Marilyn L. Bird
The beloved “little sister” of our family, Marilyn Lee Bird, passed away unexpectedly in her sleep on Sunday, February 12, 2023, at the age of 55 at her home in Scottsdale, AZ.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 4th, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Rd, Dubuque, with a Memorial Service held at 4 p.m. Private burial will be Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque, IA. Memorial Services will be live-streamed on Marilyn’s obituary at www.egelhofsiegertcasper.com.
Marilyn was born & raised in Dubuque, IA, the youngest child of Verna and Eugene Bird, on January 17th, 1968. She married Edwin “Jewel” Barber on September 11, 1998, in Milwaukee, WI.
Her early schooling included Holy Ghost Elementary, & Wahlert High School with a tight knit group of lifelong friends. (These were the ’80’s; times were fun!!). She graduated from Marquette University with a degree that took her eventually to Chicago and to a job she loved working at Robert Half for 20 years. Her next endeavor was to embrace the welcome warmth of Arizona, putting her corporate skills to use at the Chicago based Addison Group.
Throughout her career, Marilyn took a “people first” approach, in her empathetic leadership style and later in her commitment to professional development. Those that worked with Marilyn note her appreciation for them as an individual. While she had high expectations, she guided them while infusing energy and fun. Many recall her tribute to a music legend in a meeting or training or a celebratory team outing to Summerfest. She had a forever impact personally and professionally on all she worked with.
Sadly, it was just one year ago that Marilyn laid to rest her own mother, Verna, and 16 months prior to that, her father, Gene. We are heartbroken that her life ended so suddenly, and too soon, and without the goodbyes that we wish we’d had.
We take solace in knowing that Marilyn’s life was purposeful, successful, and joyful. She loved her work and the fulfillment it brought her. She embraced adventures, big and small. Her approach was not shy. Her arms were wide open to what life offered, her feet were ready to dance, and her voice was confident and strong. She was exactly, happily, who she wanted to be.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, her grandparents, father in-law, Eugene Baker: sister in-law, Eva, and brother in-law, Henry. She is survived by her dear husband/adventure companion, Jewel, of 25 years; her sister, Carol (Martin) Petitgout of East Dubuque, IL; a brother, Eugene (Joy) Bird of Waukee, IA; a nephew, Zachary Bird, of Chicago and nieces Abby (Zack) Berger of North Liberty, IA, Sophie, Stephanie, and Natalie. She is survived by her mother-in-law Onnie Baker, as well as a large extended family of in-laws.
Every day of one’s life counts, good or bad, blessed or cursed. Marilyn, ever the Johnny Cash enthusiast, would encourage you to find the precious in every breath God gives you. Go and find joy today. And then share it with someone you love.
“Life and love go on-Let the music play.” – Johnny Cash.
In lieu of flowers you can consider a donation to: Mercy Home for Boys and Girls,1140 W. Jackson Boulevard, Chicago, IL. 60607 or donate online at: mercyhome.org (http://mercyhome.org/) In Memory of Marilyn Bird.

John J. O’Connell Jr.
John Joseph O’Connell Jr., (aka “Poppo,” “Loco Rojo,” “Red”) always played the cards he was dealt and on Saturday, February 18, 2023, he played his final hand.
John was born in Chicago on February 21, 1939, to John and Mary (Boyle) O’Connell. Setting a life-long trend, young John worked hard, and played even harder, including flashing his athletic prowess playing basketball, football, and kitten ball (if you have to ask, you’re not a Chicagoan).
John attended Loras College, where much to his surprise and to his everlasting pride, he persuaded Mary Therese Scheibel to date and eventually marry him. John also made lifelong friends with his fellow DuHawks, enjoying their company for the rest of his life on golf outings, luncheons, and reminiscing about their past adventures and “misunderstandings” with law enforcement (they “borrowed” those cars, we swear).
In 1962, John entered the Marine Corps. Despite a brief misunderstanding with Mexican authorities that landed him in an Ensenada jail cell and resulted in the nickname “Loco Rojo,” John was eternally proud of his service to his country.
John spent his life as a diligent, hardworking, and honorable provider for his wife, four wonderful children and one numbskull (we’re still not telling!). Over his storied career, he worked for General Adjustment Bureau, Gallagher Bassett, and the Archdiocese of Dubuque, always with a focus on helping those in need and doing what was best for his family. He cherished his wife and shared a tremendously blessed marriage of over 52 years.
