Dennis M. Germain

Dennis Maurice Germain, age 76, of Granada Hills, CA, formerly of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey on June 14, 2024, at Ageless Pride in Chatsworth, CA.  To honor Denny’s life, a private family service is being held.

Denny was born on May 29, 1948, in Dubuque, IA, a son to Maurice “Maury” and Betty (Knapp) Germain.  He was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School and went on to honorably serve his country with the U.S. Air Force.  Denny eventually married his high school sweetheart, Linda Shade in 1986.  Denny started his own limousine service in Los Angeles, Ca, which eventually led to him joining the Teamsters and driving for the Hollywood Studios for over 30 years until he finally decided to retire in 2013.  Denny enjoyed his work and treasured all of the relationships and memories he made along the way.  One of his favorite stories was having the opportunity to drive Donald Trump at the studio and afterwards was invited to join him for lunch.  Denny even found his way onto the big screen a couple of times and actually ended up with speaking parts in both “Roots” and “Defending Your Life” which truly made his day.

Denny was a kind and generous soul through and through.  If you were in need and Denny was around to remedy the situation, you could be sure that he would.  All who knew and loved Denny knew quite well that his dog, Bella, was the love of his life.  Their mutual admiration was continually on display and no doubt her heart is as broken as ours is today with Denny’s absence from our physical lives.  Denny really didn’t have time for extracurricular activities as hobbies as most would articulate with his continuous on-call schedule, but when time did allow, cars were where his heart would venture.  He and his father both had a passion for fast sports cars and would spend hours on end talking about their latest find or sightings.  Denny embraced life to the fullest and always kept himself busy making the most out of each day and opportunity which presented itself.  It’s difficult to imagine such a bright and loving free spirit leaving us behind now, but we trust that we will surely see him again and thankfully, completely free of the earthly health battles which we face much too often.  Thank you, Denny, for living life as you dreamed, for giving all that you had, for sharing your amazing sense of humor with everyone around you, and for reminding us that some of the greatest moments in the life are the simple and short-lived ones that really make the lasting impressions.  May the Lord bless and keep you safely in His loving arms until we all meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Denny include,

his wife,
Linda Shade-Germain, and his dog, Bella, Granada Hills, CA;

his sister,
Nancy (Jym Lyons) Germain, Dubuque, IA;

his nephews,
Ted (Kelly) Gremmel and Chris (Nancy) Germain;

along with numerous extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Denny was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Gary Germain; and his nephews, Denny Germain and Nick Germain.

Denny’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Ageless Pride and Perpetual Care Hospice for all of their professional and compassionate care.  We would also like to express a very special and heartfelt thank you to longtime Teamster friend, Randy Lovelady for all of his love and support during these most difficult days.  Knowing that there are friends out there who continually give more than they take is exactly what we needed in the midst of this tragic time and we are eternally grateful for all that you have done for us.  May the Lord bless you for all of your kindnesses.

Online condolences may be shared with Denny’s family at www.tristatecremationcenter.com

Gladys Wernimont

Gladys Wernimont, born on September 12, 1940, in Dubuque, Iowa, passed away at the age of 83 on June 14, 2024

Gladys’s life will be celebrated at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, on Tuesday June 18, 2024, with a visitation from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A rosary service will be said at 2:30 p.m. with a wake service to follow.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday June 19, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Key West with Monsignor Thomas Toale officiating. The burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Forever remembered by her children Ron Wernimont, Diane (Dave) Miner, Kevin (Jennifer) Wernimont, Donna Busch (Flint Drake), Ken Wernimont, Joyce (Shane) Cravens, Joanne Reynolds and Julie Wernimont.

Gladys treasured her 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren: Ryan (Molly) Wernimont and their children Ryder & Baby Girl, Brianna (Tony) Fury and their son Jack, Jake (Ashleigh) Miner and their daughters Aubrie & Aurora, Brandon Miner, Alyssa (Nick) Lynch and their children Aiden & Ella, Mackenzie Wernimont and her son Oliver, Myles Wernimont, Mitchell Wernimont, Jalee (Josh) Begle and their sons Mason & Will, Cody (Brittany) Frommelt and their children Gavin, Landon & Evelyn, Lucas (Victoria Vail) Busch, Adam (Jordan) Busch, Jayda Reynolds and Holland Reynolds.

