Deacon James J. Thill Sr.

Deacon James J. Thill Sr., 82, of Dubuque, died Sunday, April 6, 2025, at the Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.

Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until 7:30 pm Thursday, April 10, 2025 at Holy Spirit Parish – Sacred Heart Catholic Church where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 pm.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Deacon Jim will be 10:00 am Friday, April 11, 2025, at Holy Spirit Parish – Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Archbishop Thomas Zinkula as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.

James was born January 3, 1943, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Gerald  and Marjorie Apel Thill. He attended grade school at Sacred Heart and graduated from Wahlert High School. He attended multiple Continuing Education Sessions and Conferences at the University of Notre Dame. As a teenager and into middle age, he enjoyed playing softball in city recreation league, handball, sandlot basketball and soccer, golfing, and bowling. He played the guitar for about 30 years. As a young teenager, he went to work at Bassler’s Shoe Store for eight years and then worked for 39 years as a journeyman meat cutter in the retail market at the “Pack”. He was a member and leader in the United Food and Commercial Works Union Local 431.

Jim was a life-long member of Holy Spirit Parish and a member of the Holy Name Society (men’s club). On September 15, 1962, he married Sandra Jones in Sacred Heart Church and devoted his life to his marriage and his family. He confided in a few close confidants, “If I fail as a husband and a father, nothing else really matters.” Strong believers in Catholic School education, Jim and Sandy graduated all their children from Wahlert High School. Sandy preceded him in death on September 5, 2016. They were among the founding members and leaders of the Living Word Catholic Charismatic Pray Group for 55 years. In Charismatic Renewal, he served on the National Advisory Council to the National Service Committee for 24 years and was a member of multiple Conference Leadership Teams at conferences throughout the United States in those years. In 1990, he attended, by invitation only representing the United States, a nine day conference on The Holy Spirit and Evangelization in Rome, Italy. He was very active in Christian Experience Weekends for a long time. In 2007, he received the duty to God Award for helping further the mission of Scouting in the Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 510. He was a member of the ad hoc committee that developed the Directory for the Permanent Diaconate in the Archdiocese of Dubuque. He was a speaker at conferences, days of renewal, evenings of renewal, study clubs and facilitated bible sharing groups and bible study groups over the years. He developed and led a Confirmation Preparation Program in the parish. He served on various committees in the parish: liturgy committee, evangelization committee, parish life committee, and pastoral council. He began full-time service in the parish in 2000 as a Pastoral Associate. He found great joy in visiting the classrooms at Holy Ghost School. On October 22, 2005, he was ordained a permanent deacon for the Archdiocese of Dubuque and since then has been assigned ministry in Holy Spirit Parish, Dubuque. He was a strong encourager…wanting to activate and animate the lay faithful in their roles of service.

He often said, “The most profound thing that could be said of someone is that they were a person of faith, family, and friends.” He tried to live his life according to that belief. He used to think you had to go somewhere to do some big thing to experience the glory and kingdom of God but he discovered that puttzing around the garage with his son, dad-daughter date nights, trying to teach his kids how to ski, his kids concerts, choir programs, recitals and plays, family picnics and gatherings, weekly date nights with Sandy, and things like this is where the kingdom of God and the glory of God is found and can be readily seen. Jim and Sandy’s family celebrations of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter, as well as other holidays were celebrations of the glory of God found in their family.

Survivors include his three children, James (Jennifer) Thill, Jr., Kelly LeGrand, and Renee (Harold) Benedict, all of Dubuque, IA; 12 grandchildren, Lisa (Steve) McGrath, Caitlynn (Alex) Helbing, Jacob Thill, Sadie Thill, Wyatt Thill, Lucas (Morgan) LeGrand, Travis (Jaidyn Behrle) LeGrand, Trenton Wolbers, Heather (Jharid) Minor, Alisha (Charles Rubio) Weis, Zshawn Weis, and Malysa (Darren) Hanson; ten great-grandchildren, Collin and Maxwell McGrath, Leo and Lincoln Helbing, Crew and Coen LeGrand, Nicholas Ray LeGrand, and Maialyn and Charles Rubio, and Zshawn Luke Weis; one son-in-law, Curtis Wolbers of Eldridge, IA; his four siblings, Thomas (Diane) Thill of Dubuque, Barbara Jungk of Houston, TX, Dennis Thill, and Gary (Lory) Thill, all of Dubuque; and in-laws, Barbara Fecker and Susan Jones of Dubuque, Steve Jones of Maquoketa, and Jean Jones of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Roberta Wolbers, two grandsons, Nicholas LeGrand and Hunter Thill, his parents, his father- and mother-in-law, Robert Sr. and Mildred Jones, two sisters-in-law, Judith (Delbert) Bischoff, Joyce Thill, and three brothers-in-law, Ronald Jones, Joseph Fecker, and Robert Jones Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Deacon James J. Thill Sr. Memorial Fund.

