Donald J. Koopmann

Donald J. Koopmann, 82, of Peosta, died Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at the MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center in Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm Sunday, July 16, 2023 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Don will be 10:00 am Monday, July 17, 2023, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Peosta with Father Michael Schueller as the Celebrant.  Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque. Full military honors will be rendered by the Iowa Army National Guard.

Donald was born June 17, 1941, in Dyersville, IA, the son of Alfred L. and Evelyn Kruse Koopmann. He graduated from St. Boniface High School, New Vienna, IA in 1959 and then enlisted in Iowa Army National Guard. Following his time in the National Guard, he began a 35 year career at John Deere Dubuque Works, where he retired from on Nov. 1, 2000. His favorite assignment was driving tractors in the shipping yard.

Don grew up on his family’s farm in New Vienna, so he was used to early morning hours and hard work.  He carried that with him through the rest of his life.  He liked to stay busy around the house with lawn mowing, shoveling and car washing often helping his neighbors and friends.

Don put the same amount of energy into his family and friends.  He had many lifelong friends and constantly made new ones, especially during the winter months they spent in Florida.  He was a lifelong jokester and receiver of many pranks. Don enjoyed water and snow skiing, fishing, playing cards, golfing, and rooting for the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes. He found a love of biking after retirement and enjoyed training rides with friends and several years of RAGBRAI.  Don, to date, took daily 5-mile walks in the neighborhood stopping along the way to visit.

On February 4, 1967, he married Sandra Mary Tilp in Dubuque. Don, Sandy and their daughters spent summers with close family friends on the Mississippi, at Delhi, the Ozarks and traveling the United States and Canada. So, so many special memories were created throughout the years.

Don took an active role as husband, father, and grandfather.  He helped around the house, often cooking supper when both he and Sandy worked since he got home first. After supper they would have a lively discussion about who got to do the dishes rather than who got to sit down and relax. He was a proud and protective father of his daughters all throughout his life.  They knew he would come to the rescue when they needed help or just his shoulder to cry on.  He took care of things.

The grandchildren were the light of his life. He carried them on his shoulders, helped feed, diaper, teach and played with them. Just recently he told his grandson that none of his grandchildren will ever pay for a meal if he is around. Once, while his daughter was ill and son-in-law was away for work, he took care of the three young grandchildren at their house.  He had scheduled phone calls once a week with his youngest granddaughter to this day.

Don lived and loved fiercely without a moment to waste.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy; two daughters, Pam (Terry) Hinman of Iowa City, and Jolene (Rich) Finley of Johnston, IA; six grandchildren,  Lydia, Alexis, and Jack Hinman, Kyla and Austin Finley, and Jessica Greenfield; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Anthony (Eldora) Koopmann and Jim (Doris) Koopmann, both of Dyersville, IA; two sisters, Joyce (Mark) Westhoff of Petersburg, IA, and Mary Heims of Monticello, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother-in-law, Lloyd Heims.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Honor Flight of Dubuque and the Tri-States, Veterans Freedom Center, and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Peosta.

Roger J. Nemmers

Roger J. Nemmers, DDS, 94, died on July 7, 2023,  at Luther Manor.  There will be a brief visitation at St. Joseph the Worker Church at 9am,  Friday, July 14, 2023,  followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10AM, presided by Father Mark Ressler. Military rites will be accorded immediately following the Funeral Mass. The Funeral Mass will be livestreamed and can be viewed at www.egelhofsiegertcasper.com.

Roger was born on Feb, 5, 1929 in La Motte, Iowa, to Nicholas and Rose Beringer Nemmers. He graduated from Loras Academy and Loras College in Dubuque.  He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, being stationed in Japan. Roger married Elizabeth “Liz” Ulrich on June 27, 1956, at the Church of the Nativity, Dubuque. Upon graduating from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1959, Roger and Liz returned to Dubuque.  He practiced dentistry in Dubuque until he retired in 1995.

He was a life member of the American Dental Association, past president of Dubuque District Dental Society, and past member of Dubuque Golf and Country Club.

