Evelyn was born on July 16, 1930, in Tama County, Iowa, daughter of Orlyn and Velva (Willer) Ehlers.
Evelyn graduated from Dubuque Senior High School, Class of 1948. She married the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Reavell, on May 9, 1959, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. They celebrated almost 47 years of marriage before Dick sadly passed away on April 27, 2006. Evelyn was a devoted wife and mom. She loved kids, and worked as a Teacher’s Associate for children with special needs with the Dubuque Community School District for 22 years until her retirement. Some of the children she helped she was with from kindergarten all the way through high school. Her Catholic faith was very important to her, and she was a long time member of St. Anthony’s Church. Evelyn was very artistic and created beautiful cross stitch and embroidery pieces. She was a phenomenal cook and baker who had a schedule of what was baked on what day. She made delicious meals for the family and insisted on cleaning up all by herself after large family gatherings. Evelyn had a spunky attitude and was extremely active. She truly was ahead of her time, always doing what made her happy and not caring what others thought. Evelyn was a great role model and loved her family deeply. She will be greatly missed.

Liam W. Kenniker
Liam Wayne Kenniker, age 10, of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey on July 12, 2024, at home, while surrounded by his loving family. To honor Liam’s life, a private family Celebration of Life is being held. The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Liam’s family.
Liam was born on January 4, 2014, in Dubuque, IA, the oldest son to Jacob and Tara (Perry) Kenniker. He boldly arrived six weeks early into our world as the Lord simply could not wait to allow Liam to begin his personal ministry of changing the world around him one heart at a time. He was born with Nonketotic Hyperglycinemia (NKH) and from the very beginning Liam would courageously embrace and develop the strength necessary to face each new battle head on. All who knew and loved him understood quite clearly that each seizure could be the last moment Liam’s light would be shining so brightly.
He recently graduated from the 4th grade at Eisenhower and enjoyed going to school more than most children could appreciate. Whether he was spending his day in the wheelchair, or made it comfortably into his favorite bean bag chair, Liam was always ready to make the most of each day he was given. Many would say that Liam was nonverbal; but for those who knew him well, Liam was surely anything but. He may not have had the ability to use his words as we do, but there was no doubt that when he was not happy with the situation at hand, you would be quite aware of his discontentment and should promptly make the necessary moves to remedy this violation before any further penalties were incurred. And to witness the joy on his innocent and precious face when the Beatles were playing in the background, or SpongeBob was on the tv was all it took to know that some of the best moments in life are simply the ones which make others hearts sing. Liam would humbly live his life as offered and proving to be an inspiration to all who crossed his path was merely a side-effect in his eyes. He brought so much joy and love into this world with an almost effortless enthusiasm and always found the opportunities to show off his courage and inner fighter as just another chance to simply do what he did best; being Liam! There are surely times in this life where it’s difficult to see the hand of God working within our lives, but when He sends sweet souls like Liam into our world, it’s a true blessing to witness Him working all things for good for those who love Him and consequently reminding us that things are not always as they appear on the outside, but with a little deeper dig towards the truth we can see His ultimate love in a glorious and bold display. We will miss Liam more than we could ever accurately depict in mere words, but we are beyond blessed to have had him entrusted unto us for even the much too short 10 years we had and will now wait patiently to see him once again, and find comfort in knowing on our next visit, he will be residing in his state of eternal perfection, unencumbered by any of this mortal world’s imperfections. Thank you, Liam, for impacting this world to a greater level in your single decade than most lives could hope for in a century and may the Lord bless and keep you safe in His loving arms until we meet again. Job well done good and faithful servant…Job Well Done Liam!

There is no denying that Liam’s impact on the world around him has been immeasurable and life changing, but we also wanted you to know that your imprint on our lives has been priceless as well. Juliann E. Ungs
Juliann “Julie” E. Ungs, 91, of Luxemburg, Iowa, completed her earthly journey on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, surrounded by her loving family, at MercyOne Senior Care in Dyersville, Iowa.
Visitation for Julie will be on Monday, July 15, 2024 from 2 to 7 p.m. at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville, Iowa. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the funeral service.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church in Luxemburg, Iowa with Rev. Tyler Raymond presiding and Rev. Noah Diehm concelebrating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Luxemburg, Iowa.
