Diane K. (Turner) Bonjour, 68, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of Kieler, WI, passed away on Monday, November 22, 2021 at Ennoble Manor Care Center in Dubuque.
A celebration of Diane’s life will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, IL.
Diane was born on January 16, 1953 in Dubuque, the daughter of Richard A. and Kathleen L. (Timmerman) Turner.
She was a graduate of Cuba City, WI, high school, the class of 1972. Diane was a CNA for over 22 years.
Surviving are three children, Tammy Jones, Larry M. Turner, and Ronald E. Turner; eight grandchildren; a brother, Richard Turner and god-daughter, Tina Coulson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard & Kathleen; and a brother, Scott E. Turner.

Larry C. Clark
Larry C. Clark, 77, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Monday morning, November 22, 2021, at his home.
At Peace Cremation Services have been provided by Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. No public services are planned at this time.
Larry Clell Clark was born on July 17, 1944 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Clell Carl and Mary Catherine (Eganhouse) Clark. He was a 1962 graduate of Maquoketa High School. He married Bonnie Jean Nabb on February 23, 1964 in Maquoketa, Iowa.
Larry had worked in the administrative department as a clerk for H & W Manufacturing Motor Express in Davenport for many years. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and bowling.
Larry is survived by his wife Bonnie Clark of Maquoketa, IA; a grandson, Kyle Clark of Chandler, AZ; and a brother, Garry (Nanci) Clark of Des Moines, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son Jeffrey Clell Clark on January 16, 2019.

Karen M. Atkins
Karen M. Atkins, 68, of Peosta, formerly of Dubuque, died Monday, November 22, 2021, at her home.
Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm Friday, November 26, 2021, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.
The Funeral Service for Karen will be 10:00 am Saturday, November 27, 2021, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory with * officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Key West.
Karen was born July 24, 1953, in Dubuque, the daughter of Raymond L. and Frances M. Kramer Schmitt. On March 3, 1972, she married Jeffrey D. Atkins at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dubuque. He died on August 3, 2014.
She attended Dubuque Senior, Wahlert High Schools, and was part of the first graduating class of Hempstead High School in 1971.
Karen loved cooking and baking; even designing and publishing a family cookbook with her sisters. She enjoyed family picnics, hiking, National Parks, especially Rocky Mountain National Park, and listening to music. She was a dedicated wife and mother taking care of her husband during his battle with dementia for many years.
Survivors include her children, Lisa Atkins of Dubuque and Greg (Heather) Atkins of Hazel Green, WI, and Dan (Kristi) Atkins of Peosta; her grandchildren Austin, Hannah and Abbey Gasper, Jacob Atkins, Nolan and Kameron Atkins; two brothers, Merle (Sherry) Schmitt of Asbury and Ralph (Lynn) Schmitt of Dubuque; five sisters, Mary Ann (Pete) Whelan of Lewisville, TX, Elaine (Boyd) Monaghen of Lewisville, TX, Donna (Frank) Toth of Allen, TX, Jane (Ron) Paisley of Asbury; and Sister, Judy (Terry) Timmerman of Hazel Green, WI; three sister-in-laws, Kathy (Brian) Downey of Davenport, IA, Linda Sandberg of Preston, MN, and Marsha Atkins of Davenport, IA.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and in-laws, Jesse and Mary Atkins.

Boomer James Gatena, 78, of Dubuque, passed away Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at Stonehill Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 27, 2021, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Dubuque. Rev. Steven Garner will officiate. Masks are requested for all attendees.