Roger was a White Sox fan and an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.  He loved to listen to Gary Dolphin broadcast the Hawkeye games. In his younger years, he enjoyed a good game of golf and working in his yard.

Roger is survived by his 5 children: Nancy (Jim) Rhomberg of Dubuque; Carol (Dr. Scott) Peters of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Connie (Jim) White of New Vienna, Iowa; Dr. Jim (Jodi) Nemmers of Dubuque; and Sara (Kent) Sodawasser of Marion , Iowa. He was very proud of his 14 grandchildren: Kate (Marty) Barrett, Nick (Lacy) Rhomberg, Michael Rhomberg; Matt and Megan Peters; Rob (Lauren) White, Drs. Scott (Brittany) White, and Judd White;  Drs. Peter (Claire) Nemmers, Dr. Nick Nemmers and Jacob Nemmers; David, Andrew, and Rachel Sodawasser. Also, his 6 great-grandchildren: CJ and William Barrett; Maddie and James Rhomberg; Sloane Nemmers, and Alexander White.

He is also survived by his sister, Carol Bertsch of Omaha, Nebraska, and many nieces and nephews.

Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Liz ,on Oct. 24, 2021; his parents; parents in law, Judson and Frances (Cremer) Ulrich. Also his siblings and spouses: Ruth and Dr. Stanley Miroyiannis, Glenn and Mary Nemmers, Harriet and Dr. James McKay, Joan and AJ Gerken, and Bob Bertsch.

Memorials may be given to St. Joseph the Worker Church or Holy Family Catholic Schools.   The family requests no flowers.  His family would like to thank Dr. Mark Moore, Hospice of Dubuque, and the staff at Oak Park Place and Luther Manor, for all their compassionate care of Roger.

Betty Lou Brummer

Betty Lou Brummer, age 80, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of Ida Grove, IA, completed her earthly journey on June 30, 2023, at Bethany Home in Dubuque while surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Betty’s life, a private family service is being held.  Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery in Ida Grove, IA.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Betty’s family.

Betty was born on February 26, 1943, in Riceville, IA, a daughter to Leighton and Leona (Humphrey) Zobel.  She grew up with an intrinsic love for family and friends and proudly carried this trait throughout her entire life.  After high school, Betty earned her cosmetology degree and spent almost 10 years in the field before eventually moving into retail.  She enjoyed many years working with her friends at Pamida and spent her final years as an assistant manager at Casey’s before finally moving into retirement.  She was blessed to meet the love of her life, Kenneth Brummer and the couple was united in marriage in 1963.  They were blessed with three children of their own, along with 27 wonderful years together before Kenneth was called home ahead of her in 1990.  Betty was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove  and was also a proud member of the Red Hat Society.  In her free-time, Betty always enjoyed spending time in the garden.  She also possessed an adventurous streak which was quenched yearly with her girls trips with her sisters and nieces.  They traveled extensively and always found a new experience to add to their resumes on each trip.  Betty was a kind and loving soul who truly strived to leave a positive imprint on the world around her. Her legacy will live on vividly within the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved her and we only pray now that her eternal reunion with her husband, children, and other family members who have been awaiting her arrival has been a glorious one.  Thank you, Betty, for living a life you can surely be proud of and may the Lord keep you safe in His loving and grace-filled arms until we all meet again.

Betty’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Bethany Home and Hospice of Dubuque for all of their professional and compassionate care of Betty, and her family.  Your tenderness and support have truly helped to bring a little peace into these very difficult days and for that we are eternally thankful.

Lynn A. Nissen

Lynn A. Nissen, 79, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, June 30, 2023, surrounded by her family at her home.

Lynn Ann Dreessen was born on January 6, 1944 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Jack Daniel and Nora Mae (Makinson) Dreessen.  She was a Maquoketa High School graduate.

She married Larrie L. Sagers on July 28, 1961 in Clinton, Iowa.  Three daughters were born to this union, Rae, Rhonda, and Kelly.  She and Larrie later divorced, and she married David Andrew Nissen on May 8, 1981 at the United Church of Christ in Maquoketa.