She is also survived by her sisters, Luann Weber and Marilyn Bergfeld; In-laws Gib Clemen, Hubert and Liz Decker and many nieces and nephews.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie in 2018; infant son, Robert in 1969; parents Carlyn and Marie (Gansen) Denlinger; her siblings, Carol Clemen, John and Clair Denlinger; in-laws Ruth Denlinger, William and Mary Decker, Ralph Bergfeld and Milton Weber.

Gladys and Charlie were united in marriage on April 8, 1961, at St. Joseph Key West, the parish where she received her holy sacraments and remained a lifelong member.

She attended St. Joseph Key West through the eighth grade, the Immaculate Conception Academy, and was a member of the first graduating class of Wahlert High School in 1960.

After high school, Gladys worked at Sorbaus sewing baby clothing. A very delicate skill that Gladys continued to share through the years altering clothes for her family, quilting blankets for local charities and crafting walker bags for residents at Shady Rest, something that brought her great joy. Sorbaus required employees leave their employment when getting married, and so Charlie and Gladys began to write their story, and what a love story it was. Farming was at the center of their lives for many years. Farming was not new to Gladys as she grew up working on the family farm. She shared stories of her dad secretly treating her to candy bars as a way to thank her for getting up early to help with chores. Her loyalty to the farm life continued as her and Charlie partnered in milking the cows and tending to the crops while raising eight kids. Gladys’ greatest accomplishment and source of pride was the family her and Charlie created. Raising eight kids gave her lots of opportunities to take things in stride and pray. Later, she worked as a cook at Shady Rest in Cascade, forming lasting friendships with residents/families and co-workers over her 20+ years there.

Socializing was a natural gift of Gladys’; invitations of any sort were generally accepted with a quick “yes”. Welcoming family and friends into her home was a way for Gladys to showcase her favorite recipes and visit – a winning combination. Gladys was known to infuse fun into the party, be it a surprise gift, a quirky joke or laughable memory, it was clear through her and Charlie’s smiles their hearts were full. Homemade pies, fresh baked breads, turkey and dressing sandwiches, potato salad, canned pickles, a few of Gladys’ fan favorites. She set the bar high, however she was a great teacher and so these comforts of home will carry on to future generations.

Gladys was also known for the strength and resilience that carried her through the hard times. She was a woman of deep faith with an unwavering devotion to her family. She leaves behind a legacy of love and strength that will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in eternal peace.

There is something about losing a mother that is permanent and inexpressible—a wound that will never quite heal. Such a loss for us here on earth, but what a beautiful reunion she will have with dad. Fly high mom, we love you.

Mary Ann Kelleher

Mary Ann Kelleher went to her eternal reward on June 12, 2024, in her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, with Father Steve Garner and Deacon Dave Brinkmoeller officiating.  Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 – 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home, 2659 John F. Kennedy Road, where there will be a parish wake service at 7:00 p.m.

Mary Ann was born on January 9, 1933, the beloved daughter of George and Jean (Ballough) Haas. The Haas family lived next door to the Kelleher family for nine years, and “all because two people fell in love”, Mary Ann eventually “caught” Donovan “Red” Kelleher. They were married on November 8, 1952, at Nativity Church.  Together they shared 55 years of wedded bliss, which resulted in five children and their spouses, 14 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.

Mary Ann had a kind heart and gentle spirit. She was always upbeat and positive, bringing smiles and encouragement to everyone she met.  She was a great source of inspiration to others, even into her later years when she embarked on a journey to improve her health.  She was asked to be the keynote speaker at the Dubuque Live Healthy Iowa event.  She rode her recumbent bike in her living room over 3,000 miles, the equivalent of riding across the United States two times!

More than anything, Mary Ann cherished time with her family.  She loved hosting holidays and countless family gatherings with her camera in hand. As long as she was able, she attended endless events supporting her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Alongside Donovan, she enjoyed their long-standing couples club, playing euchre and sharing decades of friendship for over 53 years.

