Helene M. Byrne
Helene M. Byrne of Dubuque, Iowa, was called home peacefully on Friday, December 16, 2022.
To honor Helene’s life, private funeral services will be held at the Church of the Resurrection. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Helene was born on the family farm in rural Wisconsin. On the farm, she worked hard during and following the Great Depression. Helene was a graduate of the Immaculate Conception Academy High School in Dubuque, Class of 1949. She was a successful and efficient legal secretary at the O’Conner Law Firm. She would later become a full-time homemaker.
On October 17, 1959, Helene married the love of her life, William J. Byrne, at Saint Columbkille’s Catholic Church in Dubuque. They were blessed with three wonderful children: Linda, Patricia and David. The family lived in Dubuque and then Ottumwa, Iowa, later returning to Dubuque. Helene was a longtime member of the Church of the Resurrection.
Helene was actively involved in the school PTA, as well as the League of Women Voters and the church’s Altar and Rosary Society and choir. She served as a “Block Mother” in the neighborhood to provide safety and security to any child needing assistance. Helene volunteered to raise funds for the American Cancer Society every fall. Helene transported her children to a myriad of activities – including religious education classes, swim lessons and baseball games. She prioritized sharing her religious faith with her family. In addition to volunteer activities, Helene enjoyed playing Euchre, genealogy, outdoor walks, letter writing, and cheering for the Chicago Cubs.
We are truly saddened by Helene’s passing from this life to the next, but find real comfort in knowing she is reunited with her husband, Bill.
Those left to cherish Helene’s memory include her three children, Linda Byrne (Mike Brown), Mendota Heights, MN, Patricia Byrne, West Burlington, IA, and David (Anne) Byrne, Ames, IA. Helene also leaves four granddaughters: Alyssa Brown (Ryan Schmidt), Julia Brown Ferrero (Andrea Ferrero), Elizabeth Brown and Brianna Byrne. She leaves two great- grandchildren (Liliana and Vincent Ferrero). Helene also leaves a nephew, Robert Graf, a sister-in-law Cynthia Nelms Byrne and our dear family friend, Cheryl Litch, along with other relatives and friends.
Helene was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, Jean Graf, Richelle Houtakker, Richard Houtakker, and her husband.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to the American Cancer Society, in honor of her late husband Bill, or the donor’s favorite charity.
Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Crematory is in care of the arrangements.

William A. Kelly III
William Austin Kelly III, also known to his childhood friends and family as Gary, 77, of Galena, IL, passed away peacefully at his home on December 9, 2022. A Celebration of Life will be hosted on May 6, 2023, from 1:00-5:00 PM at Chestnut Mountain Resort, 8700 W Chestnut Mountain Rd., Galena, IL 61036, in the Mississippi Vista Room. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena is assisting the family.
Bill was born on November 20, 1945, the son of William Austin Kelly Jr. and Loretta Delaney in Oak Park, IL. As a boy, Bill developed a strong work ethic he would carry with him for the rest of his life. At ages 14 and 15, he picked and planted sweet corn, tomatoes, parsley, and cabbage. When Bill turned 16, he worked at the Arlington Park Race Track for the next two summers. He worked seven days a week at the track for a dollar an hour. In his later teens and early 20s, he worked as a concrete laborer and on construction crews. Bill respected people who put in a full day of work. He was not impressed by titles or flash but rather by a person’s willingness to work hard and get the job done. In 1959 Bill went off to Campion Jesuit High School, a boarding school in Praire du Chien, WI. He fondly recalled his four years of high school at Campion and thrived in the structured environment. While at Campion, he worked in the mess hall, played football and hockey, and participated in theatrical performances. The stage helped Bill hone his craft for captivating an audience with his stories and wit. Bill followed a disciplined lifestyle he formed at Campion for the rest of his life.
Upon graduating from Campion in 1963, Bill had enough of the cold northern climates and hopped on a train for Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL. At Spring Hill, he majored in English, graduating in 1967. Bill married Anna Kolck of Dubuque, IA, in 1967 and moved to Chicago, where he enrolled in law school at DePaul University. This was a busy time for Bill. His first son William (Billy) Austin Kelly IV, was born on May 11, 1968. Bill juggled working as a juvenile probation officer during the day and going to law school at night. He graduated from DePaul in June 1971. In 1972 they moved with their son Billy to Galena. He went to work as a lawyer that same year with Nack, Richardson, & Nack. Soon after moving to Galena, Bill and Anna had their second child, Matthew John Kelly.