Lynn had worked at Jackson State Bank in Maquoketa for several years.  She ran the Hawkeye State Bank in Delmar for 23 years as the branch manager until it closed.  She then went to Dutrac in Maquoketa until retiring from banking.  She also worked as a bartender at the Eagles Club in Maquoketa for a few years.

Lynn enjoyed kayaking, fishing, camping, golf at Coon Hunters Lodge, deer hunting, bowling, dancing, Sunday football with the gang and drinking beer. She dearly loved and enjoyed her family and friends.

Those left to honor her memory include her lifelong best friend, Sandy Shollenberger; her children, Rae (Greg Schmitz) Simonin of Baldwin, IA, Rhonda (Jack) Hulsebus of Maquoketa, IA, and Kelly (John) Cavanagh of Maquoketa, IA; 8 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Jack “Tiff” Dreessen, and her husband David Nissen on March 18, 2023.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 6 P.M., Thursday, July 20, 2023, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 3 P.M. to 5:45 P.M. on Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home. A celebration of life reception will be held from 3 to 7 P.M., Friday, July 21, 2023, at the Timber Center in Maquoketa. A private burial will be held at a later date.

Richard L. Petrick

Richard L. “Rich” Petrick, age 78, of Dubuque, passed away at 12:47 a.m., on Friday, July 7, 2023, at Sunnycrest Manor. In keeping with his wishes there will not be any services. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street is assisting the family.

Rich was born on July 24, 1944, in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Rich went to school in Kenosha where he graduated from Kenosha High School. He worked at several places doing janitorial work and lastly worked as a security guard at A.Y. McDonald until his retirement. In his free time, he liked going camping with his friends at Camp H, sitting around the bonfire and spending the day at his favorite fishing hole. Rich was a very private man, but he will be missed by all of his friends at Ecumenical Towers.

Terry M. Denemark

Terry M. Denemark, 55, of Scotch Grove died Friday, June 30, 2023.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held from 2 – 6 pm on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello where a Memorial Service will commence at 6 pm.

Terry was born September 27, 1967, in Illinois, the son of Joseph and Barbara (Bruen) Denemark.  He attended Hinsdale Central High School in Illinois.  The family moved to Monticello and purchased Walnut Acres Campground.  He met Tammy Wilkins in 1995 and they married in 1997.  Terry worked at Energy Manufacturing in addition to helping out at the campground.

Terry enjoyed fishing, fireworks, racing of all kinds, Chicago sports, traveling to Okoboji and Branson or anywhere near water, and roller coasters.  Terry loved living in the country.

Terry is survived by his wife, Tammy, his son, Peyton, his mother, Barbara, all of Monticello, his brothers: Joseph (Terra), Denemark of Monticello and Brian (Bridgett) Denemark of Cascade, a brother-in-law, Chad Wilkins, of Altoona, and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, his parents-in-law, Bob and Louise Wilkins.

Peggy L. Stevens

Peggy L. Stevens, 79, of Baldwin, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at her home.

Peggy Le Clausen was born on September 13, 1943 in Preston, Iowa, to Harold Julius and Effie Henrietta (Jones) Clausen.  She grew up in the Preston and Goose Lake area and graduated from Goose Lake High School in 1961 where she was the Class Valedictorian.  Shortly after graduation, she married Larry Stevens.  Two children were born to this union, Jane, and Mike.

Peggy had worked various jobs, including as a secretary for the Andrew Schools and Cascade Livestock.  For many years she had worked as the secretary and administrative assistant for Maquoketa Feeds, retiring in January of 2021.

Peggy was a member of the National Barrel Horse Association and had served as a longtime area 4-H leader.  She loved barrel racing and ran her last race in April of this year.  She also loved being a grandma to everyone.