Julie was born on January 24, 1933 in Luxemburg, Iowa, daughter of Mathias G. and Bertha (Oberbroeckling) Maiers. She grew up as the second youngest of nine children on the family farm, receiving her elementary education in Luxemburg and high school in New Vienna. On June 4, 1953, she was united in marriage to Edward N. Ungs at Holy Trinity Church in Luxemburg, Iowa. Ed preceded Julie in death on January 2, 2010.
After living and working in Dubuque after high school, Julie accompanied her new husband Ed, who was freshly graduated from Loras College and drafted as an accountant with the U.S Army, to Fort Knox, Kentucky and Indianapolis, Indiana. She worked as a civil employee for the Army as they started their life together. The young couple later moved back to Luxemburg, where Ed became U.S. Postmaster and worked with his father. Julie and Ed then purchased the family business, naming it Ungs Shopping Center, which continues as a family operation today.
In addition to raising her family and working at the store, Julie was engaged in her local communities through volunteering. She served on boards and committees with her parish and the Catholic school systems of the area, the Dyersville Hospital, the Dyersville Community Foundation and the Dyersville Health Foundation. As the years went on, she also worked “extra” jobs – catering with her dear friend Betty Wilgenbusch at the Avalon in Rickardsville, with Rosie Kruse and the Dyersville Country Club, and with Judy Woods at Fidelity Bank Five Star Club. She was a faithful member of Holy Trinity Parish in Luxemburg and of the Catholic Daughters of America, as well as the Hospital Auxiliary of Dyersville Hospital, which later became MercyOne.
Julie was a very social and fun-loving person. Her children would say she brought the party wherever she went. She had great friends and loved her house to be the gathering spot for family, friends and friends of family! She made sure there was always plenty of food and drinks, especially the “Ungs’ Manhattan” around the bar she and Ed built in their beloved home. She loved to travel with Ed, to attend her kids’ and grandkids’ sporting events, to have coffee with the Luxemburg ladies, and to go regularly to her “Gal’s Club” to weigh in and talk health and diet in Guttenberg (after which they would enjoy pancake breakfasts!) In her later years, she talked with her sister Pat every night after the news and the ball game on TV. She and Rosie Klein of Luxemburg had some great adventures, too, both widows, and sharing grandchildren from the union of their children, Mike and Rhonda. Julie took her faith and fun seriously. Praying the rosary – and occasional trips to the casino – were both favorite pastimes. She prayed the rosary with her children and grandchildren just hours before passing away.
Julie made community everywhere she lived. Her wonderful friends at MercyOne Senior Care, where she spent her last year, joined her for meals, card games, bingo, crafts and more. She loved her Senior Care pals: Nancy, Inez, Catherine – and the wonderful staff that cared for her.
Julie is survived by her six children: Mary (Jens Sogaard) Ungs-Sogaard of Dyersville, IA; Mike (Rhonda) Ungs of Luxemburg, IA; Susi (Randy) Jaeger of Swisher, IA; Shari (John) Greenwood of Peosta, IA; Steve (Jill) Ungs of Cedar Rapids, IA; Shelly (Jack) Harkins of Portage, WI. Julie also leaves behind to cherish her memory her 17 grandchildren Katrina (Joel) Anderson, Kirsten Sogaard, Abbie (Jeremy) Petsche, Leah (Adam) Krogman, Anna Ungs, Chloe (friend Michael Keegan,) Nic (Jeanne) Jaeger, Melissa (Troy) King, Kimberly (Matt) Arjes, Sara (Wes) Vorwald, Megan (Skyland Felch) Greenwood, Brian (Alissa) Greenwood,) Lisa Greenwood, Samantha Ungs, Alison (Sam) Hoeger, Sam (friend Kori Martens) and Lilly Harkins; 22 great-grandchildren, with one on the way: Axel, Orion, Hannah, Nolan, Reese, Luka, Asher, Landon, Grant, Grayson, Madelyn, Lincoln, Levi, Jack, Eivan, Noah, Liam, Ben, Evan, Everett, Porter, Penelope; her sisters Eldora Pfeiler Pins of Manchester, IA and Patricia Elliott of Madison, WI; her brother Merle (Verna) Maiers of Madison, WI.; her sister-in-law Joanne Ungs of Cedar Rapids, IA and many nieces and nephews.