Bill often spoke of moving to Galena as one of the smartest things he ever did. He loved raising his family in such a beautiful town. While living in Galena for 50 years, Bill was involved in many activities, from being a volunteer firefighter to an Elks member to an assistant football coach for the Pirates. As a child, Bill watched a film with a Roman Emperor giving the “thumbs-up-thumbs-down” signal in the Colosseum, and he thought that looked like a pretty good gig. Seeing there weren’t many jobs available as a Roman Emperor, he became a Circuit Court judge instead. In 1990 Bill was elected Resident Circuit Judge and sworn in by his father, who had also become a judge. Bill presided as Circuit Court Judge for Jo Daviess County for 30 years. While on the bench, he loved the job and always spoke highly of the people who worked at the courthouse. He firmly believed all people should be treated fairly and respectfully in the courtroom.
Bill married Robin Lowery on October 25, 2000. From their home in the country, they enjoyed a quiet life. After a day in the courtroom, Bill loved to head out on the Mississippi River in a flatbottom, jet ski, or his 1963 houseboat, the “Mississippi Mermaid.” River rats could find Bill and Robin cruising up and down Dead Man’s Slough or relaxing at Kitto’s Point. Together they enjoyed going all out with Halloween costumes, paddling for dragon boat teams, and raising dogs.
Bill is survived by his wife, Robin Kelly, his two sons, Billy (Michelle) and Matt (Stephanie), his ex-wife Anna, his sister Diane (Tim), brothers Rick (Barb) and John, his step-brothers Guy Karm and Tim (Jamie) Kelly, many nephews and nieces, and his two grandchildren, William Austin Kelly V and Jocelyn Amber Kelly.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Chris Kouzmanoff and his brothers, Roger Kelly and Jimmy Kelly.
Bill’s family is grateful for the following: Hospice of Dubuque: Jessica Studtman, Melanie, Hayley, Morgan, Stephanie, and Pastor Diane. The team and staff at Midwest Medical Center: Dr. Matthew Gullone, Cory Fleege, and Cindy Kevern. Kathi Monroe with Heal to Thrive. Elite Plumbing and Norm Davis. Linda Ettleman. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 29th, 2022 at the Church of the Nativity with Fr. Andy Upah Officiating. Family and friends may gather after 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the church until time of mass. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa is assisting the family.
Due to unforeseen circumstances Ray’s visitation and Mass of Christian burial will be postponed until further notice. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd., Dubuque, IA is assisting the family.
Ray was born on October 30, 1939 to William and Frances Grant in a small house on the grounds of the Sister’s of the Presentation where his parents worked.
He went to Nativity grade school and graduated from Dubuque Senior High School. At a young age, he and his sister Madonna lost their parents within a year of each other, and Ray was thrust into the world to become self-sufficient. In 1961, he married the love of his life, Jeanne Triervieler, who remained by his side and held his hand until the end.
In 1963, Ray decided he wanted to operate the Lux Club, moved into the little house next door, and took over the tavern. He only operated the bar for a short time before selling it in 1974, understanding the values of raising a family versus the time and cost of running a bar. During that time Ray sponsored multiple championship teams, earning him a spot in the Softball Hall of Fame. Ray finally found his career at H&W where he dispatched for over 20 years until he retired. Ray was a diehard Chicago Bears fan and knew everything there was to know about Dubuque and the people in it.
Ray made a living out of serving others and calling drivers. After he retired, he called family and friends constantly and if you stopped by, the first thing he asked is what could he get for you. Ray enjoyed a competitive game of euchre, watching NASCAR or just sitting in the sun having a cigar.