Those left to honor her memory include a daughter, Jane (Ed) Butt of Maquoketa, IA; daughter-in-law, Kay Stevens of Bethany, MO; 2 grandchildren, Jyme Stevens, and Ben Butt; sisters, Fern Ackerman of Bellevue, IA, Charlotte (Curt) Pefferman of Clinton, IA, and Judy Soenksen of LeClaire, IA; and a sister-in-law, Mary Clausen of Clinton, IA.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Mike Stevens, brother Richard Clausen, and a sister Patsy Farrell.

A gathering of family and friends celebrating Peggy’s life will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  A private family prayer service will be held.  Cremation rites have been accorded.

Connie E. Fessler

Connie E. Fessler, 72, went to be with her heavenly Father, on May 14, 2023.  She passed away peacefully at home in Woolmarket, MS.  She was interred at Biloxi National Cemetery on May 23, 2023.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband William J (Bill) Fessler, sister Carol West of Gulfport, brother John Calloway (Carla) of Willis, TX, and sister-in-law Judy Calloway of Port Charlotte, FL, mother-in-law Betsy Fessler of Earlville, IA, brothers-in-law Don Fessler (Bev) of Dundee, IA, Bob Fessler of Ashland, NE, Jack Fessler (Ann) of Keosauqua, IA, Randy (Nicole) Dunkel, West DesMoines, IA, Chuck Fessler (Lisa) of Manchester, IA, sisters-in-law Ann Fessler of Durango, IA, Diane Aldrich of Manchester, IA, Karen Wulfkuehle of Dubuque, IA, Mary Jo Walhovd (Dana) of Lake Wales, FL, Donna Offerman (Dave) of Earlville, IA, Cindy Engelken (Doug) of Dyersville, IA and Karla Downs, (Jerry) of Strawberry Point, IA, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents Hubert and Elaine Calloway brother Jack Calloway, father-in-law Robert Fessler of Earlville IA, brothers-in-law Mike Fessler, Delbert Aldrich, Mike Wulfkuehle and sister-in-law Shari Dunkel, niece, Shelli Gray and nephew, Brian Fessler.

Connie was a nurse in the US Air Force.  She was the Director of Nursing at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS when she retired in 2002 after 26 years of service.

Connie was an avid reader and loved traveling.  During her military career, she could travel to many other countries.  In later years, she enjoyed traveling around the country in their motorhome.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Sunday, July 23, 2023, at the Earlville Community Center, 120 Northern Ave., Earlville, IA 52041 from 1-4 pm.

Matthew R. Baker

Matthew R. “Matt” Baker, 42, of Milan, Illinois, and formerly of Maquoketa, Iowa, died on Saturday morning, July 1, 2023, in Milan, Illinois from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Matthew Ray Baker was born on May 24, 1981 in Iowa City, Iowa, to Ronald Ray and Patricia Ann (Grunder) Baker.  He was a 2000 graduate of Maquoketa Community High School and then entered the military serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from March of 2002 until receiving an honorable discharge in 2006.  His service was a testament to his courage and selflessness. During his active military career, he served in Afghanistan, Fallujah, Iraq, Sri Lanka, Somalia, and lastly Baghdad, Iraq.   He assisted in operations with the cleanup of a Tsunami, the Battle of Fallujah, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Sweeney, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Unified Assurance Indonesia.  He was awarded numerous medals.

Upon returning home from his active-duty service, he worked at John Deere for several years. He attended Midwest Technical Institute in the Quad Cities where he received training in heating, cooling, and welding. Matt became a Welder Instructor at MTI. He then became self-employed working on dirt bikes, motorcycles, and side-by-sides.

Matt had a daughter, Kahlan Ray Baker with Erin Stephany.  Matt and Erin never married but always remained friends.

Matt enjoyed dirt biking, side-by-side riding, especially going with friends to Colorado and Michigan. He enjoyed flying remote control airplanes and watching action movies.

Those left to honor his memory include his daughter, Kahlan Ray Baker of Maquoketa, IA; his mother and father, Pat and Tony Todorich of Maquoketa, IA; his father, Ron Baker; sister, Cassie Baker of Bettendorf, IA; special friend, Sandy Thomson; and his loyal dog Castle.

