Roy O. Coker

Roy O. Coker, age 78, of Galena, IL, completed his earthly journey suddenly on December 28, 2024, at home with his loving wife by his side.  To honor Roy’s life, a private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Roy’s family.

Roy was born on December 26, 1946, in Claremore, OK, a son to Dempsey and Marie (Lockhart) Coker.  He eventually married his childhood friend and sweetheart, Joy Luton, in 1976, and the two have been inseparable ever since.  After spending much of their life on the high plains out west, Roy and Joy decided to make the move to Galena to spend the remainder of their years right on the edge of the Mississippi River enjoying all that God’s splendor had to offer while raising a family of their own.  Roy worked with the Gilpatrick Road Construction Company and at the Gas Hills Uranium Mine in Wyoming for many years, but spent the final years of his working career as an over-the-road truck driver for J.B. Hunt Transportation Services.

Roy always took great pride in his work, but also understood that a truly satisfying life required balance, so time to relax and enjoy quality time with his family was a continual priority in his life.  In his free-time, Roy could easily be found working on his next Nintendo challenge and often working the buttons on his tablet as fast as his fingers could go when time allowed.  Roy loved his family and his life very much and felt truly blessed to be able to live the good life just as he had wished and worked for.  We will miss Roy with all of our hearts and carry his legacy forward securely in our hearts and minds until we all meet again.  Thank you, Roy, for never neglecting your role as husband, father, and grandfather so diligently and may peace be yours today was you begin your eternal journey while we wait patiently to see your courageous smile once again.

Those left behind to cherish the memory of  Roy include,

Cynthia L. Nelms Byrne

Cynthia Louise Nelms Byrne (nee Laffoon) was born to surprised parents, Arthur Lee and Celia  Laffoon (they expected a boy) on March 18, 1949 in Denver, Colorado.

She did her best as a child to be as much of a tomboy as possible, and got into childish trouble with various small  pranks. She grew up in Denver, got in a little trouble here and there by wrecking the family car,  etc. and enrolled at Colorado State University as an art major. She got in some more trouble by trying to be a hippie and running away. However, Cindy gradually settled down into a first marriage, divorce, then a second more interesting marriage, divorce, and after all that, Cindy finally met her most excellent husband, Robert Byrne, when he lived in California. At the time, she in Denver as a mortgage banker, and Cindy wrote Robert a provocative letter, to which he responded almost immediately. The most memorable part of her existence was her thirty years with Bob, and he wiped out the memory of all those other husbands and beaus.

Bob and Cindy lived in Denver, the San Francisco Bay  Area, Spain, then eventually picked Dubuque, Bob’s home town, to settle in. They loved living in Dubuque  and became enmeshed in many of the arts with the Dubuque Symphony and Dubuque  Museum of Art getting most of their energies. Cynthia opened The Main Gallery in 2000, when  Bob and Cindy moved downtown to Main Street, and ran it as an unintentional non-profit for  four-plus years. She kept painting and drawing for years afterward with The Art Studio, which  included several of her longstanding artist friends. After Bob’s death in 2016, Cindy lost her  enthusiasm for painting and spent her spare time reading, watching films and taking care of her building at 198 Main Street, about which she wanted to write a book called “Landlady Blues,” but never got around to it.

Cindy leaves her cat Diabla, her Book Club From Hell, artistic and  non-artistic friends (among the dearest being Patty Wentz and Leslie Shalabi), her stepson, Russell Byrne, his wife Jackie, their children Julia (Trent) Byrne Carlson and Tyler Byrne, her most extraordinary nieces and nephews by marriage (the most precious being Linda Byrne), and their many offspring, who all have had a special place in Cindy’s heart because of all  the fun and love they gave her. She was pre-deceased by her sister, Nancy Taylor and her husband Robert Byrne.

Don’t feel sad about her death. According to the law of the conservation of energy, not a bit of her is gone; she’s just less orderly. She loved this thought by William K. Maxwell: “Because I actively enjoy sleeping, dreams, the unexplainable dialogues  that take place in my head as I am drifting off… I tell myself that lying down to an afternoon nap.”

According to her wishes, there will be no services. Friends and family are welcome to attend a celebration of Cindy’s life at 1 pm  on Sunday, January 26, 2025. The celebration will take place at Convivium Urban Farmstead, 2811 Jackson Street in Dubuque.