Julie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her parents-in-law Edward and Rita (Lueken) Ungs; brothers Ralph (Grace), Jake (Norma), John (Frannie) and Jerome (Benedetta) Maiers; sister Vern (Ray) Lucas; brothers- and sisters-in-law Schim Elliott, Matt Pfeiler, Paul Pins, Shirley Hackett and Herb Ungs; her grandchildren Christian Sogaard and Rachel Ungs; and nieces and nephews also sorely missed.
Memorials may be directed to Holy Trinity Church in Luxemburg, IA for its new window project and air conditioning, or to the memorial fund for the family to disperse in Julie’s memory.
Julie’s family would like to extend a deep thanks to all who supported and cared for Julie, especially the staffs at MercyOne Senior Care, MercyOne Dyersville–Dubuque, doctors and staff of Medical Associates, Hospice of Dubuque and the Ellen Kennedy Center. Your wonderful care was remarkable, and so appreciated.

He was also on the Salvation Army Senior Center Board of Directors where he spent a lot of time teaching country dancing, playing dominos, attending parties and potlucks, and making many friends.
Some of his favorite things were country dancing until he was 86 years “young”, country music, dominos, gardening, flowers, feeding the birds, woodworking, reading his woodworking magazines, reading the newspaper front to finish, and gathering and cracking walnuts. He loved traveling and visited all 50 states.
Gene is survived by his wife Ruth, children Vern Motsch of Dubuque, Dave Motsch of Sagle, Idaho, and Virge (Mike) Engling of Dubuque, grandchildren Sheila, Andy, Emily, and Carissa, step-grandchildren Trevor and Will, great grandchildren Haley, Trystin, Taiya, Rowan, Myla, Sophia, and Maximus, brother Ernie Motsch, brothers-in-law Dale (Carol) Dieters and Gene Weidenbacher, sister-in-law Mary Dieters, Trudy (Deb’s beloved kitty we “adopted”), as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Deb on February 10, 2022, twin grandsons Jason and Josh in September of 1994, brother Herman (Ginny) Motsch, sister Mary (Arky) Hanson (’14), brothers-in-law Ken (’05), Cliff (’06), Maynard (’18), and Merle (’48), and sisters-in-law Eilene Weidenbacher (’06) and Edith Dieters.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Dubuque, especially Chris, Amy, Jessica, and Connie, Stonehill Communities staff, and Dr. Sara Loetscher for all the compassionate care and help given on Gene’s journey to the Lord. Also thank you to his granddaughter Sheila for the special care and attention shown to her grandpa and giving him three rides in his Toronado while at Stonehill.
In lieu of flowers, a Eugene “Gene” A. Motsch Memorial Fund has been established.

Richard J. Berthel
Richard J. Berthel, 67, of Chicago IL, formerly of Bellevue IA, passed away on July 2, 2024 at his home.
Funeral Mass will be 11:00 am, Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bellevue. Family will greet friends 9:00 am – 10:30 am prior to Mass at Hachmann-Mier Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue. Private Family burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Bellevue.
Richard was born on January 24th, 1957 and lovingly adopted by John and Phyllis Berthel. He was raised on the family farm outside of Springbrook, Iowa and graduated from Bellevue Community High School in 1975. Following high school, he completed electrical schooling and apprenticeship in Minnesota and returned home to work with several local electricians, including K&K Electric in Bellevue and with his cousins at Berthel Electric in Maquoketa. Rich eventually moved to Chicago to work as a union electrician and became a longstanding member of the I.B.E.W. Local #134. Chicago became Rich’s new home for almost 40 years…where he became an official “foodie”, an avid Bears and Cubs fan, and most importantly – where he met the love of his life, Sue Hart. Rich and Sue spent over 35 years together, and his heart was broken when she passed away in September 2021. Richard was also blessed with great friends in Chicago through the years, many of whom became a second family to him.
A gentle giant, a big teddy bear, and a kind soul are just a few of the phrases used to describe Rich. He also loved to read, had a remarkable memory, and enjoyed his trips back to Iowa to spend time with family. Richard will be buried in his final resting place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery with his sweetheart, Sue.
Richard is survived by his 6 siblings, who will forever miss their big brother: Mary Kay (Terry) Mueller, Paula (Bill) Lampe, Brian (Christina) Berthel, Angie (Shawn) Jackson, Keith (Angie) Berthel, Sue (Dan) Jacobs, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Phyllis Berthel, his beloved Sue Hart, and his nephew Colin Jackson.