A gathering of family and friends celebrating Matt’s life will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at the Timber Center in Maquoketa.  A prayer service with military rites will be held at 5:30 P.M.  Cremation rites have been accorded.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project to support PTSD.

Janet R. Schmitt

Janet R. Schmitt, 85, of Holy Cross, Iowa passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 3 – 7 p.m. on Friday, July 7, 2023 at Kramer Funeral Home in Holy Cross.  Visitation will continue at the funeral home from 9 – 10 a.m. prior to funeral mass.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Holy Cross with burial in the church cemetery.  Rev. Tyler Raymond will officiate.

Janet was born on September 26, 1937 in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Lawrence and Loretta (Hefel) Decker.  She married Donald R. Schmitt on November 26, 1960, in Balltown, Iowa.  Janet had a love for God, Family and Country.

Religion was important and she centered her life around it.  Janet was active in the Holy Cross Catholic Church. She served on the parish council and school board and sang for the Holy Cross Choir.  She valued Catholic education.  She attended St. Francis school in Balltown and St. Joseph Academy in Dubuque.  She often prayed to special saints.  After the birth of two sons, Janet prayed to Mary for a girl, promising that she would dress her in blue for two months to honor Mary.  A girl was born.  Janet always kept her promises.

Janet worked for Dubuque Pack as a secretary serving in the head office for Mr. Wahlert.  When she met Don, he said Janet was the prettiest girl he had ever seen.  After dating for five years, they were married in 1960 in Balltown, Iowa.  As a devoted wife and mother, she excelled in cooking, maintained a large garden, canned fruits and vegetables, and was a meticulous housekeeper.  She was supportive of her children being a den mother in cub scouts, attending school functions and baseball games, and giving constant encouragement.  She was proud of her grandchildren and was excited for the arrival of her first great-grandchild soon to be born, reminding us that the circle of life continues.

Janet had a lovely smile, in fact, she won a beauty contest in 1959 and was awarded a trip to New York City.  While there, she was selected to be a contestant on the “Price is Right” where she won a player piano.  Don and Janet enjoyed travel and family vacations.  History was important to them and they restored a former stagecoach stop built in 1849 as their home.  Known as Pin Oak, this property was founded in 1836, 10 years before Iowa became a state.  It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Donald; children: Jeff (Linda) Schmitt of Holy Cross, David (Wendy) Schmitt of Omaha, NE, and Lisa (Dan) Bowen of Kansas City, KS; grandchildren: Michael (Hali) Schmitt, Katelyn Schmitt, John Schmitt, Matt Schmitt, Danny Bowen, Nicole Schmitt, Nicholas Bowen, and Adam Schmitt; siblings: Joan (Les) Feldmann of Rickardsville, John Decker of Balltown, Larry (Trudy) Decker of Balltown, Kathy Koch of Worthington, and Ann (Andy) Baumann of Dubuque and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law, Chas and Bertha (Meyer) Schmitt; sister, June Decker in infancy; and brother-in-law, Steve Koch.

Janet is an example of a life well lived.  It is not hard to imagine Jesus welcoming her and saying, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Regina Ankrum

Regina (Jean) Ankrum of rural Hazel Green, WI, formerly of Dubuque and Maquoketa, Iowa passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2023 at The Finley Hospital in Dubuque.

Family and friends may call from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on SUNDAY, JULY 9, 2023 at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, IL., and from 9:30-10:15 a.m. on Monday at the church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. MONDAY, JULY 10, 2023 at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church in Dubuque, with Fr. Tom McDermott officiating.

September 7, 1929 in New Hampton, Iowa Regina was born to John and Annabelle (Deegan) Deluhery completing their family of 8 with brothers Francis, Dale and Donald and sisters, Isabel and Margorie. The family was finally reunited as Jean was the last to join them at the gates of heaven. During her 93 year earthly stay she grew up in Des Moines where she attended St Joseph’s Academy class of 1948.  On December 15, 1950 she married the love of her life, William (Bill) Ankrum at St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines to which the union was blessed with 2 daughters, Gail (JC) Bullock and Donna Ankrum. Bill preceded her in death on April 25, 1975.