Mary Ann’s life was marked by her tireless service to others. At Senior High School she was the class president, homecoming queen, and was dedicated to organizing class reunions for 65 years. As her children grew, she was involved with PTA groups and was a Den, Cub and Girl Scout leader and CCD instructor.  For many years she enjoyed being involved with the Christian Women’s Mother’s Club Rosary Society, the Legion of Mary, and a hospice grief group. She also received the Governor’s Award for her volunteer services as the President of the Multiple Sclerosis Dubuque Chapter for over 20 years. Her deep faith and loyal service to Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit Parish) spanned 67 years, supporting her parish community in many ways. It warmed her heart to foster lifelong connections and bring people together.

She took great pride in sending cards for every occasion and event to friends and family, especially during the holidays sharing time with her closest loved ones baking cookies and candy.  Her cards brought warmth and joy to countless recipients.

Throughout her life Mary Ann was a pillar of strength and a steward of her faith, admired by all who were blessed to know her.  If honesty, loyalty, and compassion are a measure of a person’s worth, then Mary Ann was a billionaire.

Mary Ann is survived by her children: Timothy Jon (Helen-nee Majerus) Kelleher, Wanda Jeanne (Gene) Pfab, Wendy Jayne (Dan) Merritt, Terrance Jozef (Deb Avenarius-nee Helling) Kelleher, and Todd Jaymes (Ann-nee Schlichte) Kelleher.  She was “Grandma Mimi” to Karrie (Jason) Moeller, Kallie (Luke) Slaymaker, Kristie (Ryan) Johnson, Anna (Justin) Roling, Cheri (Cody) Boat, Amber Kelleher, Brandon (Victoria) Merritt, Brock Merritt, Ashley (Chris) Rothmeier, Lauren (Austin) Lloyd, Emily (Paul) Pins and Todd “T.J.” Kelleher; and step-grand daughters Heather Avenarius (Freddie Kammiller) and Ashley (Nate) Benter. Her great-grandchildren include Allie, Leah, and Katelyn Moeller, Tayva, Arjay and Roan Johnson, Jonah Roling, Ainsley Maeann Merritt, Madyson Digmann, Ayla, Kemper and Jack Rothmeier, Evelyn, Kash, and Krew Lloyd; step great-grandchildren Alyssa and Alivia Reed, Nevada, Savana, and Jax Sharkey, and Kailey and Cy Benter. Also surviving are  brother Bruce (Connie) Haas, sister-in-law Susan Bahl, sister-in-law Lorraine Kelleher, and sister-in-law Karon Haas; many loving nieces and nephews, and her fur baby and loving companion Lucy Lu.

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Donovan “Red” Kelleher (on January 4, 2008), her parents, George and Jean Haas, her in-laws Melvin and Dorothy Kelleher, brother George Haas, brother-in-law Joe Bahl, brother and sister-in-law Jim and Helen Kelleher, brother-in-law Bob Kelleher, beloved grandson T.J. Kelleher, and great-grandson Conner Jace Moeller.

In lieu of flowers, a Mary Ann Kelleher Memorial fund has been established.

Marinda L. Babeshoff

Marinda “Rindy” Lynn Babeshoff, 71, of Delmar, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, June 9, 2024, at her home. She was an active member of Faith Community Church, serving as a deaconess, participating in Bible studies, children’s ministry, and ladies’ groups, where she found fellowship and a place to share her deep convictions and love.

Rindy was a woman who could excel at any task presented to her. Ranging from medical transcription to teaching, she worked for others to help support and rear her daughters into successful, well-rounded women. Once her children were adults, she was able to focus on her passions. Rindy earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa in 2003, a testament to her creative soul. Her thirst for knowledge and a desire to serve led her back to academia, where she achieved a Registered Nursing degree from Scott Community College in 2007. Rindy’s professional life was marked by dedication and compassion, through her teaching elementary education, working with the Have a Healthy Baby program, and culminating in caring for countless patients at Genesis Hospital in Davenport, Iowa.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Rindy was known for her remarkable talent and creativity. She mastered the art of pottery, spinning, weaving, sewing, quilting, and crafting. Her creations were not just objects of beauty but also a source of warmth and comfort for her beloved children and grandchildren. Each quilt she made remains a cherished embrace from a woman whose hands were never idle.

Those who love her will remember her not only for her creativity, but also her sense of humor. Whether it was laughing at being called “Mommy Dearest” by her daughters or joking about her “witch powers” with her sons-in-law, Rindy always kept those around her joyful with her playful retorts and anecdotes. She was always ready with a swift come back and her smile is forever etched in the minds of those who knew her.

