Donald B. Campbell

Donald B. Campbell, 88, of Galena, IL, died peacefully on December 22, 2023. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family.

Don, and Priscilla, who predeceased him in 2020, lived in the Galena Territory for over 25 years. Both loved the area’s natural beauty, engaging community, and diverse plants and wildlife. Don and Priscilla came to Galena after Don retired from a calling in accounting and finance, which he began at Arthur Andersen in Chicago after graduating from the University of Illinois and serving in the United States Army in France. Don left accountancy for the manufacturing industry in 1970 when he joined the dairy machinery company Cherry-Burrell in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He stayed with the corporation that owned Cherry-Burrell for over twenty years, followed by a period with a consulting firm in Chicago in the early 1990s before he returned to Cedar Rapids to cap out his career with Kwik-Way Manufacturing.

Don was an active member of his community, serving on the board of the Cedar Rapids Symphony, raising money for the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation, volunteering with Junior Achievement, and, in the Galena area, working with the Rotary Club and Habitat for Humanity. Don and Priscilla both believed strongly in giving back to the communities in which they lived and worked, and they did so throughout their lives.

Don is remembered for many things, including his sense of humor, his keen intellect and interest in engaging in conversation, and his commitment to doing a job well.

He was devoted to his 56-year marriage to Priscilla, whom he missed dearly, and to his never-ending interest in learning; he was an unwavering believer in the value of education. An avid reader, he had a lifelong love of music, particularly opera and symphonies which he played loudly. Don enjoyed playing golf – he was particularly clutch when modest bets were on the line – and was a good cook who liked replicating and occasionally improving recipes from noted restaurants he had visited. Don was a great fan of Big Ten football and basketball, and we know that he pulls for the Fighting Illini even now. Above all, he and Priscilla were devoted parents and grandparents who put their family first.

He is survived by children Benton and Bethany, and grandchildren Emily, Evan, and Nathan.

A memorial service will be held at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Benjamin Christopher Tvedt Memorial Lectureship Fund, the care of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation.

We think about Don and Priscilla daily, and we are grateful for everything they did for us and our time together. As fundamental optimists who strove to improve themselves and the world around them, they embraced the saying, “Don’t be sad because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

Sandra L. Henry

Sandra L. Henry, age 85, of Dubuque, IA, completed her earthly journey on December 25, 2023, while at home surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Sandra’s life, a memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, December 29, 2023, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, 2921 Central Avenue in Dubuque, with Father Steve Garner officiating.  Family and friends of Sandra’s are invited to join in fellowship for one hour prior to the service at the church.  Burial will be in Texas at a later date.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Sandra’s family.

Sandra was born on October 6, 1938, in Dubuque, Iowa, a daughter to Gregory C. and Lucille (Fath) Meyer.  She was born with a love and adoration for family and friends which Sandra carried faithfully throughout her 85 years among us.  Sandra eventually met the love of her life, John Henry, and the two were united in marriage in 1960, and blessed with many wonderful years together, and a family of their own to raise and nurture.  Sadly, John was called home ahead of her in 2001.  Sandra decided to move back to Dubuque following his passing to be closer to her siblings.  She devoted her working years as an X-Ray Technician at the Northwest Hospital in Houston, Texas, always fulfilling her internal drive to care for others while making the world around her a better place.

In her free-time, Sandra always enjoyed sitting down at her sewing machine to work on her newest project.  She was also an avid fan of a little retail therapy whenever the opportunity arose, and if she was presented with a relaxing lunch date, or an evening to sit around the card table with family and friends, you could be sure that she would consider that to be time well spent.  But, for those who truly knew and loved Sandra, it was no secret that her greatest joy in life was spending time with her grandchildren.  She possessed an unlimited loving heart of a grandmother and was always fulfilled and internally satisfied when she could share it with those around her.  There is no denying that our hearts break at the mere thought of moving forward without Sandra’s bright and shining light in our daily lives, but we thankfully can find peace in knowing that she is now free from her earthly battles and is enjoying the eternal reunion with her loved one’s who have been called home ahead of her.  Thank you, Sandra, for living your best life without regret and for sharing so much love along the way that what remains now is an abundance of precious memories for all to treasure while we wait to see your beautiful smile once again.  May the Lord bless you and keep you safe in His loving arms until we meet again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of Sandra include,

her four children,
Pat Henry, Corpus Christi, TX,
Kathy (Tim) Braden, Kerrville, TX,
Steve (Gyna) Henry, Montgomery, TX,