Ray and Jeanne raised 3 kids, Sue (Dan) O’Hara, Bill (Kim) Grant, and John Grant. They have 6 grandchildren, Ryan O’Hara, Kaitlin (Nate) Fell, Molly (Alex Dress) O’Hara, Sam Grant, Mike Grant and Olivia Grant and 4 great-grandchildren, Jack O’Hara, Tommy Fell, Ben Fell and Nora Fell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws Marguerite and Bill Triervieler, sister and brother-in-law Madonna and Richard Burds, nephew Rich Ready, and his son John.
Ray’s family would like to thank the angels of Hospice of Dubuque and all of his doctors and caregivers. (YTL!).

Dick was a great provider for his family and worked in law enforcement with Dubuque County for 12-14 years, as well as being a self employed truck driver for over 30 years. When he wasn’t working Dick enjoyed taking on remodeling projects and learning new things on his computer. He also liked shooting and reloading with Jean and the family, watching Westerns and music shows on TV. His faith was very important in Dick’s life and he recited the Rosary regularly. Above all, Dick loved his family and spending time with Jean, the children and grandchildren brought him great joy!

Adair I. Wuthrich
Heaven gained an angel on Dec. 10, 2022: Adair Irene (Kellenberger) Wuthrich, 88, of Galena, IL. She was born April 14, 1934 in Elgin, IL., the daughter of Ernest and Matilda (Metzger) Kellenberger. Adair graduated from Morris High School in Morris, MN in 1952.
Adair married Charles (Chuck) Wuthrich on Nov. 7, 1953 in Morris, MN.
Adair and Chuck began their married life in Elgin, IL. In 1964, they formed the Aqua-Camper Corp. to manufacture houseboats with their business partner Rollie Kinsinger (Chuck’s cousin). Wanting to be closer to the Mississippi River, they moved their family and business to Galena, IL., in 1972. Wonderful memories were made boating on the Mississippi River with family and friends. Adair was also employed for many years at Chestnut Mountain and the Bee Hive.
Adair loved relaxing at home on her back deck looking out over the valley watching the wildlife and feeding her birds. She also enjoyed sitting around a bonfire, setting up her Department 56 Christmas village, and kicking off fondue dinner parties with wine and cocktails. She cherished traveling with Chuck all over the United States in their RV, especially time spent in Florida and California with her siblings.
Adair was an avid reader of mystery and suspense books. She loved cheering for the Chicago Bears; watching Hallmark shows and James Bond movies; playing cards with close friends; keeping up on current news; and listening to Neil Diamond, Barbara Streisand, and the Bee Gees.
She enjoyed margarita Wednesdays with friends; conversations over cake, coffee, and homemade ice cream at Prestwick; spending time with her special friends Rosie and Carol; meeting with her fellow TOPS members; and getting together with her large, loving, extended family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandma, and great grandma. Adair always ended conversations with ‘I love you.’
Adair will be dearly missed by her three children, Diane (Kevin) Gross of Nevada City, CA; Linda (Ron) Winter of Galena, IL; and Dan (Kim Jordan) Wuthrich of Maple Park, IL; eight grandchildren, Kari, Nick, Michelle, Nate, Luke, Zack, Sam, and Katie; and six great-grandchildren, Avery, Ryan, Cameron, Lachlan, Lincoln, and Savanna.
She is survived by her siblings: Shirley (Noah, deceased) Nohl of MN, Jean (Bob, deceased) Scheitlin of IL, Ernie (Carol) Kellenberger of IL, John (Kathy) Kellenberger of FL, Sharon (Bill) Carlson of ID, Charlie (Ingrid) of FL, Tom (Terri) Kellenberger of MN, Mark Kellenberger of NC, and Lorna (Dale) Erickson of MN. She was preceded in death by her husband Chuck Wuthrich, her parents Ernie and Tillie (Metzger) Kellenberger, her father-in-law Alex and mother-in-law Katie (Strahm) Wuthrich, her siblings Richard Kellenberger and Joan (Kellenberger) Knoblock, and Chuck’s sister Julie (Jim) Messner.
Special thanks to Dr. Koenigs and Dr. Vandigo of Medical Associates, and the nurses at Midwest Medical Center.
To honor Adair’s memory, we will hold a celebration of life on April 15, 2023 in Galena, IL. We invite anyone who knew her to join us.
