Rodney James Bakke passed away on Saturday, October 12, at home surrounded by his family.

A prayer service will be held at 4:00 pm Friday October 18, 2024 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory followed by visitation until 7:00 pm. Visitation will also be held from 9:00 am until 9:45 am Saturday, October 19, 2024 at Church of the Resurrection.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Rodney will be 10:00 am Saturday, October 19, 2024 at Church of the Resurrection with Father Phil Gibbs as the Celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Elizabeth, IL at a later date.

Rod was born on October 15, 1937, to James Bakke and Lillian Haberman. Lillian later married his stepfather, Julius Haberman. He was the oldest of 7 children. He graduated from Lodi High School as Class President in 1955. Rod enjoyed his High School Reunions over the years and had recently attended his 69th High School reunion in August. He was determined to go, and he did just that.

Growing up, Rod loved attending the Ringling Bros Barnum and Bailey Circus in Madison and spending time at the family grocery store. He loved playing basketball and baseball.

Over the years, he cherished his time with his Wisconsin siblings and their families.

He received his Bachelor’s degree in Business and Master’s in Educational Guidance and Counseling at the University of UW-Platteville.

He married his former wife, Kay Ryan in 1957, and 3 boys were born to this union. Tom, Van and David. Some of the greatest memories they shared together were moments in Platteville, Wisconsin, centered around sports and Rod faithfully attended football, baseball and basketball games. He rarely missed a game and was always available to catch, shoot hoops or watch a game, especially the Wisconsin Badgers or Green Bay Packers. He attended the Ice Bowl with his son Tom in 1967 at Lambeau Field. He shared many stories of that day. The boys received the gardening gene from their dad and they have continued the admiration of flowers, lawn care and being around Mother Nature’s beauty.

Rod married his bride and love of his life, Mary Ann, on September 10, 1982 in Dubuque. They shared the same birthday, October 15. They had recently celebrated 42 years of marriage. They welcomed their daughter, Sarah, in 1983. He continued to be his children’s biggest supporters by watching Sarah in many musical and sporting events. He always gave her the very best advice and encouraged her to get involved as much as possible.

In Rod’s earlier career, he worked 10 years in the radio business in Poynette and Baraboo, Wisconsin, a field he became passionate about Junior year in High School after he was on a program, “Lodi on the Air.” Rod’s career then led him to Northeast Iowa Community College where he was key in the opening of the Peosta Campus. Rod worked there from 1977 until retirement in 1999. He devoted his passion of education in the areas of Admissions, Financial Aid and served as Development Director. He was inducted into the NICC Hall of Fame in 2014, receiving the Foundation Retiree Outstanding Service award. He was so very proud of this achievement. Rod helped organize the NICC Golf Outing which would benefit the Foundation.

After his retirement, Rod worked at the National River Museum & Aquarium, and then later as a volunteer. He enjoyed giving tours and welcoming groups.

Rod was deeply rooted in caring for and giving back to the communities in which he lived and loved at a young age. He helped the Platteville community by developing the Jaycee’s Park and organizing other community nonprofit events. He continued his enthusiasm for volunteering spending 32 years as a member of the Ambassadors of Dubuque. He enjoyed the ribbon cuttings greatly. He was involved in the Rotary Club for many years, serving as a former President. He also was on the Rescue Mission Board which filled his heart and yearning to help others. He served on the Holy Family School, Dubuque Five Flags, Dubuque County Fair, and Colts Drum and Bugle Corps Boards. Rod was a man of great faith and extremely involved at the Church of the Resurrection. He devoted his time and talents to the GREEN Team, Vocational and Social Justice Teams. The group in which he found some of his dearest friends was the Men’s M.E.S.S. group. These men were so very special to Rod and helped him in his yard when was unable to, and even built him a ramp. The bond they formed over the years filled his heart in many ways. He also had wonderful neighbors that would come over at any time to help him or have a chat. He was thankful for the Church Community and loved watching his wife Mary Ann sing in the choir.

Rod also spent many years assisting on political campaigns. He was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his absentee ballet.

Rod loved writing letters. The amount of letters Dad shared with others over the years was such a gift to many. Dad enjoyed gardening. He was so very proud of his garden and would bring his family, friends and local businesses beautiful bouquets. He was an expert in history, particularly WW2. He found such joy in attending church, community involvement, but above all spending time with his loved ones. He loved the holidays and celebrating traditions. He had many roles in life, but his most cherished role was “Grandpa.” He was very proud of all of his grandchildren. He enjoyed his opportunities to visit his grandchildren in Arkansas: Yumeko, Matthew, Melissa, Tyler and Logan and writing special letters to them too. He enjoyed following their academic, sports and other many accomplishments. Brooks and Jordyn were his youngest grandchildren, and he loved seeing them in their school masses, picking them up from school and spending time with them. He enjoyed helping Brooks with his homework and they would read together. He was his “little buddy” and Jordy lit up his days. He always shared with his family his love of reading and learning. He most recently enjoyed attending Brooks’ sporting events and watching Jordy’s gymnastic and dancing videos.