John was also a loving father, who always shared the last puzzle piece, stayed up late perfecting Easter clues, remained committed to his sobriety, and made gourmet meals such as beans and eggs, fried bologna sandwiches, and Black Cows for his wife and children. John also was a dedicated friend, and loved to play poker, visit the dog track, and joyfully dance the Twist.
In his retirement, John enjoyed golfing with “The Dirty Dozen” from the American Legion, walking five miles a day while counting his steps, and spending time with his children, their spouses (all of whom he liked), and his numerous grandchildren.
John’s family wishes to thank Eagle Pointe Place for creating a warm community where he enjoyed his last five years. He loved playing Euchre with friends, and appreciated the staff setting up frequent video calls with the family and being honored for his time in the Marines (except for that Mexican prison snafu).
Those left to faithfully retell his stories include John’s five children: Kathleen (Patrick) Roseboom, John (Marcia McCormick) O’Connell III, Maureen (Michael) Sattan, Sheila (Keith) Berkley, and Megan (Matt) Cox; along with 16 grandchildren – Rachael, Ryan, Erin, Morgan, Ceridwen, Rhiannon, Michael, Stephen, Nicholas, Makenna, Alex, Sam, Calista, Will, Nora and Eliza. And you. John is also fondly remembered by his sister, Kathy (Bob) Marsh of Manassas, VA.
Friends, enemies, veterans, golfers, card players, insurance professionals, saints, sinners, lookie-loos and paparazzi may join the family for a Farewell Toast visitation from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 John F. Kennedy Road in Dubuque. It will be followed by a vigil prayer service beginning at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 1, at the Church of the Resurrection, 4300 Asbury Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes copious amounts of booze and chocolates — we recently ran out after Mom’s funeral five years ago. For those of you that are more charitably inclined, please consider a donation to Opening Doors, a Dubuque non-profit that empowers the lives of homeless women and children at Maria House, Teresa Shelter and Francis Apartments.
John’s children wish to express their condolences to everyone who didn’t have a father as loyal, hardworking, and loving as he was. Onward and upward!
Richard Tigges
Richard “Dick” Tigges, 80, of Sherrill, died Thursday, February 23, 2023 at home.
Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Sunday, February 26, 2023 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory, and from 9:00 am until 9:45 am on Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dubuque.
The Funeral Service for Dick will be at 10:00 am on Monday, February 27, 2023, at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. Jonathan T. Crawford officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque.
Dick was born December 8, 1942, in Dubuque, the son of Arthur and Delores (Herbst) Tigges. When he was 16, the family moved to the current farm in Sherrill. There he met his future wife, Charlotte Clemen, who lived on a neighboring farm. They were married on May 15, 1965, in Dubuque.
Dick was a firefighter for the City of Dubuque for 32 years where he was the official “head” cook, retiring in 1998. He also was a lifelong farmer, first with his dad and then with his son. Although the farm was not large, he compassionately cared for every acre and every animal that set foot on it. As a typical farmer, he was the jack all of trades but was the master of none. Dick was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church for 58 years. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and football but his true passion was farming, even when he was physically not able.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 58 years, Charlotte; three children, Lori (Tim) Ollendick of Dubuque, and their children, Jacob, Rachel, and Jonas; Kristie (Dennis) Fry of Dubuque, and their children, Brianna and Emily; and Mike (Danelle) Tigges of Dubuque, and their children, Brett, Devin, Jaelyn, Riley, and Taylor; brother-in-law, Richard (Carla) Clemen of Sherrill; two sisters-in-law, Marlene Lenaburg of Dubuque and Nancy Tigges of Dubuque; and special friends, John and Marlene Weber of Dubuque.
He was preceded in death by his parents; twin sisters in infancy; one brother, Dennis Tigges; brother-in-law, Charles Clemen; sister-in-law, Carol Moorman; and mother and father-in-law, Ambrose and Martha Clemen.
The family would like to extend a special Thank You to Hospice of Dubuque, especially, Jeremiah and to Finley Homecare, especially, Tracy and Ann.
Whether he was known as Dick, “Sam”, Dad or Papa we were all blessed to have known and loved such a strong-willed, happy, loving, and proud man who will be forever in our hearts and missed dearly, until we meet again.