Mary E. Herrald
Mary Ellen Herrald, 74, of Dubuque, passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, November 18, 2021, at Bethany Home.
Visitation will be Saturday, November 27, from 9:00-11:00 A.M., with a funeral service at 11:30 followed by a light lunch at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home, 2659 JFK Road. Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery, Dyersville, IA, at approximately 2:00 P.M.
Mary was born on July 25, 1947, in Dubuque, the daughter of James and Dorothy (Kremer) Lammers. She married Raliegh D. Herrald on November 25, 1967, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on May 10, 2013.
Mary touched many lives. She was a talented seamstress and crafter who created beautiful handmade gifts for family and friends. She is often remembered for making Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls as well as quilts and craft projects for every season. Mary loved to laugh and was quick to share a smile and a helping hand. She made people feel loved and special every day of her life. Family gatherings were always celebrated with her beautiful food, desserts, and lots of laughter and love for all.
Mary graduated from Dubuque Senior High School, where she met her husband, Raliegh. True life partners, they volunteered and served their family and friends in the community through Scouting, church, and their careers. They owned the Wedding Embassy from 1979-1986, and Mary later became a customer service supervisor at Thermo Fisher Scientific.
She is survived by her children, Elizabeth (Scott) Putnam, of Dubuque, David (Kristine) Herrald, of Thornton, CO, and Christopher (Melissa) Herrald, of Dubuque; grandchildren, Paige and Kate Putnam, Audrey, Ellie, and Erin Herrald, and Bailey Herrald; and her sisters, Lois (Bill) Wagner, Sue (Mick) Mason, Jamie (Kurt) Kramer, Ruth (Mark) Huseman, and Dori (Bob) Edwards.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister, Margaret.

Duane R. Wienen
Duane Robert Wienen, 69 of Galena, IL passed away Monday November 22, 2021, at MercyOne, Dubuque, IA. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM, Saturday, November 27, 2021, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, where friends may call after 9:30 AM, until the time of service. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena.
He was born August 26, 1951, in Hazel Green, WI the son of Glenn and Gen (Sproule) Wienen. Duane graduated from Galena High School with the class of 1970. He was united in marriage to Debora Kay Brotzman on July 3, 1971, at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena and she preceded him death on September 10, 2009. Duane worked as a farmer most of his life until selling. He then began working at the Cuba City Feed Mill until ending his working career with his son in the concrete business. Duane enjoyed hunting, gator riding, and hanging out at his lodge with his family and friends enjoying a cold beer. He loved having his granddaughters beside him.
Duane is survived by his three children, Matt (Sandra) Wienen, Nikki (Matt) Soppe, and Jeff (Lori) Wienen, seven grandchildren, Kristen Guerrero and Sawyer Wienen, Stephanie and Abigail Soppe, Samantha, Alyssa, and Sara Wienen, a step grandson, Ryan (Andrea) Pregler, two great-grandchildren, Carmen and Ben Guerrero, his mother, Gen Wienen, two sisters, Doris (Bobby) Hahn and Diane Wand, two brothers-in-law, Mike (Cathy) Brotzman and Dave Hess, two sisters-in-law, Cindy Barry and Pam Brotzman and his many nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, his wife, his in laws, Glenn (Ruth) Brotzman, two sisters-in-law, Rose Hess, and Doris Niday.

Sr. Martha Ryder, BVM
Sister Martha Ryder, BVM (Briant), 94, of Mount Carmel Bluffs, 1160 Carmel Drive, Dubuque, Iowa, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2021.
Private funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 29, 2021. Virtual Sharing of Memories begins at 9:30 a.m., followed immediately by virtual visitation. Sister Martha ministered as chair and instructor in the physical science/physics department at Clarke University, Dubuque, Iowa. She also taught at Mater Dei HS/Prince of Peace College Preparatory in Clinton, Iowa, and The Immaculata HS in Chicago.
She was born on May 25, 1927, in St. Louis, to Frederick and Myrtle (Stockton) Ryder. She entered the BVM congregation Sept. 8, 1948, from St. Margaret of Scotland Parish, St. Louis. She professed first vows on March 19, 1951, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1956.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Bill. She is survived by the Sisters of Charity, BVM, with whom she shared life for 73 years.

Anne M. Smith
Anne M. (Burdt) Smith, age 70, of Cedar Rapids and formerly of Dubuque, passed away at 6:30 a.m., on Sunday, November 21, 2021, at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by her loving family. To celebrate Anne’s life, family and friends may visit from 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m., on Friday, November 26, 2021, at St. Columbkille’s Church, 1230 Rush Street. To honor Anne’s life, funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Columbkille’s Church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is assisting the family.
Anne was born on April 25, 1951, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of James and Mary (Goff) Burdt.
Anne was born and raised in Dubuque where she would reside for most of her life. She earned her Master’s Degree in Nursing and would put her education to good use helping the clients of Cozy Corner Adult Daycare for 10 years until her retirement. Caring for the elderly was her true calling in life. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, William Smith, on December 17, 1993, at St. Dominic’s Villa Chapel. They were truly blessed with 13 years of wedded bliss before he sadly passed away on August 28, 2007. Anne’s faith was extremely important to her. She was a long time member of St. Columbkille’s Church and was a Franciscan Associate of Mount St. Francis. In her free time, Anne enjoyed a little retail therapy, and any time she could find something special for the granddaughters she was thrilled. She liked to listen to music, especially Johnny Cash, and loved to go dancing. She also liked to keep up with current events by watching CNN, but was never one to say no to curling up and watching a good movie with the girls. Anne always took great pride in her appearance, she dressed for the occasion and her hair was always done just right. Her family was always her top priority. She encouraged everyone to continue their education and supported all of their endeavors. We are deeply saddened at losing such a wonderful woman in our daily lives. We are, however, thankful for all of the wonderful memories made and the life lessons she has taught us throughout the years.