Jean was a stay at home mom during the early years of her daughters lives and then worked various jobs as Bill’s employment took them from Des Moines to Monticello to Maquoketa, Iowa. Her final career choice as an in-home caregiver was the perfect fit for her nurturing nature.

Jean was a voracious reader of anything in print throughout her entire life. One of our errands this past week was to return the 9 library books she had read this month which lent itself well to her 2nd love for crossword puzzles. Even at 93 years old there were few obscure words that she didn’t know the definition of.

Among those that will miss her legendary story telling are 8 nephews (Tom, Ken and Mike Lanham, Steve and Chris Buck and John, Larry and Tim Deluhery) 7 nieces (Geralyn Gaes, Susan Hurlburt, Liz Ash, Mary Buck, Diane De la Cruz, and Ann and Kathleen Deluhery) and 4 daughters Jean adopted in her heart (Jan Leiser, Denise Zirkelbach, Denise Bren and Sandy King).

After a celebration of her life her final resting place will be beside her beloved husband, Bill at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Maquoketa.

Sheyanne L. Miceli

Sheyanne L. Miceli of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away at her home on June 25, 2023.

Sheyanne was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on August 28, 1982.  Sheyanne graduated with her Associates Degree in 2017 and celebrated with her mother Sharon(Shay) L. Jenkins, her brother Jason Miceli and family and her cousin Eddie Warden and Family in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

She is survived by her mother, Sharon(Shay) L. Jenkins; brother, Jason Miceli and his four children, Shay Miceli, Alexis Miceli, Kyler Miceli and Xaviar Miceli; grandmother, Lena M. Cameron and her biological father, Scott E. Cameron, all from Floral City, Florida; ex-husband, Jeremy Paige from Iowa, and half sister, Wandasue Baker from MA.

She loved all her cats very much.  Sheyanne will be missed very much by all her loved ones and friends.

Brenda G. Litka

Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel. Let us remember with thanksgiving what God has done through His servant Brenda.

Brenda Gay Tuomi Litka was given life by her creator and was born on April 11, 1953, the child of Dennis and Gwendolyn (Beatty) Tuomi. On July 2, 1953 she received the gift of Holy Baptism and became a child of God. On May 21, 1967 she publicly confessed her faith and was confirmed. She received the precious gift of the Lord’s life-giving body and blood. Brenda was united in holy marriage to Mark Litka on July 26, 1991 and blessed with 32 years of married life together. She was blessed with the gift of children, Austin and Nathanael, and grandchildren, Nyx and Leon. God blessed Brenda’s life with many special people as she served God in her vocations at home, church, work, and in the community. Finally, on July 3, 2023 God blessed Brenda with a holy death and took her home to rest in the arms of Jesus to await the resurrection of the dead.

Brenda is further survived by her siblings, Bruce, Neil, Tom, Pauline, Patrice, Debbie, Ruth, and Linda; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; nephew, Tom; brother-in-law, Dean; and sister-in-law, Michelle.

Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm Sunday, July 9, 2023 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Funeral Service for Brenda will be 10:00 am Monday, July 10, 2023, at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. Bob Weinhold officiating. Burial will be at the Asbury Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

Jesse Lee Freiburger, 41, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of Bellevue, passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, July 2, 2023.

Visitation will be from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday, July 6, 2023, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3860 Asbury Road.

A Celebration of Jesse’s Life for family and close friends will be 10:30 am Friday, July 7, 2023 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

Jesse was born March 29, 1982, the son of William and Julie (Roth) Freiburger. He graduated from Bellevue Public High School in 2000. Jesse then graduated from Loras College with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. He received his master’s in sports administration from American Public University and an administrative endorsement from Morningside University.  Jesse has been employed by the Dubuque Community School District for the past 18 years.  He started his career as a physical education teacher at Sageville Elementary, later advancing his career as a student needs facilitator at Roosevelt Middle School.  Ultimately, he achieved his goal this past year of becoming the Principal at Marshall Elementary.