Contributions can be made to the Dubuque Symphony in her name, or whatever charity you desire.

Kevin Biedermann

Kevin Biedermann, age 36, left this world on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024, at Unity Point Health, Finley Hospital following a short three week illness. Kevin did not fight alone, his family was by his side every minute until he took his final breath. He left this world with the same dramatic flair that defined his extraordinary life.

To those who knew him, Kevin was a constellation of contradictions: bold and tender, fierce and fragile, mischievous and deeply kind. The world wasn’t always kind to Kevin, but he gave the world his acceptance freely, embracing others with a heart so open it felt infinite.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 3rd, 2025, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale with a funeral home service and sharing time to begin at 6:00 p.m. Burial will be at a later date at Dubuque Memorial Gardens.

Kevin was born on May 26, 1988, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Tim Biedermann and Mary Hickey. Born with a love for the theatrical, it seems only fitting that Kevin chose a day as luminous and significant as Christmas to take his final bow. He was a storyteller, a dreamer, and an unapologetic lover of life’s colorful messiness. Those who knew Kevin knew his struggles too—his demons were fierce, but so was his fight. Through it all, his beautiful soul shone through, offering light to anyone fortunate enough to stand in his orbit.

Kevin had an uncanny resemblance to his father, both in spirit and demeanor—a man who also touched countless lives before his passing in February. Together, they are surely reunited now, sparking joy and mischief in realms unseen, their love as unbreakable as ever. Like his dad, Kevin left an indelible mark on all who met him, a mark etched in laughter, understanding, and moments of genuine connection.

To his friends and family, Kevin was a beacon of warmth and authenticity. His acceptance was unconditional, his love was wholehearted, and his presence was unforgettable. In a world that often struggled to embrace him, Kevin remained steadfast in his ability to embrace the world—its people, its flaws, its beauty.

While our hearts are heavy with his loss, we celebrate the time we had with Kevin and the ways he taught us to live more boldly and love more deeply. His laughter, his wit, and his profound sense of empathy will echo in our memories forever.

Kevin, you were a light too bright to dim. Rest easy now, with Dad at your side, knowing that you are and always will be cherished.

In Kevin’s honor, let’s live with the same fearless heart he showed us, welcoming the world and its people with open arms, just as he did.

Kevin is survived by his mother Mary; his siblings Tara (Terrance) Bowman, Laura (Nathan) Miller, and Joseph (Ashley) Biedermann. His nieces and nephews: JoAnne, Zoey, and Emma Bowman, Alyvia, Aubrey and Nathan Miller, Logan and Thea Biedermann along with numerous extended family members, many friends including his Medline family and his ride or die and best friend, Stephanie Maiers, “Boo”.

He was preceded in death by his dad, Tim Biedermann on February 7th, 2024.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Kevin’s name to support a memorial fund. The fund will be used to create a memorial bench honoring Kevin and his father, to be placed near Medline at Bergfeld Pond along with memorial donation to a charitable organization. Donations may be sent through Venmo @Joe-Biedermann

When he was 16, his father began working off the farm so Gary started doing all the farming on their home place.  Gary graduated from Elwood High School in 1957 and that fall he attended the winter quarter for farm program at Ames.  In May of 1961 he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves. So the army controlled his vacations for the next 6 years. At discharged he held the rank of Staff Sargent. Gary met his future wife at a 4-H Builders Club meeting while he was County Vice President of the Boys 4-H Club. He married Marjorie Ann Fanger on June 16th, 1963 in the Ascension Lutheran Church, Goose Lake, Iowa. Together they farmed the family farm for the next 60 years raising hog, corn, and soybeans. He retired from farming in 2023 when his body would not allow him to climb into the combine or the quad track anymore.

They were the proud parents of three daughters, Angela, Carol, and Beth and 5 grandchildren. Gary was a lifelong member of St John Lutheran Church, Bliedorn, where he held several offices.  He was also a member of the Farm Bureau and Clinton County Pork Producers.

As a lad Gary built and flew model airplanes. After Gary got rid of the hogs, his winter projects were to restore old rusted out lanterns and later humpback trunks.  He liked to cut wood in the timber for his wood burning stove. He was always making or remodeling something to make his farming easier. He enjoyed spending time with his daughters and grandchildren.  But his passion was farming.