Marcia Matters
Marcia Matters, 75, from Aroma Park, Illinois, passed away the evening of Saturday, November 20, 2021. She was surrounded by her children and others who loved her.
Marcia was the daughter of Max and Alice Smith and widow of Bill Matters. She is survived by her children Kim Larsen (Terry), Pat Murphy, and Jenn Matters, her brothers Lyle Smith (Leslie) and Max Smith (Julie), grandchildren Lacie Ramirez, Tricia Kooy, and Claire Murphy, and so many others who were touched by her life and her need to take care of people.
Marcia was a nurse for almost 40 years, completing her Bachelor’s Degree and Nurse Practitioner Master’s program later in life, then teaching nursing classes even into her retirement. She also found joy in creating practical, pretty things for her family – sewing clothes and crocheting blankets, baking, and more. Marcia was stubborn, independent, and had a dry sense of humor that she shared with those she loved – and loving her family was truly the core of who Marcia was as a person.

Karen was born September 9, 1965, in Independence, IA, the daughter of Albert and Patricia (Demkier) Roth. On June 22, 1991, she married Mike Johnson in Davenport.
She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1983 and earned her Bachelor’s degree from Marycrest College in Davenport.
Karen and Mike owned and operated Johnson Straight Chiropractic in Tulsa, OK for 25 years.
She enjoyed camping, boating, cooking, gardening and solving crossword puzzles. Karen also loved being with her grandson, nieces, nephews and kids in general. She was full of life and always wanted everyone to be happy and was never afraid to lend a helping hand.
Survivors include her husband, Mike of Kieler, WI; her parents, Albert & Patricia Roth of Dubuque; one sister, Linda See of Dubuque; two brothers, Kevin (Jill) Roth of Coralville, IA and Brian (Paige) Roth of Iowa City, IA; sister-in-law, Bambi Roth of Dubuque; step-daughter, Celeste (Brian) Frehner of Prairie Village, KS; grandson, Felix Frehner; nieces & nephews: Brandon See, Damian (Ashley) See, Andrew Roth, Jami (Zak) Williams, Erica & Corey Roth, Justin & Jayden Roth and great-nephews, Westin & Braxtin Williams; many aunts and uncles.
She is preceded in death by her grandparents and one brother, David Roth.

Tom F. Patterson of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on November 19, 2021, at Unity Point Hospital, Finley Hospital.

Thomas was born on May 12, 1938, in Washington, the son of Harry H. Patterson and Catherine Link. He married Patricia Peterson on December 12, 1959.
Thomas was employed for the City of Dubuque and retired after 35 years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and spending time with family.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughter Kim (Duane), sons, Lloyd (Paula), Dale (Dawn), Jim (Patty), grandchildren, Kari (Jeff), Mandy (Mike), Amber, Karen, Shyann, Shawna, Toni Jo, Jamie (Steven) and Jodi and 14 great grandchildren and 2 great- great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Tim, and granddaughter Ashly.

