A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 AM, on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at St. Michael Catholic Church, Galena, where friends may call after 10:30 AM until the time of Mass. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 PM, Monday, March 27, 2023, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena where a parish rosary will be recited at 6:45 PM. The burial will be in East Dubuque, Cemetery, East Dubuque, IL. Military honors will be accorded graveside by members of the American Legion Post #787 of East Dubuque, VFW Post #2665 and American Legion Post #193 of Galena.

He was the thirteenth child born in 1937 to Edward (who passed away just months after Bert’s birth) and Lucille (Kieffer) Tranel on the family farm near East Dubuque, IL. He attended a one-room schoolhouse, St. Mary’s Catholic School in East Dubuque, Loras Academy in Dubuque, IA, and one year at Loras College. He was activated into the Wisconsin National Guard Red Arrow Division during the Berlin Crisis. He pursued his lifelong dream of farming, first in East Dubuque and then expanding his farm operations in Galena where he lived and farmed until the present while practicing soil and water conservation. Bert always had the desire to leave his farm and the world in a better place than where he found it.  In 1963, Bert married Ann Berlage. Together they devoted themselves to the family they loved: five children, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Bert enjoyed the frequent weekend visits from his children and grandkids and desired to share his love for the land and the values of farm life. He also was dedicated to living his Catholic Faith and to passing it along to his family. In his later years, his love for sharing rural life, family values, faith, and his well-known humor led him to author two books on these topics. Bert enjoyed visiting relatives, neighbors, and his local friends. He brought much laughter to them and to the parishioners at St. Michael Catholic Church in Galena where he attended regularly, volunteered as a religion teacher, and offered behind-the-scenes support in various ways.

He is survived by his wife with whom he would have shared his life for 60 years in July; his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: Ted (Sheila) of West Bend, WI, Ethan (Rachel), Ezra, Tess (Charlie) and Thea, Eli; Timothy of Galena; Dr. Patrick of St. Joseph, IL and Tate, Anna, Luke, Gage, and Rose; Tricia of Galena; Dr. Dean (Christine) of Madrid, IA, and Elizabeth, his siblings, Richard, Margaret, Sr. Jean OP; siblings-in-law: Virginia and Bonnie Tranel and Larry, Kay, Carol, and Marilyn Berlage. Also surviving are Joe, Faye, Bethany, and Bobby Berlage, and many nieces and nephews.

Bert was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings: Ralph (Florence), Howard (Lillian), Fr. Dorance, Sr. Norita OSF, Sr. Betty SSpS, Sr. Danita OSF, Fr. Daniel, Dr. Nathaniel, and Roger; and Madonna (wife of Richard), Eugene Jahn (husband of Margaret). Also, his Berlage in-laws: Herbert (Arlene), Maurice, Kenneth, and James (Sue).

He was grateful for the physical care offered by Hospice of Dubuque and the spiritual care of Fr. Howard Barch. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Michael Catholic Church in Galena; Catholic Relief Services; St. Jude’s Hospital, or a charity of your choice.

Char earned her BA in Classical Languages from Clarke College. She continued her education while raising her children, earning her MA and PhD in American Studies from the University of Iowa.

Char married James Edward “Ed” Hawks on November 19, 1951, at Nativity Church in Dubuque. Together they shared an unparalleled love and an eternal partnership. The years were filled with raising their children, enjoying their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and traveling the country. Wherever their travels took them, Ed commented that they met a relative of Char’s.  Their best days were spent at an old stone house, lovingly called the “Rock House,” near Bellevue.  Their seven children, and their children’s spouses, are Tim (Mary Lew McCormick), Shorewood, WI, Teri (John) Goodmann, Dubuque, IA, Cathy (Tony) Topf, Wonder Lake, IL, Laura Hawks, Iowa City, IA, Susan Hawks, Sugar Grove, IL,  Carolyn (Bill) Bates, Donahue, IA,  and Lisabeth Hawks, South Elgin, IL. After earning her advanced degrees Char worked at Augustana College (Rock Island, IL) as an adjunct professor and the Director of the Reading and Writing (Lab) Center.  At Augustana College, Char became a beloved mentor of many students.  Never one to retire, Char and Ed opened Hawk Hollow Antiques and Collectibles in Bellevue, IA and Galena, IL. In all these endeavors Char developed close, life-long friendships that brought her much joy.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Dubuque; the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary; Our Lady of the Mississippi Abbey; or Luther Manor Communities. Char never met a person, plant, or book she didn’t love. In lieu of a memorial, feel free to donate a book to a library, volunteer time to a literacy organization, plant a tree, or plant some flowers. These meet Char’s greatest wish to make the world a better place. Family, faith, and education were most important to her.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Luther Manor Communities and Hospice of Dubuque for their loving care and generous spirit.

The Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. For further information, please visit egelhofsiegertcasper.com.

Thomas I. Correll

Thomas I. “Tic” Correll, age 50, of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey on March 20, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital.  To honor Tom’s life, his Celebration of Life will be held from on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at The Other Side, 68 Sinsinawa Avenue in East Dubuque, IL.  A ride will be held from 12:00-5:00 p.m. with live music, food, and raffles to follow.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Tom’s family.

Tom was born on July 22, 1972, in Dubuque, IA, a son to Edward K. and Dolores M. (Bettcher) Correll.  He grew up with a quiet and humble spirit, but also knew that there was always a time and place in the days we walk through this life where a little agitation and fun can be had as well.  He met the love of his life, Amy Walters, while in high school and the two were united in marriage on August 29, 1998.  They were blessed with two daughters and an abundance of wonderful memories over their years together.  Tom spent some time at DMACC learning his upholstery trade which he thoroughly enjoyed utilizing with his business, Tic Tac Custom Upholstery.  He also worked full-time in the maintenance department at the University of Dubuque for many years.  Tom’s free-time was no exception when it came to enjoying life to its fullest.  Whether he was cooking up a delicious creation in the kitchen, practicing his perfect shot on the archery range, or simply spending a little time under the hood of the car, Tom made the most of each day and the opportunities it presented.  But, truth be known, all who truly knew and loved Tom understood that his family was the real driving force in his life.  His devotion was unwavering and his commitment as solid as you’ll ever find.  The void that Tom’s absence leaves now in the hearts and minds of all of his family and friends is beyond immeasurable.  His perpetual kindness, effortless patience, and willingness to always put others before himself is a legacy that only a few ever obtain.  Thank you, Tom, for living the kind of life that will allow us to treasure your memories for generations to come.  May the Lord now give you peace from your earthly battles, along with the peace and healing our broken hearts can only seek today.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Tom include,

his beautiful wife (Blondie) of 24 years,
Amy Correll, Dubuque, IA;

his two kiddos,
Ashleigh Correll, Dubuque, IA,
and Emily (Jaden) Correll, Wilton, IA;

Loretta Paar, Dubuque, IA;

his favorite family pets,

his grandpets,

along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, COUSINS, extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Tom was preceded in death by his father; his fathers-in-law, Richard “Dick” Paar and Larry Walters; and his sister, Carmelita “Carm” (Jerry) Dean.

Tom’s family would like to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you to all of our family and friends who have stood by all of us along his journey.  Every act of generosity, kindness, and faithful care and support has been truly appreciated and will never be forgotten.  May the Lord bless each and every one of you for your compassion!

Linda M. Gammon

Linda M. (Wieser) Gammon of Santa Fe, NM, passed away peacefully at home on March 20, 2023. A Celebration of Life will be held on April 1, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Santa Fe Memorial Gardens with a reception immediately following at Keller Williams.

Linda will be remembered by everyone for her friendliness, warmth, laughter, dry wit, her hard work in whatever endeavor she chose, and her commitment to making everyone in her circle comfortable, whether clients, close friends, cherished nieces and nephews, or total strangers.

With her red hair and open smile, she was recognizable in any setting. Linda was the calming spirit at every gathering, punctuating moments with her signature laugh and “Hey Kiddo, how’s it going?”

Linda was born November 21, 1953, in Dubuque, IA to Wilfred and Dorothy (McGovern) Wieser. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1972. She worked at John Deere-Dubuque in Experimental Engineering until 1979, when she moved to Dallas, TX. She married Joe Gammon on October 25, 1986. They made their home in Dallas until moving to Santa Fe in 1992.

Linda and Joe created Red Dog Construction and built custom homes in the area, including rastra construction before it became commonplace. Linda served as a past President of the Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association and remained active in the organization until her death.

Linda became a Realtor in 2008, and was part of the Keller Williams Santa Fe family. She was an early investor in KW and served on the KW Associate Leadership Council for 8 years. She was an active member of SFAR, serving on multiple committees including Community Services, Government Affairs, and the MLS Committee.

She was chair of the KW Culture Committee for 4 years, selflessly giving her time to work with local charities like the Cancer Foundation for New Mexico, Adelante, and Bienvenidos. Linda sold hundreds of homes and became a lifelong friend to her clients, simply because she cared for the people she served and believed in building relationships at every opportunity.

Linda enjoyed playing golf and on a sunny day could be found on the course at Marty Sanchez. She was the Realtor with an open-door policy so that she was available to help new brokers or to share friendly conversation with colleagues.

She and Joe had no children, but in her own words, were “THAT aunt and uncle” for their nieces and nephews. You’d often meet a niece or nephew each summer when Joe and Linda opened their home and hearts to the kids in their extended family.