He loved special dates to the movies with Mary Ann and out to eat with his dear friends Kiefer’s, Herting’s and the Wick’s at Kalmes Breaktime. He had a great bond with his dear friends John and Joni Kubesh and cherished special memories with them.

Although our favorite guy had health issues over the last few years, he looked every challenge in the face and trusted in God. He worked so very hard at his Physical Therapy and left an impression on his many care givers.

Those who will continue to live on in Rod’s legacy include: Wife, Mary Ann of Dubuque, sons Tom (Sumako),of Greenbrier, Arkansas, their daughter Yumeko, Van (Alisha) of Bentonville Arkansas, their children Matthew Bakke (Ashleigh) and Melissa Pankey (Josh), David Bakke (Alana) of Maumelle, Arkansas, and their children Tyler and Logan, daughter, Sarah Helle (Justin) of Dubuque, their children Brooks and Jordyn, stepson, Stephen Jenkins (Maggie) of Madison, Wisconsin, their children Ida and Otis, siblings Rose Block (Carl) of New London, Bill (Diane) of Middleton, Wisconsin, Sue (Lenny) Klemmentz and Mary (Stan) Grob, both of Waunakee, Wisconsin, Grace (Larry) Kohn of Pardeeville, Wisconsin,  and Gordy Haberman of Oregon, Wisconsin. He was proceeded in death by his father, James Bakke, mother, Lillian Haberman and stepfather Julius Haberman.

He truly set a great example of how to honor people of all walks of life with his giving spirit.

He will be missed by so many, but his enormous heart will continue to guide our lives as we will move forward and so fondly remember him. To honor Rod, please always remember to stop and smell the flowers and write that hand-written note. A special thank you to Dr. Whalen and his team at Grand River Medical, Unity Point-Finley, Stonehill Communities Staff and Hospice of Dubuque who wrapped Rod in their care.

Fred L. Hoffman

Fred Lowell Hoffman, 71, of Alpharetta, Georgia, and formerly of Maquoketa Iowa, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at Piedmont Hospital of Atlanta.

Fred was born on March 13,1953 in Wauseon, Ohio, to Lowell and Anabelle Hoffman. When Fred was in the third grade, he moved with his family to Maquoketa, Iowa where he met a young girl and vowed to a classmate that it was she who he was going to marry someday. However, in ninth grade, the Hoffman family moved back to Ohio where Fred graduated from Bowling Green High School, excelled in basketball and became involved in student government. He then attended and graduated from Bowling Green State University with a degree in Public Relations and Political Science. He became a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and was an active member until his death.  One of Fred’s many gifts was his ability to keep in touch with friends, classmates, and acquaintances he had made connections with in his past.

Following college, Fred was the Director of Industrial Relations at Sheller-Globe Corporation, and then served 20 years as Vice President and Principal of Golder Associates. After this he was CHRO Global Chief Human Resources officer at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP and then became Principal at Ironwood Solutions.  In 2015 he began his final job experience as the Chief of Staff for Fulton County Commissioner Bob Ellis. Even though Fred was 71, he loved this job so much he was planning to work in that capacity for another four years. During his time with Fulton County, he also served as a member at large for the Clubhouse Atlanta organization which gives support to members of the community suffering from mental illness.

After being married previously for 32 years, Fred reconnected with and married Cynthia Ann Nissen who was the little girl he vowed to marry in the third grade. They married in 2009. Everyone who knew Fred and Cindy said they had a marriage that could never be duplicated. They shared everything and were everything to each other. Fred embraced Cindy’s family, and they fully embraced him. Even though they were only able to share 15 years of married life together, Fred made sure Cindy felt more loved than she had ever been before. He was a true romantic and always expressed his love and devotion to her.

Having lived in the metro Atlanta area for 47 years, Fred was a die-hard Georgia sports fan and supported his area teams like no one else. Fred loved the Falcons, the Hawks, the Braves, and especially, University of Georgia football. Fred was the Bulldogs’ number one fan, and he spent many years going to games, following stats, and cheering the Dawgs on with great enthusiasm. His loyalty and commitment to the Dawgs was truly unmatched. He also loved supporting the sports teams of his alma mater, Bowling Green State University. Another sport followed by Fred was racing, both Indy Car and Nascar. He had been to the Indianapolis 500 several times and planned on going again next year.

Fred not only had a passion for sports but also for US politics and history. Among his favorite political figures were former presidents Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy as well as Henry Kissinger.  He also greatly admired Patrick Henry and had named a guest room in his home “The Patrick Henry Room.”  Over the years, he collected many books, pictures, and other memorabilia related to these passions that his family will cherish for years to come. He was very patriotic, and his favorite rendition of the National Anthem was the one sung by Whitney Houston.