Vernon L. Cartmill
Vernon L. Cartmill, age 69, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully at 2:10 p.m., on Thursday, November 18, 2021, at his home surrounded by his loving granddaughter and friends. To honor Vernon’s life, private family services were held. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, is assisting the family. Burial will be at a later date in Linwood Cemetery.
Vernon was born on August 3, 1952, in Dubuque, Iowa, and was raised by James and Joyce (Waller) Cartmill.
Vernon was born in Dubuque and was raised in Hazel Green, Wisconsin. Later in life he moved to New York where he was employed as a fork truck driver. In 2011, he and his granddaughter returned to Dubuque. Vernon’s family meant the world to him, and he truly loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing cards with his friends and watched the Price is Right, Let’s Make a Deal and ID (Investigation Discovery) daily. Vernon also made sure that he kept up with current world events. Everyone who knew Vernon also knew of his love of hats, he was never without one. Vernon will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Joseph P. Sandman
Joseph Paul Sandman, 80, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 19, 2021, at home.
A private funeral service was held with burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Key West, Iowa and military honors by the Iowa Army Nation Guard. A mass will be held at St. Joseph Key West Catholic Church along with a celebration of life at a later date. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road is assisting the family.
Paul was born in Manchester, Iowa on August 25, 1941, the son of Martin and Laurien (Bergfeld) Sandman. He graduated from Manchester High School and was a member of the Iowa Army National Guard for 4 years. He married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Goebel on September 16, 1961 and they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Paul was a mail carrier for 20 years and the owner of Schilling Hardware for 19 years. After retirement, he managed the Elks Lodge #297 for 11 years. He touched the hearts and lives of many people during his life. He had a great sense of humor, was quick with a joke, loved playing cards, and loved a good old fashion. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, building and fixing anything, the Iowa Hawkeyes, watching sports, and spending time with his family.
He was loved and is survived by his wife Carolyn (Goebel) Sandman, children Kathy (Kevin) Canfield, Kristi (Matt) Tompkins, Dave (Erin) Sandman, his grandchildren Rachael (Andy) Viehmann, Michael (Emily) Canfield, Jessica and Harrison Tompkins, Bailey and Bret Sandman, great grandchildren Caroline Canfield and Aubrey Viehmann, and sisters Alice Soppe and Dianne Faust.
He was preceded in death by his parents, great granddaughter Grace Viehmann, brother- in- law Bob Soppe, brother- in- law Dick Faust, and niece Jayne Swift.

Wayne was born on February 26, 1943 in Springbrook, Iowa to Lester and Dolores Kilburg. He spent his childhood on the family farm where he learned the value of hard work and a love for the outdoors. He attended Marquette High School in Bellevue, Iowa and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Dubuque. He married Pamela Ann Pauly on May 20, 1967, in Dubuque. Together they raised two boys, instilling in them his love of farming and dedication to hard work. Wayne was very proud of his boys and made sure they were supported no matter where life took them.

Steven W. Hilby
Steven William Hilby, 67, of Sun Lakes, Arizona passed away Friday, October 22, 2021 in Chandler, Arizona from the effects of COVID-19. Steve was born in Dubuque, Iowa on August 20, 1954 to Douglas and Bernadette (Berning) Hilby.
A celebration of life will be held on November 27 in the Gathering Space of Resurrection Church, 4300 Asbury Road, Dubuque, Iowa. Greeting the family will be from 10am until 11am. A Mass will follow with Father Gibbs celebrating.

Steve graduated from Wahlert Catholic High School, the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Iowa. He began his teaching career at Farley Bankston Catholic Grade School. He went on to teach at Shellsburg Community School where he met his future wife Cyndy. They were married in Dubuque, Iowa on August 4, 1984. The majority of Steve’s career was spent teaching in the Cedar Rapids Community School District.
Steve took great pride in bettering others. He served as an inspiring figure to students he taught, athletes he coached, people he worked with and anybody who spent time with him.
The Hilby family had many adventures together traveling to all 50 states and several foreign countries. Steve and Cyndy traveled frequently, attended concerts, professional and Hawkeye sporting events and hung out with many friends but their favorite activity was spending time with their children. He was very proud of Matt and Kate.
He is survived by his loving wife Cynthia (nee Tyler), his two children Matthew (Sarah) and Kathleen (Neal) Mullville, his parents Douglas and Bernadette, siblings James (Clara, dec.) Michael (Janet), Kevin (Diane), Cheryl Kuenster (Kevin), Patrice Brimeyer (Patrick), Lisa Urdahl (Kurt), Brian (Bridget), Charles (Anne), sister-in-law Kathleen Hughes (John) and his many extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his father-and mother-in-law Duane and Norma Tyler, his brother-in-law Robert Tyler, his parental grandparents Aloysius and Emma Berning and William and Vida Hilby.
May he rest in peace.