Jesse was an avid sports fan and especially loved cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and Los Angeles Dodgers.  Above all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.  He loved his wife, and high school sweetheart, Heather with all his heart and his three kids were his pride and joy.  Anyone that crossed paths with Jesse knew immediately what a kind, selfless, caring person he was.  He had a contagious smile and the ability to make everyone feel like they were the most important person in the room.

He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.  Survivors include his wife Heather, children Landen, Hayden and Mason; his parents, Willie and Julie Freiburger; sister Jennie (TJ) Michels; brother Jared (Traci) Freiburger; father- and mother-in-law Keith and Dena Haxmeier; brothers-in-law Jamie (Kristy) Haxmeier and Spencer Haxmeier; sister-in-law Lyndsey (Doug) Palmer; nieces and nephews Alyx (Alex), Gage, Nash and Noa Rogan, Giana and Jace Michels, Brady, Natasha, Ashlyn and Brock Freiburger, Zoey, Maddie and Miley Haxmeier, Tyler, Lauren, Harper and Aspen Palmer; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Our family would like to thank Dr. Eric Engleman and the entire Medical Associates/Mercy health care team.

Ann C. Ginter Phillips

Ann C. Ginter Phillips, 97, of Dubuque, died Sunday, July 2, 2023, at the Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 10:30 am Thursday, July 6, 2023 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church – Dickeyville.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Ann will be 11:00 am Thursday, July 6, 2023, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church – Dickeyville with Father Bernie Rott as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Holy Ghost Cemetery in Dickeyville.

Ann was born Celica Anastasia Kirk on January 18, 1926, in Otter Creek, IA, the daughter of John and Edna (Hayes) Kirk.

In June of 1949, she married Wilfred B. Ginter, moved to Dickeyville, WI and together they had 10 children. On January 13, 1970 Wilfred was killed in a car accident.  On May 29, 1976 she married Leonard P. Phillips and they lived in Bankston Iowa until he died in 2000.

Ann loved her family and enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, canning, playing cards, travelling and shopping!  Christmas was one of her favorite holidays. She always looked forward to the annual Christmas cookie baking with her family.  They made thousands of cookies over the years that were shared throughout the holidays.  She especially loved sharing last years Christmas cookies throughout the next year.

Survivors include her children, Russell (Vickie) Ginter of Kieler, WI, Elaine (Dobie) Dobbratz of Lake Mills, WI, Bruce (Judy) Ginter of Mt. Horeb, WI, Jeneice (David) Haessig of Sarona, WI, Bill (Peggy) Ginter of Dubuque, IA, Lois Ginter of Rockford, IL, Marvin (Lori) Ginter of Epworth, IA, Teresa (Paul) Davis of Dubuque, IA; daughter-in-law, Debbie Ginter of Dubuque, IA; 15 Grandchildren, 19 Great Grandchildren; three sisters, Rita Strubel of Vallejo,CA, Mary (Nick) Wathier of Arvada,CO, Pat Even of Dubuque, IA; one brother, Chuck Kirk of Bellevue, IA; in-laws, Pat Kirk of Dubuque, IA, Mary Ellen Kirk of Maquoketa, IA; Leonard’s children and grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her former husbands, Wilfred Ginter and Leonard Phillips; her parents, father and mother-in-law, Edward and Louise Ginter;  two sons, Ken and Richard Ginter; three sisters, Dorothy (Walter) Traleau, Margaret (Elmer) Portz, Carmelita (Ed) Portz; six brothers,Francis “Bud” (Thelma) Kirk, John, Toby, Bertram, and James; four sisters-in-law, MaDonna Kirk, Edwina (Delvin) Lyster, Phyllis (Ed) Ernst, and Eileen (Andy) Steffen; four brothers-in-law, Joe Strubel, Clyde Even, Jim (Alverna) Lewis, and Bud (Pete) Ginter.

A special thank you to Stonehill Care Center staff, Hospice of Dubuque especially Jennifer and  her children, Bill and Teresa.
