James O. Berry
James Osie Berry, 84, of Hanover, IL, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025. A funeral service will be held at Noon on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Grace Episcopal Church in Galena, IL, where friends may gather after 11 AM until the start of the service. The burial will be in the church columbarium. The Furlong Funeral Chapel in Galena is assisting the family.
He was born on December 15, 1940, in Fort Wayne, IN, the son of Paul and Kathryn (Kirn) Berry. Jim grew up in Barrington, IL, and graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1959 and Northwestern University in 1963. Jim began his professional career with Procter & Gamble in Chicago before joining the Chicago Board of Trade in 1966, where he founded Berry Trading Corp.
In 1967, he married the love of his life, Ann Schmid, and together they shared 58 years of marriage, raising three children—Robert (Lara) Berry, Christine (Joe) Lillie, and Elizabeth Berry. Jim was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Andrew Lillie, Kate Lillie, Vija Berry, Matt Berry, Mike Lillie, Charlie Berry, and Paul Berry. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Loupee and Susan Skarecky.
From 1970 to 1999, Jim and Ann raised their family in Crystal Lake, IL. A lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, Jim was an innovator long before “side hustle” became a trend—owning and operating a Radio Shack in Crystal Lake, becoming Illinois’s first licensed hot air balloon pilot, and raising buffalo before switching to cattle.
In the late 1970s, Jim began building a cattle operation with just 16 heads. Jim started Wildberry Farms, a vision that grew into a nationally respected Simmental breeding program. After retiring from the Board of Trade in 1997, he moved Wildberry Farm to Hanover and Scales Mound, IL. His annual March sale attracted buyers from across the country, and he became a leading figure in the industry, earning numerous honors, including Breeder of the Year, Seed Stock Producer, and Environmental Awards. Jim cared deeply for the land, knowing that its stewardship was key to his success, and was grateful for the loyal employees who shared his dedication.
Jim’s devotion extended beyond his work—he was committed to giving back to his community, always leading with humility, generosity, and quiet strength. He never complained, worked tirelessly, and was guided by a heart of gold.
His family, friends, and everyone who knew him will deeply miss him. Instead of flowers, donations may be made to Episcopal Relief & Development, www.episcopalrelief.org

Scott was born in 1964 at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, to Spencer and Susan (Hansen) Hendron. His father’s time in the Air Force brought a series of moves across the United States and across seas to West Berlin, Germany, before ultimately settling in Park Ridge, Illinois, where Scott spent his formative years.
Growing up, Scott was highly intelligent, competitive, and determined in all aspects. He was very industrious and began working on his own initiative delivering papers in the dark, early morning hours before school. He was an enthusiastic and aggressive football player, made the traveling team, and was eventually awarded the highest honor of his hometown league. He also participated in area youth wrestling competitions.
Scott was born with the engineering gene thanks to his maternal grandfather, Svend Hansen, a Danish engineer himself. Scott spent many hours with his grandfather in the workshop which was rocket fuel for his engineering ambitions. Scott excelled in math and physical sciences in high school. During his senior year, he worked as a draftsman at a small local engineering firm, and he graduated from Maine South High School in 1982.
Scott was accepted into the prestigious University of Illinois School of Engineering and graduated with honors in mechanical engineering. In 1986, he was hired by Komatsu Dresser Industries where he worked for several years. During that time he also began raising a family with his then-wife, Mary, and together they had three children: Matthew, Jack, and Caroline.
Moving on to advance his interests, he was given a position at John Deere in Dubuque, Iowa. At Deere, he was highly regarded and assigned cutting edge projects domestically and internationally while working in advanced research and design. He also established over 30 patents for John Deere.
Scott was an avid and voracious fisherman fueled by family vacations on fishing lakes in the northwoods of Wisconsin. He always kept his love for the outdoors and instilled it into his sons Matthew and Jack on camping and fishing trips. He also became an inveterate tinkerer and creator. He worked on many projects including woodworking, furniture making, model building, electronic, 3-D printing, and building skateboard ramps for his kids. Scott was always tirelessly creating and perfecting his newest inventions.
Scott retired from a successful career at John Deere in 2018. Scott’s partner, Patti Fedewa, cared for him until he passed away with her at his home.
There is so much more to describe his life and endless creativity, ingenuity, enthusiasm, and sense of humor. He leaves a huge void and is beyond sorely missed by his family.
