Judy K. Hanken
Judy K. Hanken, 77, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on September 22, 2024, after a recent battle with Amyloidosis and Multiple Myeloma. Her family surrounded her in her final moments.
Born on December 2, 1946, at the Anamosa Hospital to Leland and Geraldine Meineke, Judy grew up on a dairy farm near Solon. In 1963, her family moved to Springville, where she completed high school. During her time at Springville High, Judy enjoyed her studies, school dances, attending sporting events and playing the coronet in the school senior and pep bands.
In 1967, Judy moved to Maquoketa with her husband, Chris Hanken, and infant son when Chris began his teaching and coaching career at Maquoketa Community High School. Judy was a regular at hundreds of team and tournament wrestling events, cheering on the athletes and connecting with Cardinal sports fans.
The couple spent 25 years together, raising their two sons, Craig, who now lives in Des Moines, Iowa, and Josh (wife Donna), who resides in Maquoketa, Iowa. Though they later separated, Judy and Chris remained committed to their family.
Judy worked for 27 years at the USDA Farm Service Agency in Jackson County, Iowa. She was known for her strong work ethic and close relationships with colleagues and farmers. Judy was also involved with P.E.O. Sisterhood, serving in many roles and forming lasting friendships within the organization.
Judy loved socializing with her friends, whom she met through the teaching and golfing communities and her work, and they are still the closest, dear friends to the end—the time she spent with them brought her tremendous happiness and beautiful memories.
Her greatest joy, however, was her family. She loved working on sewing, crafting, or baking projects and spending time with her grandchildren—Kaitlyn, Taylor and Kale. A lifelong cat lover, Judy found joy in the companionship of her many feline friends through the years.
Preceded in death by her parents, Leland and Geraldine Meineke, Judy leaves behind her sons, Craig and Josh (wife Donna); her grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Taylor, and Kale; her sisters, Mary, Donna, and Diane; and many friends who will miss her deeply.
A gathering to celebrate Judy’s life will be hosted at Carson Celebration of Life Center on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, from 5-7 pm. Drinks and appetizers will be served, and all who knew Judy are invited to join in remembering her. No funeral services will be held.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Judy K. Hanken memorial fund has been established.
Judy’s love for her family, friends, PEO and animals will be remembered by those whose lives she touched.
Her family would like to recognize the excellent team of medical professionals on floor three of the Dubuque MercyOne Hospital. A caring and dedicated team of nurses and attendants helped make her time spent there as comfortable as possible.

Lois was born on July 30, 1947, in Dubuque, IA, a daughter to Lester and Marian (Bloush) Miller. Being blessed to meet the love of her life at an early age, Lois enjoyed a wonderful life and spent her 77 years among us being surrounded by those she truly loved. She spent her working career as an industrial registered nurse, investing her time and talents with both the Dubuque Pack and Flexsteel Industries. But, those who knew Lois best understood clearly that her heart really resided at home where her family was waiting patiently for her to return. In her free-time, Lois always enjoyed the challenge of her latest jigsaw puzzle, but also found time to perfect her crocheting skills when time allowed and never passed up an opportunity to venture out for a little thrifting whenever possible.
Known for her strength and resilience, Lois was a tough lady with a heart of gold, who inspired all who knew her. Lois was truly a wonderful grandma, taking her grandchildren on memorable family vacations, showering them with thoughtful presents for Christmas and birthdays, and ensuring they had everything they needed to feel loved and cherished. Lois guided those around her with her wisdom and insight instilling important values and encouraging those around her to strive for their best. Lois taught her family resilience and the importance of standing up for what is right. Whether she was offering advice, sharing a laugh, or providing a shoulder to lean on, she did so with an authenticity that drew people to her.
Lois possessed a deeply kind and loving soul throughout her life and the legacy and impact she has left on those around her will surely be felt and embraced for generations to come. Thank you, Lois, for simply being yourself within each day that presented itself and may you now feel the grace-filled arms of our Lord and Savior embracing you securely while we all wait to see your beautiful smile once again.

A lifelong Dubuquer, he was born at Finley Hospital to Dr. Julian Nemmers, Sr., DDS, and Ann Reger Nemmers in 1928. He was educated at Nativity School, Loras College, and the University of Iowa School of Medicine, graduating in 1953. Following medical school, he was proud to have served in the Air Force for over 2 years at Barksdale AFB in Shreveport, Louisiana, with the 301st Tactical Hospital. He completed a four-year residency in Orthopedic surgery at the Campbell Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee. Julian started his medical practice in Dubuque in 1960 in an office on Dodge Street. In 1961, he became a fellow in the Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and was the first residency trained, Board-certified orthopedic surgeon in Dubuque. He was indebted to the Academy for providing world-class continuing education in a period of rapid expansion of orthopedic surgery, including joint replacement and arthroscopic surgery. Julian founded Dubuque Orthopaedic Surgeons, P.C. in 1966. A decade later the office was relocated next to Finley Hospital on North Grandview Avenue.
Julian loved his profession and helping his patients. He served as President of the medical staff at Xavier and Mercy Hospitals, and past President of the Iowa Orthopedic Society. He was honored with an induction into the Finley Hospital Hall of Fame. Julian practiced orthopedic medicine for 39 years, retiring in 1999.
Julian married Genevieve Walsh in 1953 and had six children. While his medical practice kept him extremely busy, he was able to spend precious time with his family, raising and showing Appaloosa ponies with the Ponies of America (POA) Club for over 50 years. Known as “Doc” by his friends, he enjoyed traveling across the U.S. with his family showing their horses and connecting with other horse owners. He was honored with an induction into the Ponies of America Hall of Fame for his efforts to improve the breed.
In 1989 he married Ruth Ann Storms. They enjoyed raising horses, their ski trips to Colorado, and fishing trips in Canada and Alaska, as well as traveling to numerous European countries and China.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Ann; his parents; his sisters, Betty Kasel, Virginia Loes, and Charlotte Shanahan; a brother, Father Mark Nemmers; his first wife, Genevieve Nemmers; a daughter at birth, Mary Ann; and a nephew, Tony Loes.
He is survived by: Jacqueline Nemmers of Dubuque; Julian Nemmers II (wife Nancy and sons Ryan – partner Jina and daughter Adelynn, and Justin – wife Iliana and son Julian Bates) of Longmont, Colorado; Dr. Carolyn Nemmers of Barrington, Illinois; Catherine Nemmers, of Dubuque; Ellen Tuffy (husband Tim and daughters Genevieve and Evangeline), of Barrington, Illinois; and John Nemmers (wife Natalie and children Julian and Lauren) of Dubuque; a brother, Dr. David Nemmers, of Winfield, Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Julian and his family would like to thank the staff of Bethany Home for the exceptional care that he received. He also wished to thank his palliative care team, Hospice of Dubuque, and Dr. Ben Kumor. Memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque, Breakthrough T1D (formerly Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), or a veterans organization of your choice.