Those left to honor Fred’s memory are his beloved wife Cynthia, of Alpharetta, GA; his children, son Brandon Hoffman of Johns Creek, GA, stepdaughter Nicole Plaskon of Marion, VA, stepson Brandon Plaskon of Alpharetta GA; two grandchildren, Natalie and Owen Freeman of Marion, VA; sister Sharon (Darrel) Rettig of Dallas, TX; brother-in-law Chris (Mara) Nissen of Maquoketa, IA. Robert was a hard-working man. He farmed with his family in Otter Creek, IA after his father’s unexpected death in 1964. He worked for many farmers and mill jobs over the years. Robert retired from Addoco Inc in 2010 at the age of 70. His family was his world. He didn’t say much but what he said spoke volumes. He demonstrated a strong work ethic throughout his life and undoubtedly instilled that in all of his children. The kids have many memories of stacking and cutting wood. They learned how to drive a stick in the 1964 GMC truck and helped him work with area farmers in the fields and baling hay. He was proud of his apple trees and garden produce and would share with many neighbors and family. He would even kid his brother-in-law Gary who had the better tomatoes.

Robert taught his kids to appreciate nature and to hunt, fish, and trap.  The family would fish for bullheads at the Maquoketa Dam or take fishing trips to Minnesota with their Grandparents coming along. Robert and Charlene hosted the Fourth of July in LaMotte for many years. Dad would have the coolers all lined up outside on the porch with all the decorations ready. The day always included playing pool, cards, and visiting. At Christmas time, Robert would have Christmas lights hung all over the yard. The kids kidded him they were the Griswold Family!

Robert married the love of his life, Charlene Pancratz on Sept.10, 1966, at St Joseph the Prairie Church. They met at the KC Hall in LaMotte.  Charlene always said Bob swept her off her feet with his smooth dance moves. Together they had 7 children and built a life of love, faith, and family.  Robert had profound hearing loss. In 2013, he received a cochlear implant that changed his life. He could hear his sweet grandchildren’s voices and have conversations that he never had before. We hope you are enjoying feeding the birds, visiting with family, growing the biggest pumpkins, and playing bingo or canasta in heaven. You earned your heavenly reward.

Walter M. Hodge

Walter M. “Butch” Hodge, 83, of Dubuque, passed away Friday, October 11, 2024, at MercyOne Medical Center.

Butch’s family will host a celebration gathering from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15, at The Lodge at the Dubuque Golf & Country Club, where Butch was a life-long member and avid golfer. Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory is entrusted with arrangements. Private burial will be at Linwood Cemetery.

Butch was born September 27, 1941 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Walter J. and Marjorie (Marsden) Hodge. He married Beverly Rae Smith on June 2, 1962. She preceded him in death on January 13, 2004.

As the second-generation owner of HODGE, Butch led the company from 1978 to 2003, guiding it from a modest beginning with just ten team members and laying the foundation for growth.

HODGE was founded in 1958 by Butch’s father, Walter J., and it saw tremendous growth under the leadership of Butch and his late wife, Bev. Their commitment to putting employees first and supporting the community – through both good times and challenging ones – left an indelible mark.  This legacy of philanthropy is one that Butch instilled in his three sons, who have, in turn, passed it on to the fourth generation. Butch’s leadership was characterized by an eagerness to grow and evolve the business. Under his guidance and in collaboration with his sons Tim and Mike, HODGE not only supported Dubuque Pack but also became a key supplier for John Deere.

Reflecting on Butch’s leadership, long-time team member Ding Bell recalls, “Butch was pretty laid back, but he always wanted to get the work done. He was a good listener and treated people fairly. He was great to work with.”

Butch also saw potential where others might not have. His ability to connect with people, whether during a game of golf or in the warehouse, built lasting relationships.

Butch is survived by his partner of 18 years, Karen Jertson and her family; three sons, Tim (Connie) Hodge, Mike (Annette Hall) Hodge, all of Dubuque, and Lt. Col. (Ret.) Matt (Karee) Hodge, of Eldridge, IA; his grandchildren, Zach (Laura) Hodge, Jordan (Michael) Fullan, Lucas Hodge, Jacob (Hannah Kilburg) Hodge, Katelyn (Mitchel) McDermott, Grant Hodge, and Anna Hodge; his great grandchildren (who referred to him as “Grandpa the Great”), Oliver and Eben Hodge, and Maverick and Finley Fullan; and his sister, Rita Hodge, of Dubuque.

In addition to his wife, Butch was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Suzanne O’Brien; and his brother, Steve Hodge.

Butch’s family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at MercyOne and Medical Associates for their care of Butch.

The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be made to the Beverly R. Hodge Fund for Dubuque Public Schools (CLICK HERE or linked in his obituary on the funeral home website).

Butch taught his sons to play by three rules: 1. Tuck In Your Shirt, 2. Play Fast,  3. Count ‘Em All.