Rindy’s adventurous spirit found pleasure in traveling with her husband, Jim. Together, they explored the scenic beauty of Door County, Wisconsin, and shared memorable moments on trips to Texas and Alabama to visit their daughters and extended family. These journeys were as much about discovery as they were about the joy of being with loved ones.

In April 2023, Rindy faced her most formidable challenge when diagnosed with endometrial cancer. She confronted this adversity with characteristic determination, undergoing radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery. Through the unwavering support of her husband Jim, sheer willpower, and resilience, she progressed from immobility to walking unassisted and even driving once again. Rindy’s battle with cancer was a testament to her strength and tenacity. Unfortunately, cancer is a relentless foe. Despite her valiant fight, Rindy’s journey with the disease came to an end as she passed peacefully in her sleep. Now, she rests with Jesus, undoubtedly crafting beauty in Heaven as she did on Earth.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband Jim Babeshoff of Delmar; daughters Lori (Wes) Herrera of Elk Grove, CA; Gretchen Hunt of Dallas, TX; Simone (Dan) Donovan of Boone, IA; and Wendy (David) StJohn of Montgomery, AL; 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and a brother Christoper (Kay) Sparks of Portland, OR.  She was preceded in death by parents and a brother Jimmy.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date, yet to be determined. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Marinda Lynn Babeshoff Memorial Fund has been established.

The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family and cremation rites have been accorded.  Online Condolences may be left at www.CarsonAndSon.com.

Mona A. Udelhofen

Mona Ann Udelhofen, 90, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on June 10, 2024, at Hawkeye Care Center in Dubuque.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday June 13, 2024, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Catholic Church with Father Steve Garner officiating. Friends and family may visit from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at church on Thursday. Entombment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is assisting the family.

Mona was born on January 30, 1934, in Dubuque, the daughter of Gerald and Bernice (Kressig) Scherrer. She married Glen W. Udelhofen on August 18, 1956. They had a loving, happy marriage for almost 46 years until he passed away on April 19, 2002.

She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in 1951 and went on to Clark College. She taught at St. Joseph the Worker School for two years (1953-1955) and was told she was the first (full time) lay teacher in the parochial schools of Dubuque, although part time lay teachers had been in several schools. Working with the Dominican Sisters was a wonderful experience, and she knew at that point that she loved teaching. She returned to continue her education at Wisconsin State College – Platteville.

After her marriage, she taught at Lincoln School.  Mona then stayed home for several years as four children were born and raised. She returned to teach at Fulton School and later at Marshall School until Glen was ready to retire. He, jokingly, asked if she was going to quit teaching willingly or if he had to drag her out by her feet. She retired, a decision she never regretted as one year later Glen was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia. Luckily, they had nine more years together.

The remaining years were filled with family and friends. Bridge filled many hours as well as Mothers Club, High School Class Club, traveling by car or with Americlub, and playing the slots at casinos. She also did flower arranging at home, decorating for family and friends. Every holiday was fully decorated in her home.

Surviving are two daughters Janet (Craig “Rett”) Rettenmaier of Dubuque, the “angel” Mona lived with for several years, and Jayne (Terry) Puls of Peosta the daughter who kept Mona organized and eating the latest Trader Joe’s snacks; two sons, Jeffrey (Denise) Udelhofen of Peosta the son who made sure Mona had everything safely installed and working, and Jerry (Colleen) Udelhofen of Robins who made a bright spot in Mona’s day with frequent visits, treats, and phone calls; six grandchildren Jessie Puls, Erik Puls, Melissa Puls, Randi Jo Rettenmaier, Cody Udelhofen, and Alli Udelhofen, one great grandson Rett Rettenmaier; a sister-in-law, Joan Udelhofen; and many nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Glen; uncle Charles Scherrer, two brothers-in-law, Claire (Dorothy) Udelhofen, Jerry Udelhofen; sisters-in-law Lila Udelhofen, Eileen (Red) Schroeder, Vera (Arne) Vertanen, Jenny (Bob) Burns

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque and Hawkeye Care Center for all of their amazing care of mom, especially the nurses and aides of Penn Suites.