The family would like to thank the priests, staff, and people of Holy Spirit Parish and the Diaconate Community for your love and compassion.

Daniel J. Meyer

Daniel J. Meyer, age 69, of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey suddenly on April 3, 2025, at home.  To honor Daniel’s life, a private family service is being held.  Entombment will be in the Mt. Calvary Mausoleum in Dubuque.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Daniel’s family.

Daniel was born on February 18, 1956, in Dubuque, IA, a son to Alfred “Buddha” and Mary “Dolly” (Becker) Meyer.  He was gifted with a kind and compassionate soul which he shared generously with everyone around him throughout his 69 years among us.  Daniel received his Bachelors Degree in Social Work from Loras College and went on to invest his time and talents with countless clients at the Gannon Center and Ecumenical Towers.  Daniel found great joy in helping others and never regretted a day when he was able to give so much more than he ever took.

Daniel possessed a strong work ethic, but he also understood that a successful and fulfilling life requires balance between work and home as well.  In his free-time, Daniel enjoyed traveling as much as possible.  Making regular trips to Disney in California and Chicago to catch a Cubs game were always on the top of his priorities, but truth be told, anywhere he had to venture to catch a great play or musical were always a worthwhile and treasured adventure just the same.  Even making his way to Europe was considered time well spent and another amazing memory to add to his list.  Daniel was also a talented cook and baker and it was no secret to those in his inner circle that his cakes set the standard for edible perfection.

Daniel was also an amazing brother and uncle on every level.  His legendary role as California Santa brought more joy to the Christmas season than we could ever hope for and his epic Easter Egg Hunts still bring smiles to the faces of all who were graced by his devotion to others again and again.  Daniel could be described as an old soul by many who knew and loved him.  His ability to simply sit and have a conversation with anyone was truly uncanny.  The “Good Old Days” were really never too far away when Daniel was navigating the conversations ever so lightly.  His faith life was also a living example and whether attending daily mass, caring for his parents and others, making time for weekly visits to his canine companion, Zuzu, or just being the love and light someone needed in their day; Daniel was always ready to share his empathetic heart with everyone and anyone who made their way into his day.  It’s with broken hearts that we say farewell for now to our beloved brother and uncle, but we trust that he is now enjoying his eternal reunion with all who have been called home ahead of us and know that the perfect love he is experiencing today is truly no comparison to the health battles he was facing daily while here with us.  Thank you, Daniel, for being the best version of you anyone could ever ask for and please know that we will miss your sincere and heartfelt smile each day we’re apart until we see you again.

Those left to cherish the memory of Daniel include,

his three sisters,
Kris (Jeff) Hamel,
Julie (Dave) Cummings,
and Tressa (Dennis) George, all of Dubuque, IA;

along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Cindy Meyer and Debra Baker; and his partner of 30 years, Beth English.

In lieu of flowers, a Daniel J. Meyer memorial fund has been established.

Steven J. Seippel

Steven J. Seippel, 53, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away peacefully on March 31 at MercyOne Medical Center, surrounded by family.

Steve was born on October 22, 1971 in Arizona the son of Peter Seippel and Patricia Kammerude.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sara Seippel; his children, Haley Seippel, Alyssa Seippel, Austin Howard (Emily), Kaitlyn Howard (Hampton); and his father, Pete Seippel (Cathie). He is also remembered by his nephew, Nick Fischer (Ariel); his niece, Samantha Seippel; and his grandchildren, Rory Jo, Wells Michael and grandson due June 2nd.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia, sister Cathie and nephew Brandon.

If a life is measured by how many it touches around it, then Steve had the longest most memorable life there was to have. He was always looking for someone to be of service to and never once turned down someone asking for help. He was one of the rare larger than life people that became the gravity in a room full of people, whether it be making people laugh, telling a good hunting story, or his booming voice he was going to make you smile (or cringe depending on the joke and how many times he already told the story).

He was above all dedicated to his family, and to Steve it didn’t take much to be family. His life was a lesson for an open heart. His memory will not soon be forgotten by all the minds he lives in.

His family would like to say a very big thank you to the nursing staff at MercyOne who took exceptional care of him on his final days and the first responders who transported him to the hospital.

In lieu of flowers please donate to the Kids Hunting Foundation.

According to his wishes no public visitation or service will be held. A Celebration of Steve’s Life will be held at a later date.