Survivors include her husband Joe, her siblings Sue (Lonnie) Cox, Deb (Rick) Henry, Jan (Dennis) Dodson, Jeff (Joan) Wieser, Sally Wieser, Jay (Carla) Wieser, and Scott Wieser, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

Helena Fleming

Helena Fleming died peacefully in Hospice care March 22, 2023, age 96.

Helena Easson Greenhill was born in Seattle, Washington on July 22, 1926, to James Easson and Christina Ford Greenhill. She had one older sister, Jessie. She graduated from Queen Anne High School and attended Seattle Pacific College.

The Greenhills were recent Scottish immigrants for whom the focus of family life was their church fellowship comprising many European immigrants like themselves. Among them was Kenneth Fleming, whose English immigrant family also lived on Queen Anne hill.

Both Ken and Helena developed a strong interest in foreign missions sooner than an interest in each other. Even as a teenager Helena corresponded with dozens of missionaries around the world, with a particular interest in China, shared with Ken. They married on June 10, 1950, just as China was expelling all foreign missionaries in 1950-1951.

Their interests were redirected toward the Zulus in South Africa, where they arrived in 1952. Here their three children, Lois, Peter, and James were born and educated, mostly in Durban.

Helena entertained guests for meals, for overnight and for much longer visits than modest accommodations with one bathroom might have suggested. Missionaries passing through, fellow workers “coming to town” and the local young people’s group meeting Sunday afternoons were all welcome. When a man observing the wood floors pockmarked by the stiletto heels women wore in the 1960s said he wouldn’t want that on his floors she told him she didn’t mind because this was the Lord’s house, not hers.

She taught Sunday School with older girls, had Bible clubs for children, Bible studies for teenage girls, and later worked with women in a township Bible study where the women taught her to make her delicious Durban curry. Helena was very musical, her strong soprano voice gracing many weddings and other events.

In 1976 Ken and Helena relocated to Oak Park, Illinois, where Ken developed the Missions program at (then) Emmaus Bible School. In 1984 the Flemings moved along with Emmaus Bible College to Dubuque, Iowa. Helena continued her life-long focus on hospitality, as well as working in the Emmaus archives and with many activities at Arbor Oaks Bible Chapel.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to so many.

Cecilia attended school in North Buena Vista.  She was united in marriage to Francis Hirsch on February 15, 1947, at Sacred Heart Church.  They were blessed with a large family and 46 years of marriage before Francis passed away on December 30, 1993.  She was a fiercely devoted wife and mom who always made sure her kids were safe and well behaved.  After the kids were older, she took a job as a nurses aide and dietician at Xavier Hospital and also cleaned private residences and babysat for several families in Dubuque.  Cecilia was a long time member of Sacred Heart Church and Rosary Society.  In her free time, you could often find Cecilia sitting at her special rocker by the kitchen table with her trusty space heater keeping her nice and toasty warm.  She also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.  She loved being outside on her porch swing and she was famous for her green thumb.  Cecilia grew beautiful flower gardens, potted plants and a big vegetable garden every year.  She was a fantastic cook and her scalloped potatoes were always a hit.  Cecilia loved Christmas.  She always had the tallest tree around and would purchase new ornaments throughout the entire year getting ready to decorate.  She also enjoyed collecting specialty dolls which she passed down to her family.  Anyone who knew Cecilia knew that her family was always her top priority.  On Sundays, she and Francis piled all of the kids in the car and they would head out to Buenie to get together with her siblings.  Even after the children were grown she still worried about them and checked in with them regularly.  Cecilia was a wonderful woman and she will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.

Valida Harrison

Valida “Val” Harrison, age 82, of East Dubuque, IL, completed her earthly journey suddenly on March 20, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.  To honor Val’s life, a private family service will be held.  Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Val’s family.

Val was born on April 21, 1940, in Lithuania, one of six children in her family.  She eventually made her way to the United States and thankfully met and married to the love of her life, George B. Harrison, on August 19, 1961.  They were blessed with 32 wonderful years together before George was sadly called home ahead of her on May 24, 1994.  Val enjoyed her years she spent as a school bus driver and the countless hours of memories she made with the children on her routes.  She also spent some time working in the laundry at the Days Inn where she made many friends along the way.  In her free-time, Val enjoyed trying her luck at the casino and thoroughly enjoyed an evening of Bingo whenever time allowed.  Her regular morning visits to the Sunshine Family Restaurant to have breakfast among friends was another highlight in Val’s life.  Watching Val leave us so quickly has been difficult for her family and friends, but we trust that her independent spirit wouldn’t have had it any other way and that she is now enjoying a joyful reunion with her husband, George, and the rest of her family who have been awaiting her arrival.  Thank you, Val, for the love and memories you shared throughout your journey and may the Lord keep you safe in His loving arms until we meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Val include,

her sister-in-law,
Gloria Harrison, Dubuque, IA;

her step-son,