Gary is survived by his wife of 61 1/2 years. His daughters, Angela Kay Rathman (Ruby Locke) of Des Moines, Iowa, Carol Ann (Donnie) Wentworth of Preston, Iowa, and Beth Marie (Jason)Singer of Shakopee, Minnesota. 5 Grandchildren, Laura Ann Wentworth, Cole Lee (Morgan Mensen) Wentworth, Rachel Blair (Michael) Denner, Dane Alex (Joy) Singer and Evey Grace Singer. Several nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law Marilyn (Scott) Spangler.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, his sister Darlene Bartelt Berger, and brother-in law Rev. Merlin Bartelt.

Special thanks to Dr. Whalen and the Dubuque Dialysis center, Jackson County Hospice and Chris Johnson, the family’s special angel.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the St. John’s Lutheran Church at Bliedorn, Hospice of Jackson County, or the American Kidney Fund.

Kyle L. Marsden

Kyle L. Marsden, 70 of Galena IL passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford IL.  Visitation will be held Sunday, January 5, 2025, from 1 to 4 PM at Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. A parish rosary will be recited at 12:30 PM prior to the visitation, all are welcome to attend. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 6, 2025, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Galena. Friends may call after 10:30 AM at the church until the time of mass.  Cremation rites will be accorded. As per his wish, he will be buried with the love of his life, his wife, Missy after her eventual passing.

He was born October 18, 1954, in Hazel Green WI, the son of Leo J. and Donna J. (Radabaugh) Marsden. Kyle was united in marriage to Karen A. “Missy” (Randecker) Marsden, on December 1, 1979, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Galena IL.

He grew up in Warren and graduated from Warren High School, Class of 1972. Upon graduation he worked at Atwood, but factory work was not his calling.  He then became partner in a trucking business. When that ended, he worked for The Branigar Organization running heavy equipment during the building of The Galena Territory.  During his time with Branigar he and his wife bought an old farmhouse which he gutted and remodeled.  As a result of this, Kobbler Kyle Construction was created.  It was his most beloved job. It allowed him to use his artistically talented mind and helped him create his clients dreams as he remodeled their older homes throughout Jo Daviess County.

The most important things in his life were his family, his friends, “The Ranch”, owning a successful business and meeting so many clients that often times became friends.

He enjoyed competing in demolition derbies, enduro races, hunting for whatever the season allowed (archery and firearm) and simply being outdoors. The newest hobby he enjoyed was watching his grandchildren in all their sporting events.  He enjoyed taking all of them into the woods to teach them hunting, even if they had to take their blanket and white teddy bear along. They loved ranger riding, fishing, sleepovers, campfires and making smores at The Ranch.

Following their love for the outdoors and wildlife he and his brother-in-law, Bill were approached in 1997 to start up the Jo Daviess County Longbeards, a Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation of which he was still an avid member.  He hosted the JAKES Day event for many years at “The Ranch” and took pride in allowing others to enjoy the outdoors at his beloved property.

He is survived by his wife, Karen “Missy”, his daughter Amanda (Nolan) Mullen (children, Beau J. Podnar and Mila K. and Nova M. Mullen) of Apple River IL, granddaughter Jessica J. Thommen (Casey Welch) of Maquoketa IA. Sisters, Jan (Ed) Bussan of Gratiot WI and Kelly (Paul) Jones of Apple River IL. In-laws Richard (Laurie) Randecker of East Dubuque IL, Randy (Lynn) Randecker, William (Carla) Randecker of Galena, Sharon (Tim) Streight of Hanover IL, Michelle Randecker (Randy Weber) of East Dubuque IL. Aunts, Janice Radabaugh of Galena IL and Fay Zeal of Maple Park IL. Many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his sons, Jaime C. and Jacob K. Marsden, his parents Leo J. and Donna J. Marsden, brother, Kevin J. Marsden. His in-laws, William L. and Mary Kathryn (Nolan) Randecker and sister-in-law Mary Beth Kiely.

In lieu of flowers a Kyle L. Marsden memorial fund will be established for construction trades and wildlife enthusiasts.
