness horrible suffering and atrocities. He served as Senior Education Officer attached to the Schools Broadcasting Unit of the Ministry of Education. In addition to writing and directing television science programs, he became head of the photographic unit and, in his spare time, traveled with the only Peace Corps doctor, helping to dispense medicine and aid to the surrounding villages. He learned to speak Hausa and contracted dengue fever and malaria during his almost 3-year stint and returned to the US in 1968, after receiving his draft notice, weighing only 87 pounds. He taught school briefly, then worked as a producer for Coronet Films in Chicago.

He married Lynn Giles in 1970, who blessed him with two loving children, William and Jennifer. While on assignment photographing eagles, he fell in love with Galena and moved his young family here, where both children were raised, and started a freelance photography business.

On September 19, 1998, he married Kathy Puszczewicz in a ceremony on the front porch of their home on Wight Street in front of many relatives and friends. George served as Alderman at Large for the City of Galena from 2001-2005, where he was instrumental in the downtown reconstruction project; funding, relocation, and construction of the new wastewater treatment plant; development of the bike trail; planning and funding for the renovation of Recreation Park and the swimming pool; and advocating for the relocation of City Hall and the city garage. He also supported Wal Mart coming to Galena but with conditions requiring they meet the city’s terms, not their terms, which they ultimately did.

During his life, George enjoyed camping, fishing, canoeing, hiking, gardening, cooking, sharing stories, and listening to the radio. He loved sitting on the front porch of his home on Wight Street, drinking a beer and smoking cigarettes. When asked what he would like done with his ashes, he half-jokingly said he wanted his brother, John, to shoot them out of a canon and into the sky. So, whenever you hear the cannon boom in Grant Park on July 4 and other occasions……. think of George.

George is survived by the best thing that ever happened to him: his loving wife, Kathy; daughter Jennifer (Jay) Stienstra and son William (Susan) Bookless; grandchildren Alexander and Anika Kerkhoven, Billy, and Betty Bookless; sister Joan (Jack) Juhlin; brothers John Bookless and William (Stacy) Bookless; Denmark sister Britha (Jan) Mikkelson; mother-law, Eleanor Puszczewicz; in-laws Linda (Dennis) Fillippo, David Puszczewicz and Al Bonvini, Michael (Dawn) Puszczewicz; Lynn Giles; and many nieces and nephews.

His parents, George W. Bookless Sr., and Wilma Bookless preceded him in death.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses & physical therapists at Midwest Medical Center, Hospice of Dubuque, and his many friends, including members of The Cabin Club.

Online condolences may be left for the family at www.furlongfuneralchapel.com
